In total, the company has found 3,814 Internet Research Agency-linked accounts, which posted 175,993 tweets during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Twitter said it also found 13,512 new Kremlin-linked bot accounts, bringing the total number of bots it has found in connection to Russia's election influence efforts to 50,258.
The company also said in a post on Friday that it will notify 677,775 people to let them know that they either liked, retweeted or followed Russian-linked accounts,
Russian hackers move to new political targets
Moscow-linked hackers have expanded to new political targets, including the U.S. Senate, in the wake of the hacking and disinformation campaign during the 2016 presidential race.
The hackers, said to have links to Russia’s GRU military intelligence unit, are part of the same group that was implicated in the 2016 hacks of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
The cybersecurity firm Trend Micro revealed last week that the cyber espionage group known as APT 28, “Fancy Bear” or “Pawn Storm” had begun targeting the Senate in June, orchestrating a phishing campaign using fake websites to steal official credentials for the Senate’s email system.

With the continued Russian attacks the state of democracy is in doubt. Russian activity is undiminished and is not going to change or stop. Just as it did in the 2016 presidential election, Russia is determined to meddle in 2018.
Intel chiefs warn Congress Russia intent on interfering with 2018 midterms
“Russia perceives its past efforts as successful and views the 2018 U.S. midterm elections as a potential target for Russian influence operations,” Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Coats was joined by the heads of the CIA, FBI, Defense Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency.
None of the other agency heads could say that the president had directed them to counter Russian meddling, and while senators probed for a detailed plan on how to counter Russian active measures, the witnesses made clear that there is no comprehensive plan in place or being developed.

Forgive me for going slightly off topic, but I had an incident with my computer a couple of days ago.
I was browsing a perfectly legitimate looking site, and all the sudden a warning came up warning my that my computer was being hacked, and that I should not shut off the computer, and I should call up a 800-xxx-xxxx phone number and get help from Microsoft. It also said that my personal financial information was at risk.
I elected to cut my internet connection and closed the windows. I also went to task manager and saw about 8 strange tasks. I closed them all. Then I went to the local Best Buy and asked the Geek Squad about it.
They said it was a Phishing scam.
So, if it happens to you, you are warned.
They would have probably tried to have me let them into my computer, and also would have requested personal information.

A small start is all it takes to weaken even the best of defenses as Cyberattacks Put Russian Fingers on the Switch at Power Plants, U.S. Says
The Trump administration accused Russia on Thursday of engineering a series of cyberattacks that targeted American and European nuclear power plants and water and electric systems, and could have sabotaged or shut power plants off at will.
United States officials and private security firms saw the attacks as a signal by Moscow that it could sabotage the West’s critical facilities in the event of a conflict.
They said the strikes accelerated in late 2015, at the same time the Russian interference in the American election was underway. The attackers successfully compromised North American and European energy operators by spring 2017, after President Trump was inaugurated.

We have been talking about servers and what is or is not classified and how it can be defeated by those that have access to the information which is on a need to know bases and not able to be seen by all at any level of government or military personel. As the title of the topic tries to point out being hacked seems to ne a non issue but what if its up the classified levels.
Oh, now I have your attention....about how serious this can be....
China hacked a Navy contractor and secured a trove of highly sensitive data on submarine warfare including secret plans to develop a supersonic anti-ship missile for use on U.S. submarines by 2020, according to American officials.
Taken were 614 gigabytes of material relating to a closely held project known as Sea Dragon, as well as signals and sensor data, submarine radio room information relating to cryptographic systems, and the Navy submarine development unit’s electronic warfare library.
The Washington Post agreed to withhold certain details about the compromised missile project at the request of the Navy, which argued that their release could harm national security.
The data stolen was of a highly sensitive nature despite being housed on the contractor’s unclassified network. The officials said the material, when aggregated, could be considered classified, a fact that raises concerns about the Navy’s ability to oversee contractors tasked with developing cutting-edge weapons.
So improper network server clasification....as it was a privately owned and operated piece of equipment.
Over the years, the Chinese have snatched designs for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter; the advanced Patriot PAC-3 missile system; the Army system for shooting down ballistic missiles known as Terminal High Altitude Area Defense; and the Navy’s new Littoral Combat Ship, a small surface vessel designed for near-shore operations, according to previous reports prepared for the Pentagon.
Let the cloning begin.....
Chinese hackers reportedly steal sensitive submarine missile data from US Navy contractor. The breaches are alleged to have occurred in January and February
"Per federal regulations, there are measures in place that require companies to notify the government when a 'cyber incident' has occurred that has actual or potential adverse effects on their networks that contain controlled unclassified information. Navy submarine development unit’s electronic warfare library was also compromised. Hundreds of systems - mechanical and software - have been put at risk as a result of the hacking.
China hacked Navy contractor, secured trove of sensitive data on submarine warfare
"The United States consistently has been able to use highly compartmented security systems to protect its most innovative and dynamic defense advancements, and any time one of those is penetrated you give up an enormous advantage in surprise,"
Advance weaponry now will be obsolete amost even before its in use...which is not a good thing when other nations are building up their naval strength...

If someone doesn't go to jail over that, I'll be upset. I just can't figure out how or why it is that our government can't figure out how important military technology security is. This stuff cost billions to develop. It's crazy.

Agreed kbd512 that some one should pay if only it was so easy to say whom would be at fault.
First the down grade of security was a huge mistake. Finding out how it was that accessed is the next bit of information that is required to solve to the how it happened.
Was it IT updates that led to the hack as security updates were not done or was it via spuffing malware or other means that gave them access to the data.
How would they even know where to look, let alone the server to access?

How are we doing with hacking Homeland Security with protecting the power grid, facilities that make power or how about a nuclear power plant.
Russian hackers reportedly accessed US electric utilities' control rooms
The hackers — working for a state-sponsored group previously identified as Dragonfly or Energetic Bear — broke into utilities' isolated networks by hacking networks belonging to third-party vendors that had relationships with the power companies, the Department of Homeland Security said in a press briefing on Monday.
Hackers compromised US power utility companies' corporate networks with conventional approaches, such as spear-phishing emails and watering-hole attacks, which target a specific group of users by infecting websites they're known to visit, the newspaper reported. After gaining access to vendor networks, hackers turned their attention to stealing credentials for access to the utility networks and familiarizing themselves with facility operations, officials said, according to the Journal.

Well here is the political people hacking of the vote as they were not counted....
Ohio Finds Nearly 600 Uncounted Votes In Too-Close-To-Call Special Election with the 1,722 provisional ballots still needing to be verified as not double or illegal votes and then there is the 1,750 absentee ballots which must have a post mark on them to be allow for counting...

News sources are say 8000 still to be counted...
Same sort of story in Kansas Thousands of votes cast but still uncounted could change result of Kobach-Colyer race
Election officials will also be hand-counting paper ballots that were damaged and couldn’t be fed into tabulating equipment. Then there are the many provisional ballots cast in person by people whose names were for whatever reason not on the voter rolls when they arrived at the polling place. Or perhaps they had earlier requested a mail-in ballot, but decided at the last minute to vote in person instead.
Officials have to make sure they didn’t vote twice

DNC filed a motion with a federal court in Manhattan requesting permission to serve its complaint to WikiLeaks on Twitter, a platform the DNC argued the website uses regularly. The DNC filed a lawsuit in April against the Trump campaign, Russian government and WikiLeaks, alleging a massive conspiracy to tilt the 2016 election in Donald Trump's favor.

Counting all the cast ballots made when we vote seems to be a huge problem as Kobach steps away from duties in contested Kansas vote count
Updated totals with late mail-in ballots from all 105 counties counted left Kobach's lead over Colyer at 110 votes out of more than 313,000 cast, less than the 191 votes recorded the morning after Tuesday's election. Under state law, mail-in ballots are counted if they were postmarked Tuesday and arrive in county election offices by Friday.
Schmidt already is anticipating the possibility of a lawsuit challenging the election results by Colyer or Kobach and sent a letter to county election officials, reminding them to preserve "any paper files, notes, or electronic data related in any way" to the election.

Other states are also looking at those that should have protected the voters rights. A grand jury will investigate whether Kris Kobach intentionally botched voter registration in 2016
The probe is into whether Kobach and others in his office engaged in “destroying, obstructing, or failing to deliver online voter registration.

Primary season cyberattacks illuminate campaign vulnerabilities
The spotlight on cyber vulnerabilities of political campaigns has grown brighter after three Democratic campaigns in California were hacked during the state’s primary elections.
The campaigns of Bryan Caforio, Hans Keirstead and David Min all fell victim to cyber intrusions this year, underscoring a shortcoming that applies to political operations of various sizes: insufficient protections to guard against cyberattacks.
Authorities have not named any persons of interest in the digital intrusions. The FBI declined to comment, saying it “does not confirm or deny the existence of investigations.”

Facebook just had its worst hack ever — and it could get worse
September 16, engineers at Facebook detected some unusual activity on the social media platform's networks. It was an attack, the biggest security breach in Facebook's history. And it would take the company 11 more days to stop it. What we do know is that for at least 50 million users, the hackers could have seen everything.
The hackers could be trolls who decide to post a database of millions of people's private messages online for everyone to read. They could be Russian intelligence, gathering information from politicians' personal accounts and then sitting on it until just the right moment to wreak havoc on the midterm or 2020 elections. They could be blackmailers, combing through the messages of high-value targets like politicians, government officials, and wealthy individuals.
Not good since many use this as a means to connect family....

Bellter,
Despite the hysteria that's been spread by certain groups and individuals, the US election was not actually hacked. What seems to have happened is that foreign governments decided to do some campaigning of their own. Which isn't at all unusual - America does it all the time, and did so in 2016 during our referendum regarding the EU.
Use what is abundant and build to last
