Re: Martian Justice - New Mars style...

So, an idea...

Sometimes, for whatever reasons, people can become a bit caustic, a bit hurt, a bit impolite. We can all agree that we might like less of the 'troll' behavior, and more of the... well, just less troll behavior. Right?

Now, the options available to us range from public flame wars, ignoring the offender, or having Adrian delete or ban any offending poster or post. But is there another way?

I'm glad you asked.  big_smile

Now, I don't know much about this Ikonboard 3.1.1, but I was thinking that instead of falling back on the previously identified options, that we might create (that's the royal 'we', which means Adrian) a section at the bottom of the main page board called "Troll Cage". Or whatever else anyone thinks might get the message across.

Instead of out and out deletion of posts, or banning, perhaps we might relegate the offender, or the offending posts into the "Troll Cage" section.

If it were possible, I might even suggest that a little message is placed next to our message board names with something along the lines of, and to use me as an example, Clark "last in the Troll Cage X days ago".

Of course Adrian would still be able to delete or ban at his discretion, as he sees fit, but I imagine that this might give him the opportunity to be less severe, while still maintaining a semblance of order over this sometimes raucous place.

Sometimes, you don't have to 'space' someone to make them behave, or calm down. Future Martians and space settlers will see the sense in all of this with their very own 'time out' room onboard their ships, or in their Habs. So should we.

All are welcome to poke fun, or praise.  big_smile

Re: Martian Justice - New Mars style...

I don't find a troll cage desirable nor necessary. I don't want to see flames or personal attacks *anywhere* on this site, and if people cannot manage such a simple thing or at least take it off-site, then I will have absolutely no problem in banning them. Is it so much to ask people to simply drop an argument when it becomes clear there is no chance of bringing the other person around to your view?

A troll cage would only legitimise trolls and flames, and if people want to argue in that kind of way, they can do so outside of New Mars. I have seen many highly popular forums on the Internet, and they do not use a 'troll cage'. Instead, they use a much more strict policy of warning and banning. I would rather not do this, but if things continue to get difficult, then I will consider making partial bans more frequent. I am also planning to appoint at least two forum moderators who will be able to independently warn members and close threads.

Re: Martian Justice - New Mars style...

Precisely, with my experience on online forums (and you may know of my postings on game forums, clark), the "troll cage" idea almost always leads to people acting like idiots intentionally, just to see if they can't make it into the troll cage.
