Mentioned this before, but the old board before the crash was best compendium on the net for informed ideas for exploring Mars. We should emails to those former contributors to bring them back to the new board.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

That said I am back after the short nearly 6 months with no internet access to be even able to post on the slow dialup that I once had. Have finally ditched to hard wire phone line and gone wireless....

Will begin posting once I have more time as I once did.....

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Is anybody else having difficulty getting logged in in that last couple of days?  Takes multiple tries,  if successful at all.

I haven't been having trouble.  Which browser do you use?  Try emptying your cache and deleting your history for the last week.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Josh:

New computer is Windows 8,  which I despise.  No way around that,  though.  It uses windows explorer as its default,  although I start from google's page.

Symptoms:  I log in normally,  and it says I did so successfully with the little brief message.  But when I look top-of-page,  it says login,  not logout,  and there is no box in which to enter text when I look at any given thread.

It took 6 tries to get in long enough to post this.  5 failures out of 6 attempts is not good.  And that's with 3 browser restarts along the way.  And,  I cleaned out all the cookies and temp files before I started.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Well, first off I'd recommend downloading Google Chrome.  It might not solve your problem, but it's a far better browser smile

Perhaps enable cookies?  I was googling around for people having issues with login on fluxBB, and someone else having what appeared to be the same problem fixed their issue by changing their timezone.  I enabled daylight savings time in your account (You can disable it at any time, of course), and that may have fixed the problem.  For simplicity's sake, if you have further issues feel free to email me.  I believe you have my email, but if not it's my newmars username at yahoo.com.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Well I might as well chime in that my Android phone does the same thing, but I haven't the time to properly diagnose it. I can hit "post reply" get the login form, login and redirect to the submit form, and post - but then I'm logged out and the site turns red again. I have not experienced that on any of my other machines, but it always happens on my phone.

I think I have that problem on my phone as well, actually.  I'll ask joshcryer if he has any idea what's going on.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Login is still unreliable for me in this new Windows-8 laptop.  It took over a dozen attempts this time.  I've selected log-me-in-everytime,  let's see if that works better.

What has your experience been since?   That's quite an odd problem, and I'm not really sure what could cause it.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

My problem is most definitely a software incompatibility problem with Windows 8 on my new laptop.  I just logged in easily on the first attempt,  using my wife's older machine,  which I think is Windows 7,  or maybe one step earlier than that.

This is Microsoft trying rather unsuccessfully to make their devices resemble Apple devices in their screen appearance and operation.  I am not very happy with them,  as this log-in glitch is not the only trouble I have had.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

To be fair, I don't think the issue can necessarily be blamed on the operating system.  I had that same issue when I first joined the forums, when I had a desktop running Windows XP.   It did not occur on my mom's desktop, which also used XP.   I'm going to try to pull Josh Cryer out of hiding to see if we can get a permanent fix going.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Josh:

I just found out something interesting regarding the log-in difficulties.  If I go straight to log-in without looking around on the forums,  it logs me in on the second attempt,  even on this Windows 8 laptop.  If I look around first,  I cannot log in no matter how many attempts.  The clue was logging in on the second attempt after leaving the website and then coming back.  It is the second attempt,  always,  but it does work.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

Cookies-or-not,  this pattern is very consistent.  Second attempt login is successful,  as long as I have not looked around on the site.

We've updated the software on the board.  Make sure when you login, that you check "Remember Me".  If this still happens, please reply with your Browser and OS versions.

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

I know this is a late response, but be sure you are coming to http://newmars.com/forums/ not http://www.newmars.com/forums/

Since New Mars migrated there has been this tiny problem (and I experienced it myself for a time when upgrading accounts), so change your bookmarks appropriately. The 'cookie' your computer saves is "domain specific" and the 'www' matters a lot.

Sorry for being in hiding, as another of my favorite mods said, I am just sort of not lately invested in Mars. We'll colonize it one day, but today is not that day, maybe once SpaceX is launching 9H I'll start posting more. I really feel bad for neglecting posting so much!

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

I get the following error when I try to post with Firefox or Chrome. I had to use the obscure browser Seamonkey to post.

Info
Bad HTTP_REFERER. You were referred to this page from an unauthorized source. If the problem persists please make sure that 'Base URL' is correctly set in Admin/Options and that you are visiting the forum by navigating to that URL. More information regarding the referrer check can be found in the FluxBB documentation.

Another strange thing that happens here is: I have to log in TWICE in a row, in order to actually be logged in!

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

The twice login could be due to connecting with
http://newmars.com/forums
versus coming in from
http://www.newmars.com/forums
as the cookies for each are different as the redirect may be using the other

What happened to the MySQL and select database login issue that happened yesterday and is now ok, just wondering,,,,,

Re: NewMars.com Technical Error Reporting

I changed our hosting so that the site is always without the "www.".  Apologies for folks that have to login again because they were only using www, but this should prevent some of the errors and double-logins that people we experiencing.
