Re: Sex on martian trip (serious) - NASA thinks about libido-lowering

I read somewhere NASA is thinking about a drug that lowers the sexual urge. Sexual urge is considerred as a real problem by some scientists. The biggest problem should be jealouzy (right writing of this word ??? ).

They write also in the article about Svetlana Savitskaya who has made love in space, but they consider it as not right. However, I'm sure it's right, because some member of the MS who visited the Russians met the male cosmonaut that was involved. (Alexandr Serebrov). But officially, nothing has happened.

May choice is 'sex should be forbidden'' sad , but I'm not sure. I'm not sure if it's a real problem. Psychologically, the problem of jealouzy makes sense.

Drugs: Don't think it's a good idea, it has of course side-effects. And what when thes drugs are refused? Beside that I think it's not ethical.

Only women, men or married couples: Not practical to narrow your selection criteria.

Re: Sex on martian trip (serious) - NASA thinks about libido-lowering

In my mind it's a toss-up between married couples only and selecting people who are OK with casual sex.

Forbidding sex is a bad idea.  If they want to have sex, they will.  If it is forbidden, then they will hide it.  If it isn't forbidden then they will be able to talk through any jealousy problems or anything else that comes up.

Honesty and openness is the best policy.

If you don't want personal conflict, don't send people.  Castration might provide a slight mass savings over the use of Depo Provera, but it will not eliminate personal conflict.   :realllymad:

How does only sending males help???

I voted for married couples, but then I also vote for one way trips.

You could send them one at a time... but....

ANYWAY... Nasa is totally control freaked out. They treat Astronauts like advanced rovers instead of adventurers. NASA would send Androids if they had them. They just do not like humans... they're to messy.

Think what would happen to a love triange, compete with jealous rage, 30 million miles from Earth.

The astronauts would behave like the responsible adults they are and deal with it.

Re: Sex on martian trip (serious) - NASA thinks about libido-lowering

Not just love triangles; consider what sort of atmosphere a Mars expedition would have if two people fell in love, then broke up, and were stuck in the same habitat with each other for the next year. Or consider the problems of favoritism. As some of oyu may know, I dealt with some of these issues in my novel The Mars Frontier, http://rsmd.net/MarsFrontier]http://rsm … sFrontier/ .

But I don't think it makes sense to try to eliminate sex. It can't really be eliminated, I think.

Can't be eliminated, it's the nature of the beast.

Also, sex can be a healthy way to relieve stress, ask any self-respecting bonobo (heh)

Seriously, forcefully forbidding it outright is asking for troubles: secrecy, guilt-feelings, cover-ups, lying about stuff... Even more stres... i can easily imagine how *those* things could bring a mission in danger, more than sex...

The astronauts would have to cohabit, an Earth, before the mission to Mars. After several years of rotating sex partners, the sexual related stresses would be worked out. I can just see it as a theme for a new TV show.

Let's see...

Is NASA just going to select a few random people out of a crowd to go to Mars?  No, these explorers will be the most highly professional people on the planet.  They will know full well that sex will be an issue ahead of time.  They will have worked out ways to deal with every psychological stress imaginable, including love triangles and break-ups.

Let's see...how does that song go?

Don't worry...Be happy!   :band:

The women will want to sleep with the top dog. As in a wolf pack, the social pecking order needs to be firmly established. Better to resolve status on Earth, so a cohesive tribe can be established; Say in a one year submarine trip.

Was it captured on a web cam ?

When maintenance and operation duty shifts are over, there's got to be gardening and sex available to keep us emotionally and physically fit. Why else would we be going to all that trouble to get to Mars, except to procreate? The intellectual stimulation won't last the trip without it. Wake up and smell the flowers on the way there..

And this is why we haven't got to Mars yet...

Send religious types. Not the Nominal ones the really freaky ones. The ones who sign up to go one way without supplies.

Re: Sex on martian trip (serious) - NASA thinks about libido-lowering

I once heard of a questionnaire given to air travellers, regarding the make up of the flight crew on commercial flights.
The majority opinion was that you could have an all-male crew or you could have one female and the rest male. But most people didn't want to fly in a plane with two or more females on the flight deck.
    Go figure!

Why is that? That's bizarre. That questionaire must've been rigged. tongue

I almost voted for the "all female" option, but I'd want to go. big_smile

But really, I think the votes here are sensible, the majority things that banning sex isn't very conductive, and yeah, I really can't see how it could be. Married couples only doesn't guarantee anything. So you're just better off throwing the dice and seeing which end is up. Ahem.

Re: Sex on martian trip (serious) - NASA thinks about libido-lowering

Maybe we're going about this all wrong. If humans are too unstable to handle the pressure, let's just send bigass colony ships with hundreds of people right now. Redundant members of the crew, plenty of room in big habs, easy to avoid people you have issues with and the ability to absorb a murder or two.

Or we could just accept that astronauts are intelligent, reasonable sentient beings capable of making reasoned decisions... and let them.

Besides, we're talking about a trip of several months and zero gravity. It's gonna happen. Frequently.

Send cross dressing transexual eunches. Dibs on the pink EVA suit. I think I'll put rhinestones on the outside of my visor too.

Why should abstention for six months be such a problem, considering it seems to work flawlessly for so many people on Earth?
Don't send married couples, send young geeks without girl friends and who wouldn't get anyone for 2½ years anyway.

The problem I think is real. A pregnancy during the first flights needs to be avoided. The health issues would be a serious obstacle in the first flights. Certainly children will be born in space at some point but lets not rush and complicate things without need.

Maybe... Initial Nasa stuff is showing thing concieved in zero-g have huge developmental issues.

Apparently a lot of zygotes have sort of gravitropic developmental operons or something.

In the RGB triology nearly everybody had become close friends with nearly everybody before they even left LEO. Go the free-love.
