What do you think of the idea of making a plausible planetary romance book, such as the one by S.M. Stirling. How do you alter the history of the planet Mars and Venus so as to make Venus inhabited by dinosaurs and cave people, and Mars inhabited by a dying civilization of many of the Early Pulp science fiction novels of the early 20th century?
I think the first thing you need to do is involve some terraforming, so that the Explorers from Earth are confronted with the final products of terraforming rather than beginning such projects themselves. In Stirling's first novel of the series, The Sky People, we find that Venus has been terraformed long ago and populated with dinosaurs and people.
In the second book, In The Courts of Crimson Kings a population of martian humans has developed into a blossoming civilization, that has since fallen from its high point. The altered nature of these two planets only begins to have a significant effect on human history on Earth in 1947, when telescopic observations comfirmed the presence of oxygen, water, and life on Venus and Mars, it is only when rocket technology develops in the wake of World War II, that real efforts to send humans to these two planets begins. Werner Von Braun begins his "Mars Project" in the 1950s, the space race begins a decade e.arly with the Soviets sending the first probe to Venus and the United States sending its first probe to Mars in the 1960s
