Re: China eyeing new HL - Agency Expecting approval this year

Ah, but this ime it would get a colony set up which would keep the exploration going.

It's like, you need to run to the bus, but once you get there you can stop running but carry on moving.

And... 98% reliability... Is that considered man-rated internationally?
It would not be considered man-rated by current US standards, but the risk would be considered acceptable for the Chinese.

It must be close. How reliable is the shuttle?

1 - 2/120 = 98.3%

Seems to be acceptable for the Americans too.

No, it's unacceptable. That's why the Shuttle is being retired and will be replaced by launcher ten times safer.

Sure hasn't stopped the most recent missions. They sure are accepting the risk.

Re: China eyeing new HL - Agency Expecting approval this year

Human space flight has always involved a lot of risk. If that level of was unacceptable, nobody would fly. Note that Soyuz has about the same historic risk per flight. NASA puts an enormous amount of care and preparation into each Shuttle flight, that's why it's so expensive ... about $1 billion per launch. And that's another reason why it needs to be replaced.

Right, that's what I was saying. That 98% was acceptable.

It is about the only way to build beyond the tinker toy designs of the past.
Its not like they can not copy a design from images of it.

Re: China eyeing new HL - Agency Expecting approval this year

Chang'e 5, the next mission in China's lunar exploration program, will demonstrate and test the country's technological and engineering capabilities in space, according to a key figure in the project.
http://www.ecns.cn/news/2020-09-22/deta … 1957.shtml
Yu Dengyun, deputy chief designer of China's lunar exploration program, said on Sunday that Chang'e 5 will be launched by a Long March 5 heavy-lift carrier rocket at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province by the end of 2020.

The 8.2-metric-ton robotic probe has four components-an orbiter, lander, ascender and re-entry module. After the probe reaches lunar orbit, the components will separate into two parts, with the orbiter and re-entry module remaining in orbit while the lander and ascender descend to the lunar surface.
