Not the tiny one they've been building out in Arizona or New Mexico a bit at a time, but a real single large building with most of its volume owing to its height?

Yar, but in truth aren't a lot of places in Europe and Japan up against it like that now or will be in the near future? I don't know how it is now, but I remember folks I knew in the UK a few years ago talking about living with their parents well into their 20s because renting an apartment cost so much. Maybe I'm jsut biased because I'd rather live in an arcology thana suburb.

Those things would be a political and social nightmare.

more or less. Basikcally, It's a city in one big building, that gets more space from height than width (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/arcology)
I think that most cities that are big now may end up, accidently, as chaotic arcologies.

I think the closest we'll get is a large high rise with empty stalls were modular dwellings can be lifted in and out.
