Re: Russia: Mars Lander & Probos Rover/Sample Return - Russia Plans Two New Missions to Mars

Moscow (UPI) Jun 20, 2005
Russian space officials said Monday they are preparing two unmanned missions to Mars before 2015.

Georgy Polischuk, director general and designer general of the Lavochkin production and science association, was quoted by the Interfax-AVN news agency as saying the first mission is scheduled for October 2009.

A research craft will orbit Mars, and then a rover will be dropped on the surface of Phobos - one of the tiny twin Martian moons, to collect soil samples to return to Earth.

"The spacecraft will work on Phobos for three years," Polischuk said.

The second mission is intended to land on Mars to conduct various experiments, he added.

"The exact date for (the second) mission has not been set, but it is planned for 2015 at the latest," Polischuk said.

Both missions have been included in Russia's space plan for 2006-2015, he said.

Best of luck to them. I doubt we'll hear about this again for a few years though.

"Yes, I was going to give this astronaut selection my best shot, I was determined when the NASA proctologist looked up my ass, he would see pipes so dazzling he would ask the nurse to get his sunglasses."

Clipper to Mars? Euros thinking about support ?

Russia places bets on future spaceship
Clipper envisioned for deep-space trips, but Europe puts support on hold

The winged crew vehicle — known as the Clipper, or Kliper — would launch atop a Russian Soyuz 2-3 booster and could form the heart of potential moon- or Mars-bound craft, according to RSC-Energia designs. Separate cargo pods could also launch atop a separate Soyuz rocket. Both the Clipper vehicle and cargo pods would be towed to the space station.

Russia begins ambitious 10-year space program to regain former glory
10-year civil exploration program will also include development of the Angara family of rockets and new modifications to the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle. Russia’s own interplanetary mission is also planned. This would send a probe to a Mars satellite to collect samples.

Russia's achievements in space such as the MIR space station and Yuri Gagarin's space flight in 1961, the world first manned mission, remain sources of national pride. The new plan is an attempt to bring the Russian space agency, Roskosmos, back to full operation. The agency has suffered severe funding problems since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia's Federal Space Agency spokesman Vyacheslav Davidenko told media on Dec. 7 that India has invited Russia to participate into India's moon probe program.

The six-person Clipper is designed to replace Russia's three-person Soyuz capsule, which has been in operation since the 1960s and is currently the only reliable transport to the International Space Station. Lighter than NASA's shuttle and more powerful than the Soyuz, the Clipper will be more than just a taxi to the ISS. Notes ESA official Manuel Valls, "It could go to the moon."

The Russian Federal Space Agency showed off a full-scale mock-up of the craft at the Moscow International Air Show in August. If all goes well-that is, if ESA ponies up funding-design studies of the Clipper could begin in early 2006.

The country's Clipper project to develop a six-person spacecraft to deliver astronauts into Earth orbit, and potentially beyond, appears in some ways to be the Russian Federal Space Agency's answer to NASA's Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV).
