Naming the first city on Mars

I've raised this before, but I think it's worth recirculating now we are much, much closer to the foundation of that city...it could be as early as 2022 - just four year away that the first (robotic) BFR lands to begin the process of founding a whole city. If there's a good water source close by then the likelihood is that wherever it lands will become the first city on Mars, unlikely to be eclipsed for many years if ever.

So what do you think it should be called?

I have always favoured Sagan City to be named after Carl Sagan the first human to articulate clearly the vision  of a terraformed Mars to become a second home for humanity.

Musk City would be fair enough in the circumstances. Other thoughts:

Neorbo?
Humanity?
Peace City?

Or maybe name it after the features of the exact location, if you feel we need to get away from human ego.

Freedom comes to mind as any city would want to be able to govern itself.

Bradbury or Burroughs would be good names, I think.

A sci-fi angle?  I'd favour that for some later settlements...not sure about for the first and main settlement.

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

We could name it after one of Ares' many children. Like most Greek deities, he was very fecund.

Burroughs seems like a particularly good name as the settlement is likely to be substantially underground

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

Ares's children were Eros, Anteros, Phobos, Deimos, Harmonia, Himerus and Adrestia.

Phobos and Deimos have kind of been bagged.

Harmonia would be nice.

Harmony City. Would that make Discordianism a banned religion? Are apples allowed?

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

Personally I never like mention of Martian...I prefer Aresian for human settlement and think that's what the human population on Mars should be referred to as...Marsopolis has a nice ring to it.

I've said it before and nothing has changed since. I think it is going to be called New Beijing.

Only after China officially withdraws from the Outer Space Treaty.

Trump will wreck that treaty. They won't have to withdraw.

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

You don't wait till your rocket is on the way to Mars before you name it so I don't see why you wouldn't name your first settlement before you get there.

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

"Angels on the Head of a Pin" seems like a top contender for the name of the first colony on Mars.  I'm also fond of "Yeah, Ain't That Something".

Re: Naming the first city on Mars

All we need is the rover to trace out the shape so its features can been seen in order for the naming process to label it for the features that can be viewed.
