Does FMARS or MDRS currently use any SCADA / Data Acquisition hardware and software?
If not, why?
Would it be beneficial to have a system that monitors and/or controls some aspects of the station i.e temperature, humiditiy etc?

(there's obviously more, let's just keep the numbers down)
Soon as a Remote Rover GPR/Magnetometer is put into action, THEN, we'll see some action.

The Mars Society would learn a terrible lesson if they did not show interest.
That's why this forum is here........ we can make these things happen !
SCADA, ModBus, SPI, Serial, PLC and just about any method of measure could be used.
Of course, I said: "NEEDED NOW"
Because NOW is a good time for MS to "get busy" and implement "new technology requests"
of their future Mission Crews'.
Whatever previous Teams have used in the past, little was spoken of.
Many reports do not speak of the devices introduced and explained in detail.

I would love to work on something for the research station, but I need to know what is the most requested / needed thing on the station. Of course, my time/resources are somehow limited so it would probably make sense to start with something small.
Do you know who is the best person to contact regarding this?

MDRS Engineers' are difficult to contact.
None have replied to my questions.
That is sad.
This subject would make an excellent "Call for Papers" at their next Convention.

When we speak of SCADA and DAQ, that includes TELEMETRY.
In our Case for Mars, "wireless is absolute and essential".
A back up plan uses a Suit-to-Suit wire link or Suit-to-Capsule connect.
(ALWAYS have a back up plan)
Voice Activated communications is needed while BOTH HANDS are busy with tasks at hand.
I've addressed these "issues" with Dr. Zubrin because our Staff has not responded, nor
would entertain the use of efficient communications...
Much less, communicating to all the other analog stations on our own planet.
At the time of this writing (June 2017), it is plainly seen, that we have a load of choices and opportunities
for equipping & using state-of-the-art wi-fi devices THAT ARE DEPENDABLE AND TIME PROVEN.
For remote operation, the PixHawk Autonomy gives you the best package for a frugal price.

This unit has been used on Sea-Land-Air and quite possibly near-space.
Since I do not know "the current people" who are responsible for the EVA Suits and
MDRS Operations ( IE: "engineers'), it is a request for them to consider upgrades to Suit Comms, Bio Telemetry,
and Rover / Autonomy Control features, while out in the fields.

Please contact Shannon Rupert (srupert@marssociety.org) and mention you are an interested volunteer and what you are interested in working on. That also goes for anybody else reading this. We always need volunteers and we have open Work Parties at MDRS for the week before & after the field season. Email her but you can pretty much just show up at the hab then and help out however you can.

I was at the MDRS recently, and was the Crew Engineer for 188. The condition of MDRS is quite rustic, and would benefit greatly from the infrastructure you are discussing. I put together a report while I was there that you can view HERE.
Unfortunately, I got no response from the MDRS Director or Mission Support. It doesn't seem that there is anyone there who is looking into these sorts of initiatives, despite having many people who would like to volunteer their efforts. I'm hoping that something will give, and the MDRS and FMARS can be updated to include automated systems and telemetry for future missions.

That is to bad that the efforts are falling on deaf ears. So put them into these pages to help create discussion of what changes would effect an outcome of a mars mission. We can look at the aspects of fund generation for the upgrades, the tier 1 no cost items that people can do and go from there with the funds that come in.
Now to read the report....

You have found key elements of life support, communications, mission vehicle (gas powered and not electrical) and due to the electical supply difference a valid concern of power consumption not be identified for a real mars mission. Then the water supply does not give a good metric for how quickly we can resupply the tanks for the next days use.
