Steel yourself...wood this be better?

Looks like might be an interesting future technology for Mars...

A hi-tech wood pulp technology might be much better suited to a small Mars colony than steel.

Other vegetable fibers would probably be more use on Mars as you don't need to wait so long for them to grow to a usable size as you do for wood pulp.
Iron can probably be found on the surface in meteoritic form, so I expect that this may get used even earlier than vegetable fiber.

The material - cellulose nanofibers for lighter mass automobile parts, can you say carbon composites.. as that is what you will be doing at the nano level is just arrange the carbon.

As for a mars building substitue for steel energy costs versus that to which can grow under a dome or underground with less energy being created for the outcome yes wood products can be of better value.
