How will Mars be governed if Mars One suceeds?

How will Mars be governed? What set of rules will they use? Who should make the constitution? I think I have a few ideas.... Some of you may hate them...

1) Base it off a current constitution. Such as America! (Although if we get into this enough the republicans and democrats would spend more on debating then a mission to Mars would cost)

2) Have the leaders of the missions and chapters to construct a constitution then Mars Society Members to vote on it. Leaders of this could be Bas Lansdorp from Mars One, Robert Zubrin from Mars Society, Elon Musk from SpaceX, (for the dragon and sending the stuff there) Possibly some of the other leaders of Mars related societies Like Frank from Marsdrive

3) See how it governs itself!

Any other ideas? Post! Also, who says anyone is going to listen to it?

Let Mars govern itself? Anything the Mars Society makes will be deleted by the actual settlers, unless TMS actual settles Mars (very unlikely).

Though, a pan-Mars organisation would be helpful, to stop settlements on future sea beds so that we can terraform, for example...

That is true, if a company or nation settles mars then that constitution will be deleted, but what if Mars One succeeds? What rules would they have? Perhaps they would accept a fair constitution from Mars Society/ or have option 2 just delete the voting.

There really should be a Mars organisation in the future so people don't end up in the bottom of the ocean...

Re: How will Mars be governed if Mars One suceeds?

Americans are so hung up on written constitutions, which are not the primary way in which any society manages its affairs including the USA.  Governmental structure, custom, tradition and culture determine what really happens.  A written constitution may have an influence, may act as a temporary block to culturally mandated changes, may provide a partial shield for some minorities, but not much else.

Consider how the US Constitution has been molded over only 223 years in ways the writers of that Constitution could never have imagined:  abortion, gay rights, insurance regulation (really?  insurance isn't commerce?), free speech, and hundreds of other areas of life.

Consider how very liberal constitutions in other countries are and have been ignored.  Try reading the Constitution of the former Soviet Union, Mexico or Burma.

Consider how well countries do without written constitutions: Great Britain and Canada.

Don't get hung up on written constitutions not even written by the people who will live under them.  They will be ignored and considered with disdain by the people who experience the actual situation.  How could you even imagine writing a constitution for Song era China?  Knowing nothing about the people, conditions, traditions, customs, etc?  Same with Mars of the future.
