The Golden Tin Can
Make me a place in the sky,
Where nations can come to gather so high
Built with gold but mad of tin
Delicate walls too thin
Make me a place in the sky
In the name of science it will fly
The research dollars will bleed dry
And the scientists won’t know why
Make me a place in the sky
To some day burn up and fry
A monument to the government guy
Who’s vesion goes in circles and dies
Make me a place in the sky
To risk progress in a name of a lie
Testing the faith of government funded space
The beginning or the end of the race
In a nation bankrupt of faith
Holding all nations in place
With a bird about to die
In god they trust the shuttle will fly
And will this tin can come crashing down
Upon the engineers whose hands were bound
By the politics who feed
While the vision bleeds
And the end could come
Before real progress has begun.

So sad, John ... so much sadder than my friend who is going on 87.

Find me a place where heaven holds
Fragile earthling dreams forged in golds
And silver tin could be’s, might be’s-
Far above clouds, and lands, and seas.
Take me to a place where heaven holds
Window tomorrow while star dream unfolds
All could be’s, might be’s within my gaze-
Where waiting Moon and Mars glow ablaze.
In the place where heaven holds
Unfolding dreams of broken molds,
All could be’s, might be’s, will be-
These dreams but wait you and me.

On shores of dust, across an empty sea
Pauses lonely voyage, Opportunity
A sight beyond old Magellan’s dream
That lived beneath this Martian gleam
Victoria, alone, crossed all troubled straights
Summoning brave men onward to tempt their fates
Five hundred years from first sail to undreamt sight
Victoria, again, calls brave men to flight
Come hither, come on, come to explore
As Magellan did on world before
Chase after Victoria across an empty sea
Chase after Victoria, and opportunity.

Herm Goes to Mars (continued from page 12)
He spent six months flying through space
To begin the earthworm space race.
The transit was boring.
He spent his time coring
Through red dirt inside a glass case.
At last landing day did come near.
The ship might burn up Herm did fear
If they came in too low.
Past the planet they’d go
If they skipped off the atmosphere.
The ship was blazing like crimson
This landing felt like a hard one
But they came down just fine,
And with Herm they would dine
On veggies grown from the garden!

Moonlight lullaby goodnight,
Babes asleep then take to flight,
Dreaming as dreaming children do,
Of every star that shines in view.
With silver shine of rocket gleam
On thunder fire towards far unseen,
Burning bright as a comets tail
Blazing towards untraveled trail,
Every sun now lies in wait
With worlds unmade to create,
By hands and hope and daring child
That seeks to tame the endless wild.
Gravity free above beyond
Broken free of all earthly bond,
Chasing deep into long dark sky,
Moonlight will sleep, in lullaby.

dreams in silver gold-
Wild abandon
tin
Red-brick, earth in clay
And
furrowed
ground
Setting sea
set
sunk
And dust, Sweet salmon pink
Swirl,
and wisp
of blue star
Low on the horizon
Gleaming
never mind
Where ocean howled
Long and low
From afar
To goodnight moon
Goodnight.
Sirens call
Calls
Goodnight;
rising sun
Pale sick
Long and low from afar
While all the stars
Glitter on.

Thanks clark, I really like that one. Flowing images and a tone, not bleak, but bare - just a hint of bittersweet.
