Re: The great crash

Have contiunued to fix topics that I have found the old artifacts in and the latest is solar sail - solar sail
The only ones that I could not edit were the posts by Josh Cryer as Administrator with the moderator powers that I have. They currently are not showing any shifting of the panels but there is the extra thick line before the reply post box that shows.

I have fixed the signature line that was in the profile and this is gone now....

Here is another oddity that I found in the sig line post 39 in topic http://www.newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1128&p=2

Give someone a sufficient [b:sig_uid][i:sig_uid]why[/i:sig_uid][/b:sig_uid] and they can endure just about any [b:sig_uid][i:sig_uid]how[/i:sig_uid][/b:sig_uid]

Also I fixed all the previously meantion code on page 1 and 2 and the topic is now allowing posts to it. See my post #38 for what was an issue....

Re: The great crash

I have been trying to pin down what is damaged and needs repair on the forum as well as getting a handle on when it went through its various conversions in php formats...

Here is a strange one in that there is no post in the topic...

Have been searching back into the other 0 post topics to see when the shifting pane event starts and have been able to confirm that its when the *quote* is not terminated correctly by */quote* but rather */quote:post_uid#*
where the * = [ or ] and the # = 0 through 14 for numbers which was member category rankings of priveledge with the :post_uid no longer applies....

Re: The great crash

Good News!  I have recovered the old database from the crashed server!  I found another set of files that I was able to restore into an old version of MySQL:

1. I set up an Azure VM running Ubuntu, compiled the old MySql version (5.0.51a) from source, copied in the files and voila!  All the old tables were available from the mysql command line.
2. I upgraded that instance of MySQL to 5.6 (the latest one), and installed Phpmyadmin.
3. I exported all the data using Phpmyadmin.
4. Right now I am importing the data into the web host we use for the Mars Society, and am setting up the old version of phpBB that the forums used when they crashed.

With luck, I should be able to convert this new instance of the crashed board to FluxBB, so that I can prepare & import the years we don't have on here.

I also have the old Wiki which I will also work on after this.

Wish me luck!

Re: The great crash

I have everything loaded into phpBB and I'm running the conversion to FluxBB now.   Here's some stats:

Last post on the crashed server:
Mon Jan 03, 2011 10:49 pm

Last post on here that was restored from our earlier backup.
Wednesday, May 28, 2008 10:45:58 PM

First new post on here after we restored the forums:
Saturday, November 19, 2011 10:44:14 PM

So, we'll be getting over 2.5 years of restored posts (everything between May 28, 2008 and Jan 3, 2011)

Will probably take me a few days to get this completed since I have to painstakingly merge in the users & posts tables to our current install without breaking anything.  I will do this on a test instance and make sure it works before I do it for real.  Stay tuned...

Re: The great crash

Hi guys,

This is a hard technical problem but I am hopeful it will be solved.  I have a working instance of phpBB with all the posts & users.  I am having issues converting that to FluxBB (which is prereq so I can easily prep a block of SQL that can be imported into this FluxBB instance).  I will keep at it but it's going to take longer than I thought.

If you want to help with this, please email me and I can show you what I have so far.  (Or if you just want to see some of the posts, I can give you the URL but I don't want to post it here since it is only temporary.)

I'm of no use here, I have an inkling of what is involved, but all my former experiments with phpBB tinkering led to pure chaos...

Re: The great crash

The version of the phpbb may be the issue. The other thought is the version of the sql may also be at the root cause.
Good luck

Re: The great crash

Before the crash we used phpBB version 3, but it was modified. There were modifications to add subscripts and superscripts so we could post chemical and atomic formulae. I was told there were some other modifications before that. The modifications may be interfering.

In late 2005 I asked what New Mars uses, so I could set up the same system for a politician. She wanted a forum on her website so she could interact with voters. I installed phpBB version 3 with no modifications. After all, it only had to work for the election campaign period.

If you want, I could look at it. I'll send an email.

Re: The great crash

looking at the log file I see that the version of sql was 5.0.5
there was input coming into it from drupal as well as the phpbb

Newmars_wiki tags and Fmars2009 pages as well

Re: The great crash

@RobertDyck I think you may be right about the addins for formulae, as the errors I was seeing were string-processing related.  I sent you all the details so let me know if you can figure things out.  If not, I will have time next weekend.

@SpaceNut yes I did a make/make install for the exact MySQL version (5.0.51a) that was being used and it worked flawlessly and I was able to put all the files I received from the crashed server's actual HD into the appropriate directory and all of them were accessible.  I have everything (EVERYTHING) from that server now including the NewMars wiki, actual website files for FMARS/MDRS/Chapters/etc, and all Mars Society data, etc etc etc.

The server crash back in 2011 was a setback for sure, but NewMars and the Mars Society and its projects are stronger than ever.

...At least i think so and I will continue to push push push as much as I can as long as I am alive.  Mars or Bust!

Re: The great crash

I found another little bug in the coversions from the Ikon board to the Php and that it how we identify the topic string as a view. links in quotes for the
ikon board was * viewtopic.php?T=3212 *
php is             * viewtopic.php?id=3212 *
I am not sure for when we blend the topics back in or not...
I topics that are identified with the T are still there if you change it to ID in the string....

topic post was here http://newmars.com/forums/viewtopic.php … 042#p67042
the links says different discussion....
