Any ideas? I've heard extracting the core/mixing it with the rest would do.

it might or might not, because the core is the only thing currently hot enough to support fusion. But it would restart, by nature of the sun's size. Bu the helium would just fall back towards the center because it's heavier than the hydrogen. Maybe by removing the core completely, but slowly.
