Anyone catch the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) news conference ?
http://www.spaceref.com/news/viewpr.html?pid=17411
I think they've mentioned something about Mars Telecommunication Orbiter project getting shut down.
MTO was going to be a big mission, perhaps pave the way for elecemnts in the Bush mission such as unmanned craft and manned flights. MTO would have relayed communications from other Mars probes to Earth.

The JPL web page say its still go !!
is the mission ok :?:
here's another thread on it

Where are you getting that they cancelled it? I don't see it on that page. I certainly hope not. We definitely need a telecommunications satellite at Mars!
Some useful links while MER are active. The amount of solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth totals some 3.9 million exajoules a year.

There was a bit of video and text on a bit of the MRO news briefing.
The page can be a bit funny, maybe server trouble from them but I think you might catch it at NASA's website
The past JPL missions with Rovers are doing great but it's hard to understand NASA double speak I got the impression that MTO was cancelled. They made an idea about try to make an effort of getting future pictures and info back without a Mars Telecommunication Orbiter and it seemed the project would be chopped down.
?
the talk was on the 21st of July

*Hi YL Rocket. I haven't heard nor seen any news to the effect of this being canceled. Hopefully it has not.

You did hear correctly: Report: NASA cancels Mars telecom orbiter mission

This is probably one reason for why the MTO has been cancelled at this point and hopefully it will be revived in time for manned missions to mars.
Longest laser link bridges the gulf of space
A laser communication link has been made across a record 24 million kilometres (15 million miles), between the Messenger spacecraft and instruments on Earth.
The craft and the ground station transmitted pulses back and forth to each other, and although no actual information was transmitted, the experiment shows the potential for interplanetary laser links.

Will there be another MTO soon ?

Will there be another MTO soon ?
No.

Not exactly laser but the issue is that we will not be able to communicate for a month as the alignment of earth and mars are at opposition with the sun in the middle of us.
For moratorium on sending commands to Mars, blame the Sun
NASA will refrain from sending commands to America's three Mars orbiters and two Mars rovers during the period from July 22 to Aug. 1.
This will be the eighth solar conjunction period for the Mars Odyssey orbiter, the seventh for the Opportunity rover, the sixth for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, the third for the Curiosity rover and the second for the MAVEN orbiter.
Sure not a problem for robotic missions but it could be a real problem for men...

Not a problem if the nasa peeple actually extend their vision beyond-the-box.
This is my most favorite webpage ---> http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/wsa-e … prediction
The Enlil Solar Wind Predictor.
Note that Stereo A & B Satellites are always communicating.
So, plan the MTOs near these positions and never lose sight of data.
...it merely takes longer on the round trip.

Yes but they need to be of the repeater type for data.

It's the "position" I was on about, kind sir.
That should've been obvious.

yes was for the positional aspects of being trojan path leading and following earth's orbit.
So a a hugh batch of cube satelites would also work and they are cheap....just spread them out.....
But it comes back to whom needs to be the investor....
