As the title put it we have heard of the issue of shuttle ending flights and the gap before Orion flights start.
This has been a tough issue for Nasa and for congress.
I believe Nasa did make a plee for some company to set up shop and I think another has but with the many thousand that will be out of work that are in no way close to retirement what can be done.
Following on a recent proposal from Space Florida on behalf of the state of Florida, today, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) and Sen. Mel Martinez (R), along with 18 additional members of the Florida congressional delegation, sent a letter to Orbital Sciences Corporation urging them to locate their facilities for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Project at Cape Canaveral in Florida.

As much as some want business to relocate the chances are thou that workers will find work in the area or move out.
Space Workers To Receive Help Finding Jobs
NASA and the Brevard Workforce Development Board signed an agreement on Tuesday to help Kennedy Space Center workers find new jobs after the space shuttle program ends in 2010.
The goal of the Space Act Agreement will be to prepare both federal and contract shuttle employees to work on NASA's next-generation space vehicles or find new employment outside the space program
So what is the level of head that will be effected by the shutting down of the shuttles use?
The number of people working on the shuttles and new rockets and spaceships at KSC could fall from about 8,000 to as few as 1,600 by 2011, the year after the last shuttle mission, according to a recent NASA preliminary job forecast.
Current impact numbers?
A report last year by Brevard County officials estimated about 3,000 shuttle workers could be retrained for work on other NASA programs and predicted a total net job loss post-shuttle of about 3,500.

Employ them not by using absurd numbers for a handful of launches, but by prepping and assembling many launches.

Ya the way Nasa and the contractors do business is crap but within that frame work what needs to be changed and how can we change what is?
NASA-Brevard Workforce agreement will help workers find post-shuttle careers and new jobs when the shuttle fleet retires in just two years.
Called the Space Act Agreement, it cuts through the bureaucracy and makes it much easier for NASA, its contractors and subcontractors and the workforce board to act together to steer workers through the extremely tough transition.
A transition that will see an estimated 6,400 KSC workers lose their jobs, not to mention the thousands of other support-services workers who will also fall by the wayside throughout our community.
The cost to Florida's economy is high and not oly could be devastating but will be considering that NASA spends about $1.5 billion a year into the Space Coast's economy.
