I know that planets have been detected orbiting around pulsars and I wonder if aliens could exist there. I know that extremophiles have been detected on places that were once thought to be inhospitable to life. Could they exist on planets that orbit stars that emit bursts of radiation every two seconds?

What about life based on silicon, instead of carbon? Lower energy, for sure - but they'll be in a high energy environment.
