Re: Chat

A couple cute memes on Facebook. I hope you'll take them in jest, as intended.

Re: Chat

I'm not "Liberal" in the sense that Republicans use the word. I'm moderate. I have lived in the US, does that give me the right to an option on the presidential election? I didn't like either Trump nor Hillary, so hoped Gary Johnson would have done better. Tried to encourage Americans who wanted a woman in the White House to vote Jill Stein. But Gary was, um, wanting. Besides, every Democrat I know is proud of USA, would celebrate the 4th and not burn the flag. And I have customers even here in Canada who are Trump fans, so I've had to be tolerant. Trump said he wants humans to orbit the Moon in 2019, and boots on Mars in 2024. That's our goal, so let's do what we can to help him achieve that. As someone who doesn't vote in American elections, I'm willing to work with whomever American voters chose to put in the White House.

Re: Chat

Still waiting for restoration of my old "Newfoundland" thread, from before the crash. A story of rugged independent settlers to out-do Dr. Zubrin's spin on Louis and Clark. From a time long before separation of Canada and USA, a settlement established by businessmen without any government help what so ever. And when the first navy contingent with marines arrived to collect taxes, the ship with the admiral and taxes didn't get back to England alive. It was what, 30 years?, before anyone dared try to collect taxes from them again? A story appropriate for the 4th.

Re: Chat

What is the difference between a military parade and an airshow put on by the Air Force?

I reckon all the opposition is from USAF bots, who don't want to the Army to be allowed to show off their toys as well.

Re: Chat

The air force does not do it on or as a celebration but as air shows of flying capability in groups such as the Blue angles for the general public in combination with other parts to the air show on the ground with many old planes

The Armies stuff is not just tanks, Humvees, Jeeps, as it covers rocket mobile launchers and much more. Stepping shoulder to shoulder marching on the ground.

Planes do not parade down the streets or show off any armament...

Re: Chat

For RobertDyck ....

Two articles showed up together in one of my news feeds this evening ....

The first was interesting because it points to a growth opportunity for people with the right skill set, and I get the impression you might be a good fit.  The equipment shown in the article will require people to install, train and maintain it.

The second was interesting (to me at least) because it reports on a (not too surprising) advantage of Canada over the US due to differences in government policy.

I'm not sure how, or even if, either or both of these might be interesting to you, but I figured it is worth taking a chance.

My son watches the ice road truckers of the north and finds that quite interesting in just how isolated some communities are and to what risk is under taken to get supplies for continued growth and economics of the local people that survive there.

Re: Chat

For SpaceNut re #116 ... I catch quite a few of the ice road trucker videos because they are broadcast by the weather channel in our area.  I'll bet your son knows who Jamie is << grin >>.

Another local channel broadcast a story about an Alaskan village relocating due to climate change.  The process is taking several years, depending (apparently) on funding.  Much of the labor is being done by the residents, although there is some reliance on outside expertise to introduce modern technology for remote living as homes are built at higher elevations.  A great deal of attention is being paid (as near as I can tell) to preservation of the native culture, instead of trying to wipe it out as has been done in past.

Best wishes to all who celebrate Thanksgiving, and best wishes to everyone for a productive and enjoyable Thursday.

Re: Chat

Actually worked at Garden Hill. Skidoo ride literally across the middle of the lake. It is one of those communities supplied by ice road trucks.

Flight home delayed. Flight this morning was on a Dash-8 aircraft, considered the big plane in the north. Right after I landed an airline person announce the flight to Winnipeg was indefinitely delayed for maintenance. An aircraft repair technician would have to fly up to fix the plane. It's not going anywhere until it's fixed. Turned out the early afternoon flight was cancelled, and the 6pm flight I was scheduled to return on. Now waiting for the 8:15pm flight.

Re: Chat

That's funny Robert!

I liked the part in the Austin Powers movie where they followed up on one of the henchmen killed by Austin Powers...phoning the henchman's wife to let her know the bad news and so on, commiserating about the devastating effect on the family...Henchmen are humans too! smile

Re: Chat

Back to God's River. Waiting on airport. Overnight stay, return flight tomorrow. They couldn't get me a room at the fishing lodge. Last couple times I stayed at "the camp", which is 5 trailers the size of mobile homes bolted together. It has 10 rooms, each with 2 twin beds and a small closet for each bed. Also has a commercial kitchen. But no room there either. Really? I didn't see that many construction workers last time. But this time they arranged for me to stay at the nursing station. Free but they asked me to bring a treat for staff there.

For RobertDyck re "camp" made of trailers bolted together...

The arrangement you described reminds me of (probably multiple) conceptualizations of what living quarters would be like on Mars.

Best wishes for safe travels for your return!

Re: Chat

Aircraft made a stop. Refuelling. Cell service here, which tells me I'm not at my destination. Too soon as well. Other passengers tell me we're at God's Lake Narrows. The odd thing is GPS says I'm still in Winnipeg, in a residential neighborhood. I have Google Maps and an app that reads cellphone sensors, GPS and network location are slightly different but very close to eachother, both say Winnipeg. Why?

Re: Chat

Robert:

To answer your question,  because nobody thought to program the computer for what to do with rural locations.  Urban/suburban locations got far higher priority.

I had the same problem here on the farm in Texas for several years.  The country highway that goes by my place leads to other roads at each end,  that are considered "suburban" to two towns.  For several years,  people using GPS were told my location was at one or the other end of that country highway,  not out here along the middle of it where I really am.  Off by many miles.

"They" (whoever the hell "they" are) did finally fix that lack a few years ago.  Most folks trying to find me with with GPS,  can now find me.  I would expect that correction has not yet been done (and may never get done) for locations in the Canadian outback.

Even today,  I still find a paper map and real landmarks a more reliable way to navigate.  (And I know how to give good directions,  too.)  But then I'm an old-timer.

GW

Right now temperature is -22°C (-8°F), humidity 70%, wind 11km/h (7 mph), wind gusts 17km/h (11 mph), windchill -30°C (-22°F). That's not the coldest it gets here, but feels damn cold!

Re: Chat

Well the last weekend here had warm 60' F and had a ton of snow melt occur such that we have very little of it covering the ground. Had to stop parking my vehicle in the front of the house where its easier for the wife to get in and out of as it was turning into a mud hole...
Its cooling off again once more such that we are getting mixed percip of mist to snow but its not amounting to very much.
