Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

How many people on this forum would be interested in a New Mars Seti@Home team?  I am sitting aroun 600 work units, so no that many.. I get about 50-60 done a week.

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

I have seti monitor and I would like to know what it means when I have a long green line stiking up above all the other lines. I keep recognizing the patterns of radio frequency interference on my setiathome client. What can be done to clear up the radio frequency interference? Does anyone have a software program that can do that?

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

goto Seti at Home and download the applicable program.
the graphical is kinda neat but takes between 5-10 times longer to process work-units.  All you do is download it and place it in a directory, then run it.  I run the Command Line on my laptop and desktop.  Laptop can get them in occasionally under 4 hours, desktop under 3 hours per work-unit.

Seth, do you have this team created already?  I started back in April and I have at least 440 WUs.

Seti@Home New Mars team

Above is the link to the New Mars Team I created.  I will change any the texts, with suggestions from a forum member, and also will try to put news updates.  If installed properly, the Command Line Seti@home runs almost unnoticable on most newer machines.

http://wcarchive.cdrom.com/pub/setiatho … ]Seti@home command line client

Save it into it's own directory then either put an icon on your desktop or link in your startup menu.  how it works, is it uses about 15-20 Megabytes of Ram and runs as a background service.  This way it is very low priority, so it basicly used the processing power not taken up by programs currently in use. I sometimes run multiple instances on my desktop, by copying the exe into another directory.  It slows the overall time down by 15 to twenty minutes, but you get more workunits done.

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

If it just slows the processing time down, then I don't need it. What I am looking for is a program that would seperate earth based radio frequency interference from interstellar radio noise and still be able to recognize et's signal.

The Command line actually runs significantly faster then the GUI interface.  Due to selectivity, I highly doubt you will recieve any earth-based signals.

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

I tried the new setiathome client, but it wouldn't show me how much data had been analized and it looks like it's frozen when it's analizing data. I won't know when it's almost done or not. I don't think that I will use it much. Are there any more programs like that but more advanced technically?

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

There is add-on software for the Command line that can show graphical information.  The whole advantage to the Command Line is the fact that since it's not graphical it goes faster.  There is a status line you can turn on that says what it's doing, if you load a shortcut with advanced setups or make a batch file.

Kick ass..  If we get 10 - 15 people we could get a decent group going.  I should be at 1000 work units by November.  I have two accounts.  One was a speed account.  Can show the difference of the Command Line program.

You could try http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegrou … lding@home if your not set on finding alien signals.  Thier program uses distributed computing to simulate the folding of protein molecules that could be put to medical and other uses.

Well.  I will keep the New Mars Seti@home Team Active for a few more weeks, but unless I get some more people who are also interested in Seti@home and want to join the team, I am probably going to go back to the Air Force Team

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

I enjoy Seti@Home, and Also, find it is a usable benchmark.  Seeing how fast I can crank out work-units.  I am deeply interested in Seti and Feel that if we do find a signal, it could be very important.  Along with that too, The more Seti@home users they have, and they may through in more search patters.  Right now it's very simple.   The movie Contact is misleading in that sense..

Very true.  People can't really waste their time sitting around listening to to the almost limitless bandwidths that *other* intelligent life would use.

Btw what if intelligent life uses a much higher bandwidth than we are searching for?

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

The bandwidth we are searching around is based off of a frequency given off by Hydrogen(correct me if I am off base please).  It is an assumption, but It's a calling card so to speak.  Realistically we can't search all the frequencys and upper UHF is far more efficient then SHF or EHF. there is also a cutoff in the 40-50 ghz range which does not penetrate the Ionosphere.  So..  It's a SWAG Scientific Wild Ass Guess.

Re: SETI@HOME->NEWMARS - Discussion - newmars seti@home team

I've heard of the possiblity that a gravitational wave telescope is going to be placed in earth orbit. Could that be used for seti for a little while to see if they find anything?

I don't think so.. it would imply communication via g-wave... not sure
