Your link (above) to the discoveries about Jupiter's moon Amalthea put me in mind of a controversy that emerged about Phobos back in 1959.
When Phobos's density was found to be a shade under 2 grams per cubic centimetre (the density of water is 1 gram per cc), a Russian astrophysicist called Shklovsky announced that it must be hollow and therefore an artificial satellite. He declared this proved that a Martian civilisation had existed a long time ago and that they must have launched this massive space station into orbit!

It seems odd to us now, in the light of our knowledge that celestial bodies can be made of loose rubble and/or mixtures of ice and rock, that a prominent astrophysicist could have jumped to such a conclusion.
Presumably, if Shklovsky had been able to determine the density of Amalthea back in the 50s, he would have concluded that it too was a hollow body - another artificial satellite launched, this time, by Jovian scientists!!

I once read a book - the name of the author escapes me - called "Our Spaceship Moon" (I think), which propounded that our own Moon was an enormous, ancient, badly battered 'world-ship' sent from another star system to facilitate colonisation of this one!
Some of the chief arguments put forward were:-
1) The three main explanations for the Moon's existence are
all fatally flawed and therefore inadequate.
2) Strange transient lights and apparent episodes of
outgassing on the Moon have been reported for centuries
by astronomers.
3) When a used Saturn V third-stage (Apollo 14, I think) was
deliberately crashed onto the Moon, Apollo 12's
seismometer recorded reverberations which lasted for 2
hours! The Moon 'rang like a bell' - obviously a vast metal
sphere of artificial origin!!

I wonder if I can top that fantastic theory:

I read in an article, a few years ago, a man suggesting one of Saturn's moons (I forget which; I'll see if I can dig that article out of my file box in the closet, if you're interested in the finer details) is likely a spaceship "in hybernation," perhaps awaiting a "cosmic trigger" (ala the Tycho Monolith in _2001: A Space Odyssey_) from an intelligent source in order to "revive it." Considering we've had space vehicles go past Saturn by now, I wonder what that "comic trigger" could be which the author speculated about. The author states this moon of Saturn's is smoother and more spherical than most others (according to scientific data at the time of his writing), and the fact that it orbits Saturn in the direction opposite to all its other satellites (according to scientific data at the time of his writing) led him to this fabulous theory. His name is Robert Temple, and the book is entitled _The Sirius Mystery_. He puts forth the theory, based on ancient Sumerian and Egyptian texts (I believe I'm recalling this correctly) that beings from the Sirian system called "Annunaki" came to Earth thousands of years ago and it is one of their ships which is "posing" as a moon of Saturn...to return to Earth again some day.

Ah well. [For newcomers to New Mars: It's just an article I read, which I'm SUPER skeptical of...to say the very least].
