Re: Politics

Trump's disastrous French trip started with a tweet and ended with more mistrust between America and the world

Why should we care? Trump may extoll the benefits of nationalism, but America desperately needs loyal, determined partners right now.

Ever since america's birth we have count on alliances to stay strong...

Trumps statement of Nationalism is a political, social, and economic system characterized by the promotion of the interests of a particular nation, especially with the aim of gaining and maintaining sovereignty over the homeland, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations.

Patriotism or national pride is the ideology of love and devotion to a homeland, and a sense of alliance with other citizens who share the same values, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects. It encompasses a set of concepts closely related to those of nationalism.

Re: Politics

Racism is still rearing its ugly head Chipotle refused to serve 5 black men. With One of them which has had a history of not paying for food alleged and of course a side of cover the butt....

A Chipotle manager was fired this week after a video posted on Twitter showed employees refusing to serve five black men and asking them to prove they had the money to pay for their meals before placing their orders.

The footage, which has been re-tweeted more than 52,000 times, showed the Chipotle employees moving on to serve a white woman without asking her to show “proof of income.” When the camera zoomed in on her, an employee said the food would be on the house because of the incident surrounding her.

Of course a little bit of tact would have gone a long ways with a call for confirmation as to whom had really done the act.

“This is not how we treat our customers. We’re committed to treating everyone equally and with respect,” Chipotle said in a statement referring to the black customers. “The manager has been terminated and we are re-training everyone at the restaurant to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again.”

According to the company, the manager thought the men were the same customers who had previously ordered and couldn’t pay for their meals.

Silently back in April of this year the House decided to go after your entitlement called Social Security something that you have worked and paid into for you to be able to collect from when you reach retirement age....Legislation That Would Surreptitiously Steal Social Security’s $2.9 Trillion Surplus Has Been Defeated – But 97% of Republicans Voted For It The amendment failed to attain the two-thirds majority required to pass it into law: with 233 nearly every Republican member of the House of Representatives, as well as seven Democrats, voting for a Constitutional amendment requiring that all annual revenue and spending balance every year. Even if half true that is still not right...

One of whom is noted for dining and dashing. He even brags about it on Twitter.

It's disgusting what Chipotle have done. They need to compensate that poor woman.

Well you can not get you food served to you if you have not paid for it when you order at a fast food location and for a restaurant come back to them often to request payment before they finish...of course there was mistaken identification and the cops could have been called while they ate to make sure that they did not get away with a dash and dine.

I think the restaurant manager over reacted and needed to error on the side on the customer first and second for the business.

Re: Politics

The game of striking out is to begin with House Republicans subpoena Comey, Lynch for closed-door testimony

House Judiciary Chairman Robert Goodlatte has notified colleagues that he will subpoena Comey for a closed-door deposition Nov. 29 and Lynch for Dec. 5, according to a person familiar with the subpoenas.

Representatives for Comey and Lynch did not immediately respond to queries about whether they would appear for the closed-door interviews, though both have expressed a willingness to speak to the panel. Comey stated earlier this year that while he is ready to be interviewed, he would agree only to a public session.

Comey and Lynch have spoken to other congressional panels investigating possible connections between the Trump campaign and Russia. But they have yet to be interviewed as part of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees' joint probe, which Democrats have decried as a blatant attempt to undermine confidence in the federal law enforcement agencies - and by extension, the basis of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation.

"These subpoenas are coming out of the blue, with very little time left on the calendar, and after the American people have resoundingly rejected the GOP's approach to oversight - if, indeed, 'oversight' is the word we should use for running interference for President Trump."

Re: Politics

SpaceNut,

You posted a link that says a bunch of Republicans voted to "steal" Social Security money, but then you posted a link right below it which says the claim in the infographic is false.  What's the point?

Do you realize that if our creditors start demanding what they're owed because their confidence in our ability to pay our debts is eroded, that the government itself and all it's "Not-So-Great Society" machinations (basically, all forms of welfare spending from food stamps to health care to social security) goes with it?

Re: Politics

Fact checked after posting...

Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke will leave his administration post at the end of the year.

After many false starts to find a replacement for General John Kelly, it seems that Mick Mulvaney, director of the Office of Management and Budget as acting White House chief of staff.

Mr. Kyl, appointed after the death of John McCain, will depart on Dec. 31. Gov. Doug Ducey and Republicans in Washington may differ over who should be named to replace him.

Re: Politics

Well we got a Trump shutdown over the WALL..

The House and Senate failed to come to agreement on President Trump's $5 billion border wall, and Mr. Trump declared last week he'd be "proud" to shut down the government to get it.

Democrats in Congress don't want to spend more than $1.6 billion on border security. This is approximate the same amount given before that has gone unspent. The Senate initially passed a bill without the wall funding. But Republicans in the House caved into Trumps demands and passed a stopgap bill Thursday night that inserted $5 billion for the wall, a move that means the Senate will have to vote again on the measure knowing from a week ago that the senate did not have the votes along party lines to pass it.

Government employees who are considered "essential," such as Secret Service agents, Customs and Border Patrol agents and U.S. troops deployed at the border, will still be working. They will eventually get paid for the days they worked during the shutdown, but they won't be paid until after it ends.

Funding that expired at midnight Saturday covers the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department, the State Department, the Interior Department, the Departure of Agriculture and the Department of Housing and Urban Development, among some other federal entities.

Federal agencies must halt all "non-essential" discretionary work and so-called non-essential employees must stay home until new funding legislation is signed into law. The disruption affects many government operations and the routines of 800,000 federal employees. Roughly 420,000 workers were deemed essential and will work unpaid just days before Christmas. An additional 380,000 will be furloughed, meaning they will stay home without pay.

Those being furloughed include nearly everyone at NASA and 52,000 workers at the Internal Revenue Service. About 8 in 10 employees of the National Park Service were to stay home; many parks were expected to close.

Unspent money for the wall which could have already been in use means there is no need to do this. There is also no planned build or replacement in the wind requiring more money...

The house passed 2 bills in a bipartisonship passed clean continuing resolution that would go until Feb 2019, while only the GOP passed an ammended add on of one for just the 5 billion only after Trump turned his back on owning the shutdown, threatening to not sign anything if it did not have the border wall money amount. The GOP does not have the votes even if they were in a nuclear option for getting it passed as even they do not want that much being spent. The deals all start over at the beginning of the year as the players will change.

Trump does not even understand the concept of a budget as he thinks he can use the money for anything that he wants including any that is unused for what ever he wants.

Sure but you seem to have forgotten 911 or 9/11 as some would say as there was a whole ocean between us and that group that carried the mission out. So do you really think that they are going to go away anytime soon. Also abandoning the Kurd's that are fighting this group of ISSI is setting the US up again for that group doing the same for turn our backs on them.

Trump should have been brokering a land area for their nation to be born in much like Isreal was. Making a treaty with Turkey, Syria, Iraq and any others for a small territory to allow them to call it home.

Re: Politics

It’s official. As of the stroke of midnight Saturday, The shutdown affects spending for nine departments, hundreds of thousands of federal employees are being furloughed during the government shutdown, but for many, it will mean working without pay. According to data from the Senate Appropriations Committee, more than 420,000 will be punching the clock while their salaries are suspended. Roughly 53,000 of them belong to the Transportation Security Administration, which is responsible for ensuring safety at transit hubs as part of the Homeland Security department.

"A government shutdown is bad for the country and especially for the border patrol officers and TSA agents who will be forced to work without pay over the holidays."

The government impasse comes down to securing funding for a wall along the southern border of the U.S. Meanwhile, customs and Border Patrol agents guarding the Ambassador Bridge will continue working over the holiday without pay.

Re: Politics

SpaceNut,

If there are any two groups of people who deserved to be imported into America ahead of all the illegal immigrants, it was the Jews following following the brutality of the Nazis in WWII and the Kurds following the brutality of the Iraqi dictator Saddam.  I would bring them all here.  It's much cheaper than continuing to kill people in their name.  We could have bought them all nice houses somewhere in the midwest and few of them would ever be subjected to the type of violence they've been subjected to in the war zone we call the Middle East.

Ironically, our government was shut down in an attempt to seek more funding to make the job of the US Border Patrol easier.  We have people in our country who obviously benefit in some way from illegal immigration who want to keep the status quo because they have a vested interest in continued criminality.  President Trump is forcing the issue.

Re: Politics

There is a "border crisis" ONLY IF (1) you conflate guest workers,  refugees,  and the border smugglers all together,  and (2) you only listen to the likes of Faux-and-Friends or "conservative" (spelled "extremist") talk radio.  Those are 3 problems (guest workers,  refugees,  and border smugglers) that you solve separately,  each with their own solutions.

The presence of 10-12 million illegal aliens in this country is precisely the result of 7 decades deliberate neglect of the guest worker permit problem:  far less than 1/10th as many legal permits as people who need them.  The workforce is there,  the jobs are here,  the need for the work is life-critical,  so they will come,  legal or not.  The neglect is because if illegal,  you can put these workers into economic slavery,  for more profit.   Why is any of that surprising to anyone with two working brain cells to rub together?

There are more refugees today than in previous years precisely because there are more failed states now,  in Central America.  The immigration court backlog is criminally-big and growing worse,  solely from neglect to fund this function adequately.  The turn-away rate exceeds 90% because (1) the backlog,  and (2) the laws are rigged against these people.  (Two working brain cells to rub together again!)

Fixing these two problems requires staffing-up to handle the paperwork load and (unlike now) to effectively track the people with visas and work permits.  That simply costs a whole lot less than any idiotic $5-$25B wall!  We have known for 5 millennia that fixed fortifications (including walls) are ineffective.  The last time we learned that lesson was the Maginot Line.  The first (known) time was the Great Wall of China.  (Two brain cells!)

Now,  fixing those two problems "right" is more effective and less expensive than building that idiotic wall.  Plus,  with those two fixed,  our current border patrol resources can be turned loose entirely on the border smugglers.  Makes them far more effective,  too,  without any more cost added.  (Two cells!)

Trump is responding to right wing extremist demands to keep Hispanics out,  and not very smartly or cost-effectively,  because he personally knows demonstrably-nothing of such smart or cost-effective things (6 bankruptcies-of-record).  This is fundamentally a racist emotional thing,  just like with the Nazis in Germany 7-8 decades ago.  Have any of you ever seen a loud border wall advocate who was not white?  No?  There you go.  (Two cells,  yet again.)

This evil nonsense has gone on too long,  and has needlessly divided us with a false argument,  for nothing but the political gain of some.  Evil!  It is way past time to put an end to this.  Fix the two problems,  which fixes the third,  and quit emulating the German Nazis over this. Not only will it work,  you'll save money.  And lives.
