Re: Nuclear-thermal airplanes on Titan

On Earth this old ( 1950es) idea was considered useless because the radiation shielding is too heavy to allow any payload, but Titan`s atmosphere is >4 times denser than ours ( 1.5 bars in ~100K) and the gravity is 7 times lower, hence the dynamical lifting force will be slightly less than 30 times bigger than on Earth. Even vertical take off and landing is possible. Such titan-plane could be very big and to  deliver from and back to titan`s orbit manned modul and to fly arround the whole moon, studying it for several weeks and than to get back the crew to the interplanetary vehicle waiting in Titan or even close to it Saturn orbit.
