Re: Politics

Unless these Russian oil tankers involved visited US or European ports, or were flagged in US or European countries, I think this notion that Russian citizens are obligated to follow US law is the very reason why our law states that it doesn't apply to foreign nationals in foreign countries.  That was specifically done by The Founders to avoid pointless wars that European colonial powers were engaged in when America was founded.  Smuggling implies it was illegal for these tankers, presumably Russian owned or flagged, to carry crude oil from Venezuela to Russia or vice versa.  Without more information, that is a highly dubious claim.  In the same way that the US is allowed to engage in global commerce, war or no war, so is Russia.  We complain about the lawless behavior of the Putin regime while we engage in more of the same, but think it's okay when we do it.  Maybe that works when your opponent doesn't have nuclear weapons.  Otherwise, it's another case of the Biden Administration playing stupid games while the American people win stupid prizes.

‘Like you’re in a horror movie’: pollution leaves New Zealand wetlands irreversibly damaged
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/ … ly-damaged

As New Zealand struggles to make meaningful improvements to its polluted waterways, ecologists say some bodies of water in the region are reaching - or may have already passed - tipping points from which they may never bounce back. The summer botulism outbreak came in the wake of mass die-offs of fish a few weeks earlier, Klee says, after flooding had sent heavily polluted water channelling through to the wetlands. Waikare is ranked as one of the most polluted lakes in the world, and its waters channelled into wetlands including Whangamarino every time there was a storm.

A United Nations human rights monitoring group has denounced both Russia and Ukraine for having executed prisoners of war amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine released a report on Friday based on interviews with 432 people, including Russian and Ukrainian POWs and their relatives. The mission says it documented summary executions of 15 POWs by the Russian side and those of up to 25 POWs and others by Ukrainian forces.

In November 2014, a ΔΚΕ colony in Edinburgh, since closed, had the minutes leaked from a meeting in March 2014 by the University of Edinburgh student newspaper, The Student. The minutes allegedly made reference to comments that joked about rape, sexual harassment, transphobia and hazing. The story gained traction in both national and international media, being picked up by The Independent, The Huffington Post, and Time magazine. In January 2011, the ΔΚΕ chapter at the University of Alberta had its student group status suspended for five years after a hazing video surfaced of pledges being confined in a plywood box, forced to eat vomit, and deprived of sleep, by other fraternity members.

The name of this Brotherhood Fraternity popped up again in media during the Kavanaugh hearings, Christine Blasey Ford accused Brett Kavanaugh but nothing was found.

Putin prepares Russia for ‘forever war’ with the West as Ukraine invasion stalls
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/ … ion-stalls

Over a year into an invasion that, according to Russian planning, was supposed to take weeks, Vladimir Putin's government is putting society on a war footing with the west and digging in for a multiyear conflict. "Many in the country have now fully accepted that this war will not go away and believe that they need to learn to live under the reality," said Andrei Kolesnikov, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment who has studied public attitudes towards the war since its beginning. Konstantin Malofeev, a conservative oligarch who was sanctioned by the US in 2014 for "Threatening Ukraine and providing financial support to the Donetsk separatist region," said: "We have not seen such hatred since after Russian soldiers ended the war with the victory in Berlin. We stopped that war and now we, the victors, are once again facing the fact that it has risen up from hell against us."

Re: Politics

Healthy enough fertility at my church I'd say. Plenty of third and fourth children around.

I should have been a middle child, but my father denied my mother's desire for a third. Sniff. Had this been the Ender's game Earth, they would have been granted permission for a Third.

Historically about 20% of women in Britain never had children. That doesn't matter if there are plenty of third and fourth children. And many women desire to have third and fourth children; a large part of the fertility collapse comes from various factors discouraging them, such as unaffordability of homes (Mansard roofs! Add an extra floor to our pokey 2-up 2-downs.). Also perhaps car sizes, the associate pastor at church has a seven seater (four kids), but they're the only ones I know who have a car that big.

Terraformer: as Elon Musk points out, low income couples have lots of children. The higher the income, the fewer children they have. So affordability is not the issue.

Re: Politics

Lower income couples tend to have higher time preference. They don't think so much about whether or not they can afford children. Usually the tab then gets picked up by the state.

After a certain point as you go up the income scale, fertility rises again. People on six figures have more children than the middle middle class do.

Re: Politics

This is the sort of lunacy that the far left are trying to advance in Britain.  Employees can sue an employer if they overhear customers talking about something that hurts their feelings.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=G2BIIOkqybU

The far left are destructive fanatics.  There are two types of far left fanatic, the true believer who is mentally ill and the pernicious immigrant kind, who wants to undermine and destroy the native culture.  It is time that we stopped treating the far left as valid participants in the democratic system and recognise them as vandals who are out to bring the system down.  The political right treat the democratic system as something with inherent virtue, the sacred right of an individual to choose his own governors.  But to the left, democracy is simply a means to an end, a vehicle to be used to impose their own brand of tyranny.  We need to recognise left wing thinking as mental illness.  Idealism of any kind is a symptom of an inability to cope with the real world.  And it always leads to tyranny, as fanatics attempt to force society into a simplistic ideological straight jacket.  It leads to a society where people are punished for what they say and think, where problems are turned into political campaigns innthe way global warming was used to push uneconomic forms of energy.  In Britain, things are worse because government is not constrained by any constitution.  You can go to prison for simply saying the wrong thing.

Re: Politics

Calliban: What happened to the Magna Carta? I understand it's still valid.
Wikipedia: Constitution of the United Kingdom

The constitution of the United Kingdom or British constitution comprises the written and unwritten arrangements that establish the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland as a political body. Unlike in most countries, no attempt has been made to codify such arrangements into a single document, thus it is known as an uncodified constitution. This enables the constitution to be easily changed as no provisions are formally entrenched; the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom recognises that there are constitutional principles, including parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law, democracy, and upholding international law.

The Supreme Court also recognises that some Acts of Parliament have special constitutional status, and are therefore part of the constitution. These include Magna Carta, which in 1215 required the King to call a "common counsel" (now called Parliament) to represent people, to hold courts in a fixed place, to guarantee fair trials, to guarantee free movement of people, to free the church from the state, and to guarantee rights of "common" people to use the land. (Most of Magna Carta is no longer in force; those principles it established that still exist are mostly protected by other enactments.) After the Wars of the Three Kingdoms and the Glorious Revolution, the Bill of Rights 1689 and the Claim of Right Act 1689 cemented Parliament's position as the supreme law-making body, and said that the "election of members of Parliament ought to be free".

The Treaty of Union in 1706, followed by the Acts of Union 1707 (one by each national parliament) unified the Kingdoms of England (which incorporated Wales) and Scotland. Ireland joined in a similar way through the Acts of Union 1801. The Irish Free State separated after the 1921 Anglo-Irish Treaty took effect in 1922. Northern Ireland remained within the union.

Here in Canada, we do have a Constitution. It was known as "The "British North America Act, 1867" until the Constitution was "patriated" in 1982. In reality the name of that document was changed to "Constitution of Canada Act, 1867" when it came into force on July 1, 1867. However, most people still called it the "British North America Act" until 1982. The amendment of 1982 was a major one, changing how future amendments are made as well as embedding the "Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms" into the Constitution. There were amendments to the Constitution between 1867 and 1982, but every attempt to amend the Constitution since then has been rejected. The new amendment formula includes a referendum, so citizens themselves vote whether to approve the amendment. So far the citizens have rejected every attempt by politicians to embed their special interests into the Constitution. But the reason I mention Canada's Constitution is that this document is not the only part of Canada's Constitution. There is also the "Letters Patent Constituting the Office of Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada". This was last amended in 1947, and is considered part of the Constitution. This lays out the authority of Governor General. Although the Letters Patent is considered part of the Constitution, the amending formula does not apply to it. The King can change the Letters Patent any time he wants, to be anything he wants. If he were to do so it would be a major political issue, but he does have that authority. My understanding is that the Constitution of the UK consists of more than 2 documents, but at least there is one.

Relations between North Korea (DPRK) and the United States have been historically tense and hostile. The two countries have no formal diplomatic relations. Instead, they have adopted an indirect diplomatic arrangement using neutral intermediaries. The Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang is the US protecting power and provides limited consular services to U.S. citizens. The DPRK does not have an embassy in Washington, DC, but is represented in the United States through its mission to the United Nations in New York.

A parking attendant who confronted a car robber was shot four times.  He restled the gun off of the assailant and returned fire.  He woke up to find himself chained to his hospital bed for illiegal possession of a firearm.  The very same firearm that he removed from his assailant after being shot and then used to defend himself.  The armed robber was released without charge following hospital treatment.  Presumably, he went back to robbing cars.  The far left seem to delight in punishing the innocent out of spite.  They appear to be deeply unpleasant people.
