Re: Staging posts

IN order to avoid the cost and mass of building and transferring to Mars huge exploratory vehicles, might another approach be adopted.

I'm thinking of a dual approach:

1. Electric trikes for mobility and substantial carrying ability (they will have a large boot or pull a substantial trailer).

2.  Staging posts every few kms where there will be air supplies, food and solar power/batteries plus inflatable "igloos" dug into trenches.

Advantages: probably lower mass. If something goes wrong with the transport people can still walk back.  Ability to gradually extend area of exploration over a wide area.

Re: Staging posts

Alternatively still send an enormous ship that breaks into dozens of small cache habs that enter and land independently.
