Re: Mars by 2020 - Mars by 2020 is becoming a reality

Since the new 2003 NASA buget was unveiled, it looks like we will have a human mission to Mars in 2020. It is a great buget. More money going to Mars research and nuclear propulsion although it cancled the Pluto and Europa missions.

Really?!! I haven't seen any details of this new budget.
It sounds too good to be true! ... It is true, though, is it? Can you tell us more?

Re: Mars by 2020 - Mars by 2020 is becoming a reality

I looked in a couple of places, but I couldn't find anything about this...

Here's a page of NASAs budget:
http://www.nasa.gov/budget/budget_index.html
Here's all I could find about NASAs current budget:
http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7....d27.pdf

No mention of Mars in 2020.

Some useful links while MER are active. The amount of solar radiation reaching the surface of the earth totals some 3.9 million exajoules a year.

I know it doesn't mention Mars by 2020, but with buget's like that we should beable to make that deadline.

Here's another update on future NASA plans:

space.com NASA Budget news

It's a bit disappointing on the Mars front unfortunately but I'm not sure how things will pan out. Maybe if the rovers find anything interesting next year things may change. ???

Re: Mars by 2020 - Mars by 2020 is becoming a reality

I' not optimistic about going to Mars by 2020. Although the extra $1 billion and the money for space nuclear power is great, Mars Sample Return has been delayed indefinitely. Until we accomplish MSR, we cannot begin to plan for a manned mission to Mars.

Hopefully more logical heads will prevail. MSR by 2011!
