Re: What if te next major planet out was a brown dwarf?

So, you think it's okay for a bunch of urbanites to move somewhere, declare a property tax over everyone's land, and so force them off it? I'm not talking about our Amish farm moving to Manhattan, I'm talking about Manhattan moving to our Amish farm. What gives them the right to seize the farm so they can build their city?

Also, I'm not talking about states, I'm talking about what is right here...

Well, analogies are imperfect.  Let's say a bunch of urbanites move into space and build a dyson sphere around a star and don't want to sell parts of it to amish people for peanuts.  They don't have to.  Happy?

So you believe in the race to the top, with all superior beings eliminating their inferiors underneath them. What does that end up as? One supreme electronic being ruling a whole Solar System? What is such a being going to do with a Dyson Sphere? Seems rather boring to me! One "Computer God" filling the whole Solar System, all by himself? How many people aspire to be the ultimate power in the Solar System? Wouldn't some settle for being a little lesser than what they could be so they could interact with others?

But I wasn't suggesting that sort of scenario. I thought it was clear we were talking about colonists who were already at the system being driven out because the posthumans can make "better" use of it...

Or, I colonise a planet, and some people think it's acceptable to build a Dyson sphere and deprive me of sunlight...

Brown Dwarfs are easier to build a Dyson Sphere around, as they are smaller, so therefore your Dyson Sphere can be smaller. This cold one would not be much use as an energy source, but if you got there, you probably have fusion reactors, a brown dwarf probably has satellites with plenty of fusion fuel in themselves. You could dismantle those satellites, separating out the fusion fuel and build a double Dyson Sphere, one for the ground the other for the sky say for instance 200 km further out from the brown dwarf.

Re: What if te next major planet out was a brown dwarf?

That's... not what a Dyson sphere is. A Dyson sphere is a sphere (actually more of a cloud) that collects nearly all the energy output of a star. What you're talking about is a supramundane planet. But if you have the technology to build one around a brown dwarf, you can build one anywhere...

But I doubt Josh's upload will care about building supramundane planets, not needing gravity and all...

The topic could be one of the possible solutions to what is currently termed Planet X.....
