Newmars Mobile

Hi All,

To those who have programming knowledge, I'm wondering how hard it would be to make newmars more mobile-friendly. A huge chunk of web traffic these days comes from smartphones, so it seems like we would be able to get more users and more posts if we has a mobile site. As of right now the forums are a bit clunky and difficult to read from my phone.

Re: Newmars Mobile

Good to see you back JoshNH4H and yes I would agree that the website could use a little new coding to make it more mobile device friendly as I have used a 7" tablet on ocasion and its not all that fun to maneuver the screens to be able to read and change pages.

Re: Newmars Mobile

Good to see you too.  I don't think I'll be posting as actively as I used to but I will try to hang around and comment here and there.  Do you think it's worth emailing jburk about this?

Re: Newmars Mobile

Hi Josh,

As I mentioned in our email thread -- Yes, this is a good idea to make the forums better usable on Mobile.  I will do some research on what is available for FluxBB themes and report back.

Re: Newmars Mobile

It looks like there is an unsupported skin called “Victory” that is responsive and allegedly works on the latest builds of FluxBB. I will install it and test it out this weekend.

Re: Newmars Mobile

I have uploaded the Victory theme, which seems to work great on Mobile.  Here's how to use it:

1. Click "Profile" in the toolbar.
2. Click "Display" on the left navigation.
3. Using the "Styles" dropdown, select "Victory" and hit Submit button.

Enjoy!

Let me know if you run into any issues.

Re: Newmars Mobile

Hey jburk,

Love the new theme. Works perfectly on my computer and my phone. Is it possible to make it the default?

Edit: I notice that the "New Mars Forums" image at the top does not link to the home page like it does in other skins.

Re: Newmars Mobile

Nice: now posting using an old laptop as desktop computer was still not working the way that it should as the display was going blank when it was actively displaying content....

Re: Newmars Mobile

Let me do some work on it, to fix the header and make the color scheme red and such. But yeah making it the default is prob a good idea.

What are you using? I'm running Windows XP with the latest version of Firefox. Works great. Firefox had disabled H.264 video format, but I applied settings to re-enabled it. I find New Mars works fine with "Air" display style. Also appears to work fine with the new "Victory" style.

Re: Newmars Mobile

Between 2 boxes and some thinking was able to getback to life as I was having some memry issues and a monitor problem and some corrupt software to boot so thinks RobertDyck as the problm did come through the firsfox most likely as I was connecting a college windows 10 server with the machine and then it all went south from there.....

As for the new skin will try it on the tablet at some point so thanks Jburk....for that quick response and I hope the work will get out that Newmars is now mobile.....

Re: Newmars Mobile

I have the chance to use my wife's cell  phone over the days that we did not have power for my computer and it is a different experience to go onto the site just to read the comments on the recent topics for the day.

To view a page that loads in html you would wait until it finishes and select the mobile page view pops up. To which the view sort drops the whom made the comment and reads sort of more like a white page.

I would think that this looks different once you login to which I did not try but will at some point.

Re: Newmars Mobile

I'm unable to reply to posts when I'm on my phone because whenever I click on the textbox it expands to cover up the "Submit" button.

Re: Newmars Mobile

I love the "Victory" style for mobile. Since November, I have a smart phone, it works great. But I'm constantly changing: Victory for mobile, "Air" for desktop. It was the original display style. Isn't there some way to detect, to allow users to select one style for desktop, another for mobile. Even if the only mobile choice is Victory.
