When you start talking about a canned item you now are putting in water, the container materials mass and that will be quite heavy. The above option in first quote box was at 15% of the weigh 9,660 kilograms (10.6 U.S. tons) for a crew of 6 heading out to Mars as packaging and switching to glass or metals with water in the containers just put the ship into a much larger sizing.....

You will bring the water anyway, might as well bring it as food, the food can act as a radiation shield to protect the astronauts. Once they eat the food, the water will be recycled and used to grow crops.

That's a good point. 

I also think the first colonists will have with them a range of vitamin and mineral supplements, which will be important in maintaining health and help keeping hunger pangs at bay (a lot of dissatisfaction with food intake, when food is less than fresh, comes from the body sensing you are not getting the full range of required nutrients).

Vegetable oil keeps well. Kept cool it will last for at least for two years, probably a lot longer.  Using oil and condiments in meal preparation will help. Even on Mission One, the colonists should be able to enjoy fresh tomatoes, bean sprouts and lettuce.

Just take a good look at some of the "Prepper" websites. They specialize in long shelf life storage foods. May as well bring along some of the recyclable water in the form of canned food, along with fresh-frozen foods. It will increase morale of the pioneers. Are we any less resilient than those hardy pioneers who risked the Oregon Trail? They put up with poor food and starvation, poor water, disease, and hostile natives out to lift their hair. Yet they went onward to build the Pacific Northwest!

New topic on this has begun discussion a new in what we know for the bfr / starship combination which is flawed. As its lacking the sustainability of a fuel depot and other parts to make it safer for manned use.
