Been really busy lately, and Rxke wants the slack let up. SpaceNut, you still around? Who else? I can think of a few more.

I'm happy to delete spammers if you like.

Yeah, was going to add you actually, love the stuff you're doing on the wiki. I feel bad for not being around lately. Added.
I'd add RobertDyck and GCRNRevenger (since they're here a lot), but I think they'd be deleting each others posts or something!

K, I added a few more people who have earned my trust. If you see that you've become a moderator, the privledge is only for deleting spam (and maybe moving topics here and there), okay?
Weilding it to get rid of uncivlized behavior won't hurt, though, use your discretion. And don't take this as added responsibility, if I had my way we'd all be moderators, but I can't mess up NewMars on an experiment like that. It's cool, no big thing to worry about.

Thanks, I love the wiki format. One day I'll be able to settle interminable arguments with a reference to a wiki page - but humans will probably set foot on Mars first.

I went on walkabout for six months (which I thoroughly recommend, by the way), so I'm not really one to judge

Nonsense, they are both perfect gentlemen and should be co-opted immediately.

Yup still here, just got the email seeing the change and reading though the threads just now.
I guess that said I will just have to learn how these things are done, as the need presents...

Wohoo, a whole new batch of moderators!
/goes off to nap
I requested this to Josh, because I felt I wasn't around enough some days to eradicate spammers.
Some discussions are semi-heated, but for now people tend to be quite civil about their disagreements, so no real need to swing the ban/delete/modify hammer... IMHO...

BTW: how I report spammers:
If you see a spammer posting stuff, go to its 'profile' (click the button saying profile, that is...)
copy the url, ending on the id, something like 1648-ish...
then delete the topic ('x' button
then got to meta new mars, topic 'spammer', and paste the url so Josh can then got of on a rampage

You shouldn't delete posts with spam. Instead, create a subforum which only moderators can see, and move spam posts there. This is how mods do it on another forum where I am a member. The advantage is that the post stays to be analysed etc.

Hey, wait a minute !!!! I'm a moderator too ?!?!?!?! Wow, thank you.
Offline
Uhmmm, looking around, I saw there is no administrative subforum (only mods can view and post there). Josh, do you think this would be a good idea ?
Offline
Regarding an administrative subforum. It was never implemented because some posters here would've had a problem with knowing of such an "elite council" of things. But I think it can be arranged, definitely makes sense.

We already have meta...

Keeping new mars as open as possible is the best way. As Rxke says meta is here and discussions between moderators should as far as possibe be public, especailly when deciding to remove or censor posts.

I don't pay attention and I get drafted.
This has all the glamour of jury duty.
And Josh, if and when you read this, send me your info- I haven't forgotten, just been busy with RL and impending matrimony.

:? my 'we already have 'meta' was in reply to another post that seems to have vanished?
I don't recall from whom, but it asked for a moderator section that was open, so I didn't see the need for yet another meta-ish section.
A 'secret' section could have its merits for discussing spammers, but I'm not too sure about the neccesity of such a thing, some P.M.s would suffice, I'd recon...
Solving disputes likewise... It's not space.com's cesspool we're moderating

Is there a function to move articles to another topic?
For example, this article would be better placed here
Meanwhile locking the topic seemed a good idea.

yes, on the bottom of the page you see some icons, the second one is an arrow, that starts the 'move' topics to other sections dialogue (tip: keep ghost of original, otherwise people think their stuff has been deleted, now it just says: "moved: topix xyz...."
I'll leave the actual moving to you.

doubletake...
I misinterpreted your question, answer is probably 'no'

I think there is an addon to phpBB that allows mods to do that. I don't remember more...
