Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

McCaine has passed at 81 a true American not a party follower but a man of conviction that spoke for the american people that he served. John McCain, ‘maverick’ of the Senate and former POW, dies at 81. The Arizona senator, who ran twice unsuccessfully for president, died at his ranch near Sedona on Saturday. He was diagnosed with brain cancer last July. John Sidney McCain III was an American statesman who served as the senior United States Senator from Arizona, a seat to which he was first elected in 1986. He was the Republican nominee for President of the United States in the 2008 election, which he lost to Barack Obama. The world lost a great man in John McCain. He was an honorable, kind, brave and fundamentally decent human being.

McCain requested Obama, George W. Bush deliver eulogies at funeral

Obama statement "we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher — the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed."

Mr. Bush issued a statement hailing McCain as a " man of deep conviction and a patriot of the highest order." "Some lives are so vivid, it is difficult to imagine them ended," Mr. Bush said. "Some voices are so vibrant, it is hard to think of them stilled."

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Not even burried in the ground and the war to gain the seat has already started....

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey will choose John McCain's replacement

The replacement to serve until the 2020 election and it is uncertain who Arizona Governor Doug Ducey, a Republican, will choose to succeed McCain, the late senator's wife, Cindy McCain, has been floated as a possible successor.
The list is long for the future with many names:

Kirk Adams, former ambassador to Finland Barbara Barrett, and former Sen. Jon Kyl, according to the Arizona Republic.

McCain's colleague in Arizona, Senator Jeff Flake, is retiring this year, leaving his seat open to several Republican competitors. Rep. Martha McSally, former state Senator Kelli Ward and former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio are vying for the Republican nomination for the open seat. McSally is considered the establishment choice, while Ward and Arpaio are controversial conservative firebrands. Arpaio was pardoned by President Trump this year. On the Democratic side, Representative Kyrsten Sinema is a near lock for the nomination.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Born right into a army household on Aug. 29, 1936, in Panama, John McCain adopted his household’s custom by becoming a member of the U.S. Navy. Throughout the Vietnam Warfare, he was captured by North Vietnamese forces and held as a prisoner of conflict from 1967 to 1973.

Trump Reacts To John McCain's Death

President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed his condolences to the family of Sen. John McCain, who died Saturday after a battle with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain. Our hearts and prayers are with you!
    — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 26, 2018

Fox News analyst Brit Hume took a swipe at President Trump over his tweet offering condolences to the family of GOP Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), who died Saturday at the age of 81.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

There seems to have been quite a bit of the love hate relationship for Senator John McCain not only with in the party but also from our enemies.

Russia Hated John McCain, and Will Miss Him Dearly

Why Trump has stewed over being denied....with Sen. James Inhofe an Oklahoma Republican, saying that the late Sen. John McCain is 'partially to blame' for the controversy over President Trump's raising and then re-lowering American flags. Finally settled with the veteran out cry for decency.

Lindsey Graham reveals McCain's last words to him in tearful interview; "The last thing he said to me was, 'I love you, I have not been cheated,'" Graham, a South Carolina Republican, ...

Shunned at two funerals and one (royal) wedding so far, President Trump may be well on his way to becoming  President Non Grata: Trump often unwelcome and unwilling to perform basic rituals of the office

So much for party unity as Republicans resist plan to rename Senate building for McCain being reluctant to take away an honor already bestowed on an earlier Senate titan — and a leader of Southern senators during a tumultuous era in the nation's history.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Seeing and hearing the many thoughts from all....
Obama remembers private meetings with McCain at White House: 'We never doubted we were on the same team'

Obama, who ran against McCain in the 2008 presidential election. "He made us better presidents, just as he made the Senate better, just as he made this country better."

John McCain recalled as loving father, joking friend, statesman who 'called on us to be better'

Meghan McCain seemed to speak directly to the contrast between her father and President Trump, with whom he had a tense relationship. In an apparent reference to Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan, she said, "The America of John McCain has no need to be made great again because America was always great."

Meghan McCain gives emotional tribute to father: 'John McCain was defined by love'

"We gather here to mourn the passing of American greatness. The real thing, not cheap rhetoric from men who will never come near the sacrifice he gave so willingly, nor the opportunistic appropriation of those who lived lives of comfort and privilege while he suffered and served. He was a great fire who burned bright."

I wouldn't normally comment on American affairs but we are being inflicted with unending "positive" news items on this person who most Britons would not even recognise.

Given we are being afflicted with so much reporting on  his highly politicised obsequies and I would just like to point out the man was a rank hypocrite who supported hard border walls when it suited him electorally:

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/ … 97fba709c6

Just like he flirted with populist sentiment by appointing Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Also, he was a cheerleader for the war in Iraq - hated by the liberal-left.

And he personally partook in war crimes in Vietnam, bombing civilians with high explosives and subjecting them to Agent Orange chemical poisons.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Well Hanoi does have a different view of McCain and so does the solder that capture him as he did not see him as a war enemy. He was tortured and held captive for five and a half years as a prisoner of war during the Vietnam War, an experience that shaped the rest of his life. In Hanoi, McCain is etched in the city's history, with a memorial at the lake where his plane crashed and at the prison — now a museum — where he was held captive

Revisiting Hanoi, where John McCain was shot down and held as a POW

Service at that time was demanded of boys that had reached the age of 18 or you were jailed or would have fled to canada....
Trump avoided serving..... to which there are others that did not serve.....

Barack Obama wrote:

So, cancer did not scare him. And he would maintain that buoyant spirit to the very end. Too stubborn to sit still, opinionated as ever, fiercely devoted to his friends and, most of all, to his family. It showed his irreverence, his sense of humor, a little bit of a mischievous streak.

After all, what better way to get a last laugh to make George and I say nice things about him to a national audience.

"He was honorable — always recognizing that his opponents were still patriots and human beings," Bush said of the late senator.

I think his last opponent would be surprised to hear that.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

I've seen a lot of far-right and alt-right lies and trash about McCain for a long time now.  This is politically-motivated lying,  because McCain could not abide Trump or the far/alt right extremists who support Trump,  or the hateful policies they tried to pass.

The real John McCain was exactly who Barack Obama,  George W. Bush,  and Meghan McCain said in their eulogies.  He was a war hero tortured during captivity in Vietnam,  who returned to Vietnam without malice (!!) to help normalize relations.  The Vietnamese saw this,  and erected some monuments to him.

Flawed or not,  he was a lifetime-long public servant who valued service to country way above party or personal gain.  Those are the right priorities.

Most (but not all,  there really are a precious few exceptions) of those in Congress or the administration today cannot truthfully make that claim about prioritizing service to country above all. I'd like to see them all replaced by people who really do prioritize correctly.  Trouble is,  people with the right priorities are repelled by the notion of going to DC to serve the public,  because of the over-politicized sewer it has become.

Some start on cleaning up the mess might be had by making lying for political purposes a capital crime,  easy to prove.  Truth has been absent in DC for far too long.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

The real fight begins after his funeral as the seat he held must be filled.

The govenor will make this appointment to which there are some basic questions that still are to be seen as to whom will be selected. Will it be a Trump loyalist for the republican party, Will it be some one unknown or will it be a member of the McCain family....

Since the elected are to be loyal to the people one can only hope that whom ever is selected will remember this as McCain did..

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

A story as GW meantioned Vietnamese Americans hail McCain as 'our hero,' thanking him for his service to the refugee community

In the week since his death, flags all over Orange County's Little Saigon have flown at half-mast for the two-time presidential candidate. They celebrated McCain for fighting alongside the South Vietnamese and for championing political detainees.

Some residents took out ads in Vietnamese-language newspapers to express their condolences. On Facebook, they shared their thoughts on McCain. About 200 even traveled in two chartered buses to Phoenix, the Arizona capital, to catch a glimpse of his casket lying in state.

They stood in the blistering sun for an hour and a half for a chance to view and salute the flag-draped coffin that McCain's wife, Cindy, earlier had tearfully pressed her face against.

The Vietnamese immigrants wore yellow T-shirts with three red stripes, honoring the South Vietnamese flag, and splashed with the words, "We salute our hero Senator John McCain."

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Political lying is not confined to Washington, GW. We have plenty of it in the UK. I think it should be treason, but making it a crime is not likely to work, unfortunately. There will be degrees of untruth, partial truth, non-political circumstances etc. At the moment we rely on the Press to expose this and hold the liars to account which is , no doubt, why the press has been so roundly attacked and undermined by some politicians in recent times.

Re: Senator John McCain's Dead at 81

Arizona governor names former Sen. Jon Kyl as McCain's replacement

Kyl's appointment means the Republican attorney who had been guiding President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through the confirmation process will now have a vote on Kavanaugh's confirmation.
In choosing Kyl, Ducey tapped a figure who is well-liked by both Trump's political team and McCain's family and allies. However, with Kyl saying he won't run for re-election, it also leaves open the possibility of a bruising primary in 2020.
Under Arizona law, Ducey is responsible for appointing a McCain replacement until a November 2020 special election. The winner of that special election will fill the remaining two years of McCain's term. Then, in 2022, the seat will be on the ballot for a full six-year term.

Ducey said at the news conference it's not clear whether Kyl will remain in the Senate through 2020. And Kyl said he won't run for re-election.

So Arizona is getting a Trump follower yes man and not a person that represents the people of the state.....
