Marspedia

Does this forum still make sense? Maybe it does, as we will be putting a lot of new effort soon into Marspedia.org

Stay tuned for some announcements

Re: Marspedia

The Israeli Moon Lander (apparently) contains a data store including the English language Wikipedia archive.

https://www.space.com/israel-moon-lande … litch.html

Beresheet stands about 5 feet tall (1.5 meters) and is designed to spend two Earth days on the moon taking photos and other measurements. The spacecraft is carrying an Israeli flag, a time capsule, a "Lunar Library" containing the full English contents of Wikipedia and more for the Arch Mission Foundation, as well as a laser retroreflector experiment for NASA.

I bring this up as a stretch goal for the Mars Society.  A package containing a data store assembled by the Mars Society could be included in a future Mars lander.

Mars Society Partners with Marspedia Project to Help Build Mars Online Encyclopedia

The organization is striving to make Marspedia the one-stop shop for all information related to Mars, including: articles describing past historical missions to the planet, current knowledge about Mars, technology related to ongoing exploration, future concepts such as terraforming and plans for human exploration and settlement of the Red Planet.

Re: Marspedia

For SpaceNut .... your hint in Housekeeping about the former Mars Wiki led me to investigate ... the Wiki is frozen as it came out of a restore from a crash.  The site refers readers to Marspedia.

http://marspedia.org/Home

Marspedia is organized as a Specific Hierarchy of Categories
The Editorial Subcommittee examined the past ad hoc approach of categorization of Marspedia articles and found it to be lacking a structure of how information about Mars is displayed and searched. The Subcommittee wanted a logical and navigable hierarchy of categories. This would also form the core of a new Browse experience. The new Marspedia category tree is much more focused on the future and specifically expanded on aspects of the future human exploration and permanent settlement of the Red Planet. It also focuses on outreach (advocacy) and the arts and literature to encourage individuals and the public at large to support human exploration and settlement there. Finally Marspedia is focused on providing the best source of information about past, present, and future exploration and settlement of Mars.

View Category:Main

This would appear to be where we should be looking if we are looking for a place to store knowledge that would be useful to future Mars settlers, in possession of whatever the electronic equivalent of a Mars Handbook would be.

In my conception of such a "Handbook", a future Mars settler should be able to find the specifications for repair of a widget (on one hand) and the overall philosophy for the social structure of the entire community, on the other.

A great deal of useful knowledge (facts and insights about them) is accumulated (more or less at random) in this forum.

It would be a major undertaking to try to capture even a fraction of what is stored, let alone keep up with new information (and wisdom) arriving all the time.

Still, it seems (to me at least) as though the effort would be worth attempting.

Re: Marspedia

Marspedia is a hand off from another organization before it was lost.

While the lost in time was due to multiple pho programs writing into the same data base.
It's data should be recoverable.

News about Marspedia
October 16, 2020 - 2020 Annual Report presented by James Burk & Frank Crossman at the Mars Society Virtual Convention.

There seems to have been an update as recently as December 26th (I'm assuming 2020 but am not certain of that)

To entire forum ...

Is there anyone else in the group who is interested in the possibility of creating a long-lived(ie, permanent) store of knowledge for use by a hypothetical Mars settler?

I've been tossing out ideas (generally to SpaceNut) but there appears to be a chance that there might be a suitable venue in the Mars Society "family" of activities ...
