Re: Beamed Energy Propulsion - 3rd International Symposium

I'd like to get some info about the prospects for surface-to-orbit light craft from somewhere. Potential payloads and stuff. Unfortunately, I haven't found much when browsing the web for some reason.

Always liked the cleanliness of this concept and the way that small toy sized prototype looks and shines. Explicitly futuristic! smile

Look at the bottom of the page :

Jordin Kare: Modular Laser Launch Architecture: Analysis and Beam Module Design

The PDF has ~1.3MB

Re: Beamed Energy Propulsion - 3rd International Symposium

IIRC there was a scientific American or new scientist dedicated once to an oversight of new space travel tech, with some interviews, and otlines for scale-up plans... Basis idea was some kind of disk in space, with an array of microwave-beames, as '1st stage' capable of 'pulling-up' small lighcraft that would eventually build bigger powestations.

Interesting, Rxke. I'll go and see whether Scientific American keeps any substantial web presence.

mboeller, thanks for the link. It actually contained lots of data. Seems we are along way from designing a beam that can carry more than a 100 kg to orbit, though.
