The Big Picture of Mars Settlement

This topic is offered by NewMars members who might be interested in taking a look at the entirety of the Mars settlement process.

This forum has encouraged thousands of posts by members who see part of the how the future might unfold.

We have members still with us who have contributed to the store of visions.

The folks who created this forum in the first place tried to think of how the forum might be organized to serve a membership of persons from all around the planet.  In recent times we have shrunk to a small core group.

A common characteristic of the small group remaining is the ability to see the Mars project in the context of human history, and that in the context of the evolution of the Solar System.

In August of 2026 on Earth, this forum has seen in-depth discussion of process to make food for humans without using agriculture.

While it is still early, these discussions seem to show encouraging signs that life away from Earth might be possible without the kinds of agriculture that evolved on Earth.

Social structures tried on Earth appear to me to have had mixed results.

It appears to me that selfishness and violence are potential behavior patterns that might occur in any human.

The ability to cooperate has proven key to human progress, but groups of humans appear to be prey to domination by individuals who have selfish behavior patterns.

Humans appear to have developed group responses to the deviations of individuals from "best practices" for the community.

As I look out over the landscape of Earth in 2026, I ** think ** I see signs of struggles between evil and good just about everywhere.

Human writers have been documenting these struggles for thousands of years.

One of our members has advocated a dictatorship as a practical structure for settlement of Mars.

Other members seem to prefer other options, but I don't see (or haven't seen) much in the way of practical solutions.

If members decide to contribute to this topic, I'd appreciate your spending some time thinking about your posts.

I think that the example of Antarctica shows that humans ** can ** contain their violent and selfish tendencies for a few years at a time, but the treaties that created the unique Antarctic experiment are about to expire, and there are rumors of some groups rubbing their hands in anticipation of the great treasures to be plundered when the treaty expires.
