Edit update:

Approval happens within 24 hours. Less if around midnight EST as that's closer to the time I get computer access to do the approval. Enjoy the forums, and welcome! Sorry for this inconvenience.

Thank ** you ** for your careful attention to the procedure we are attempting to put into place!

This is an initial reply to let you know that Moderator newmarsmember received your application and is moving it forward as rapidly as possible.

You are the first of what I hope will be many applicants who would like to gather in a safe place on the Internet, to collaborate in the Mars Settlement undertaking.

For that reason, I request that you have patience as we (forum team) try to find the best practice to bring you in.

My first concern is security for yourself.  The forum is open to the world, so we want to keep your identity secret.

Your CV is safe with me, and with the leadership team.  However, I'd like to insure that only information you want made public is shown to the public.

Apologies for not thinking of this sooner. It's not exactly intuitive in the settings.

Newly registered can also be prevented from accessing PM until their account is fully approved, great facility in this SPAM TORRENTING world we live in

what's up with all the new spamlinks in the profile pages of the newer users?

What's happening to this place?

I looked at the Userlist and selected the new users option. Some new users did have spam links but most did not. Perhaps an additional protection is that they could be required to include a cogent, relevant post with their application to the forum. Or perhaps they could be required to include a short bio that describes their interest in Mars exploration.

there's still quite an influx of spammy sounding usernames... They all have in common that they do not seem to post.... Biding their time? or are the spamfilters bouncing spam-posts or something?

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

For some reason the non-posting members' profiles are public, and I can't turn it off, I'll look for a solution. I just deleted 3k spammers, manually, but then I did the math, and it would take me weeks to get rid of them all. I'll see if I can't get the admin to delete them with one simple SQL entry. (I have to get the fluxbb folks to help me with that first though.)

Just be assured that no spammer can post here, though they can register, it is futile. Sorry if the userlist is misleading in any way. It is not an indictment on the forum. They can register with their spam addresses, but no one can post without my permission (and I've allowed posters every week for awhile now, the email method works).

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

Wait, so you can register, and you *are* then registered even before you get a green light for posting privileges? you can then enter stuff...  Is than not a huge security risk?

That sounds like a golden opportunity for spammers... And if you get crawled, and the crawler sees spam or malware links, what's keeping Google et al from flagging NM as a security risk?

(And al the other fluxbb bb's too?)

And would it be possible to integrate the email with the registration page so that it's easier for prospective users?

Actually, on second thought I suppose someone would have to read the spam that they will inevitably be.

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

Once you register you can't post, but your profile becomes visible, so the spammers are putting links in their profile, which the forum software doesn't disallow. I've tried. It is somewhat crappy as it's compelling spammers to join, but they can't post or otherwise disrupt normal behavior.

Otherwise New Mars isn't being, currently, harmed by this, as we're the second hit for "mars forums" so I hope to get rid of the threat. I'm just super distracted by other stuff right now.

(New Mars did get flagged before as a security risk but that's because someone hacked the site and injected their malware, we're up to date now though so it's not a big of a risk right now, we're clean.)

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

I see that we are now up to 10 pages of usernames that have never posted to any topics...with what appears to be just one poster that made a post just to keep the account alive from deletion it would seem.

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

Last week I did a mass delete of most usernames that have never posted... 99% were spammers.  I will go through the folks that have only posted once and if I see any spam in their profile I will delete them too.  No mercy smile

If I accidentally deleted you, please re-register and drop me a note, I will restore you.

Re: NEWLY REGISTERED USERS MUST BE APPROVED BEFORE THEY CAN POST.

I see that we are still getting 20 plus newly registered a day which even if we go 1 to post would be great to add to the depth of knowledge and conversations that we are having about space....
