Rxke is right. Every two years Mars approaches near Earth. And magically, near the 26th of August, it is at its closest. 
My birthday is August 26th. Go figure.
But it only appears brighter (like a small red dot), nothing like the Moon.

The August 26th 2003 was a BIG red dot, though... Easily visible in a city, even.
Nearly got caught howling at it, one night!
