Won't Mars soon be one of the most fantastic areas of research for geologists, space scientists, seismologists, climate scientists and evolutionary biologists??
Not to say, anthropologists, sociologists, economists and futurologists!
So how long after a landing do you think it will be before a University from Earth formally establishes a research facility on Mars? I would say 4 years max. And how long before some sort of postgrad teaching faculty is established there? I would say 10 years max.
How long before a fully functioning university satellite campus including undergraduates is established? Maybe 25 years I would say.

That will happen shortly after the first samples are back and we have more questions than answers and those that are paying for the missions are saying no more free samples....

Fair point...but, of course, there are practical arguments for saying you will have to go to Mars if you want to really know Mars and if you go, the likelihood is you will be there for two years, rather than a short summer season as in Antarctica. Given that length of time, I think the case for a post grad teaching facility as well as a research outpost becomes compelling.

I think it's helpful to think through a lot of these issues...Space X has great rocketry but there is so far precious little evidence they have really thought through all the social, pyschological, economic, and governance stuff. They might have done, and are just keeping it secret so far, but in terms of public stuff, zilch really apart from Musk's vague plans to sell tens of thousands of tickets to "come all ye" settlers.
