Re: NEW MARS RULES

Something else to keep in mind for the older machine that still runs just fine is the websites that you visit while it may view ok in firefox or IE8 that when they design there sites with IE9 or higher that the lower version will show a img place holder box, this happens even if the link is from firefox 48.0.2 as the IE can not direct its image functions correctly even when we view the newmars site with IE8.

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Hi all,

Today we banned two long-time contributors due to their lack of decorum and flagrant violation of these forum rules.  Please take a moment to review these rules and ensure your posts are adhering to them.

Thanks,

Re: NEW MARS RULES

It has come to my knowledge that some do not like all the name calling, drama and are lurking because of it, in away as to not be part of it.

This free chat folder and topics have always been rather loose in the rule enforcment that pervails on the rest of the forum and as such its up to the forums actual owners to make that change to make it such that we will no longer tolerate such events.

At one time in the past the poltical folder was removed and that would be also up to the web master to do as I am not the one to make those changes.

We did lose 2 members earlier in the year as a result of racism, name calling and such in the other parts of the forum and that was taken care of by the web master after such content was reported.

I for one do not wish to lose any more members due to these types of events. We all are a bit passionate and need to reign it in from time to time; as others that do frequent forums here may be not so apt to post due to the intolerance that seems to be here to these events of name calling and more.

Every post that is marked is reviewed as reported especially in the remaining parts of the forum.

Moderators are few but they can change what is there, move the content and elevate the circumstances of the post to the admin levels to which I am not the only name in the list.

Do not be afraid to report as I would like to see the forum membership of those that post continue to grow and not retreat as it has in the past.

Spacenut and JBurk:

Just a heads-up:  I suspect we are about to be hit with a wave of spammers,  based on the most recent entries in the "science,  technology,  and astronomy" folder.

Thanks all it is taken care of...

You agree not to post any abusive, obscene, vulgar, slanderous, hateful, threatening, sexually-orientated or any other material that may violate any laws be it of your country, the country where “newmars.com” is hosted or International Law. Announcement: We've recently made changes to our user database and have removed inactive and spam users.  If you can not login, please re-register.

With that its seems like its time to come up with a common lock of user accounts that do not vist or post after a 90 day wait period.
There is no direct feature as written as of yet and while we can ban with a message its the message hat still must have a common note input into each banned account.

I was reminded by

In past years (as I understand it) the NewMars forum had a review process for applications for membership in the forum. I'd like to ask for a collective review of that idea.
How did the system work (way back then) and why did it fail?
The registration process seems to be effectively unrestricted right now.
An interview could be requested by an applicant.
The interview could be requested with an existing member who has agreed to serve as a gatekeeper.
If I were to serve as a gatekeeper, for example, I would ask the application a set of questions which would be agreed upon by the forum community.
Among these might be:
Why are you interested in NewMars forum?  (eg, are you wanting to sell something?)
How could you contribute to the forum?

Is there some way to begin stopping the first post again, until confirmed before an account can be activated fully for making posts?

Re: NEW MARS RULES

Saw this and the wording for the most part would apply here as well..

As a reminder, this [subreddit] insert [NewMars] is for civil discussion.
In general, be courteous to others. Debate/discuss/argue the merits of ideas, don't attack people.
Personal insults, shill or troll accusations, hate speech, any advocating or wishing death/physical harm, and other rule violations can result in a permanent ban.
If you see comments in violation of our rules, please report them.

Due to the many spammers we should also add something like this:

There is no reason to create an account if all that is desired is to lurk or to be disruptive as all we seek is the science of the mind to talk about space and all things there in.

kbd512 wrote:

How important is spamming a forum dedicated to Mars exploration and colonization?

Do you think most people come to this site looking for fake passports or porn or computer viruses?

How about one of you guys actually post something tangentially related to Mars?

At least that'd make the con more believable.

As a result of continued spamming attacks and large quantities of dormant accounts, it is the decision of the board to begin locking these accounts if a follow post is not made within 30 days. If you want your account, sorry reregister again and be sure to post so that you are not banned again.

adding this repost this way so as to not provoke

being purposely insulting or obtuse to what is said

declaring that you need or have credential to answer or to question supposed experts

Re: NEW MARS RULES

To everyone who posts here, please ensure that the content of your posts DOES NOT include any of the following types of prohibited content:

1. Advocating for or encouraging the use of physical violence (assault or battery / sexual assault / robbery / murder) towards other people, or encouraging any other behaviors that would constitute breaking the law (including, but not limited to, threats / extortion or coercion / bribery / theft / any form of harassment).  This also includes encouraging anyone to inflict harm upon themselves.

2. Using racial or ethnic slurs, slurs against people who are gay / lesbian / transgendered, or any other slurs on the basis of personal identity or immutable physical characteristics, content that is sexual in nature or would constitute sexual harassment, as well as any content that would be subject to harassment or slander and libel laws.

3. Dispensing medical advice without a license to practice medicine or other similar professional services that require specific credentials and licensing as mandated by law, such as providing legal advice.  It is the opinion of the New Mars Forums administrative staff that anyone who requires medical advice should speak to their doctor and anyone who requires legal advice should contact their attorney.  New Mars Forums will not engage in the practice of medicine or law, which includes dispensing medical or legal advice, as we lack the requisite credentials and licensing to do so.

4. Apart from posting prohibited types of content, vigorous and spirited debate is highly encouraged.  We also ask that you do your best to treat each other the way you would like to be treated.  People who are actually interested in space exploration and colonization are a tiny community relative to the general public, so we should all do our best not to ostracize or make others who share our common interest feel unwelcome here.  If you disagree with an argument, then do your best to counter the argument with a better argument, rather than attack the person making it.  New Mars Forums is a completely public forum that anyone can view, so we should also do our best to represent our common interest without undue prejudice or bias against our own members or other members of the general public, lest the general public perceive that our behavior is not commensurate with the goals that we would like humanity to achieve.

5. Whether you personally consider your post to be a joke, or not otherwise serious in nature, is not relevant to New Mars Forums' staff.  The posting of prohibited types of content is grounds for having your user account terminated.

If there are any questions regarding these forum rules, feel free to contact me or SpaceNut.  We will do our best to answer any questions you may have regarding these forum rules.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.
