SpaceNut... as of mid-July 2025, we have 3 pages of topics with "launch" in the title, but not one with the word calculator...
I asked Google to look for sites that offer an online launch Calculator, and it came back with multiple sites and offers for what appear to be programs that will run on a computer offline.
Because SSTO is a popular subject for forum members, I thought that it would be helpful if members could share a resource instead of talking past each other as is the norm.
I'll open this topic with Google's collection, and invite members to contribute posts with additional sites, or comments upon the ones already listed. The goal here is to find a tool that everyone can use at the same time, so we have some basis for arriving at a shared conclusion.
AI Overview
Yes, there are several online resources and software options for simulating rocket launches that can accommodate different fuels and materials. Here are some of the most promising options:Online Calculators and Simulators:
Launcher Calculator: This open-source orbital launch vehicle payload calculator by Launcher allows you to select from a range of existing rockets and potentially create a custom rocket. While its primary focus is payload capacity, the ability to choose different rockets suggests that
it incorporates varying performance characteristics based on fuel types and materials.Launch Vehicle Performance Calculator: This utility from Silverbird Astronautics provides an approximate calculation of launch vehicle payload performance. Its methodology considers factors that would be influenced by the type of fuel and materials used.
Flight Club's Yeet Calculator: This tool allows you to compare the payload capabilities of different launch vehicles, providing insights into performance based on varying characteristics that stem from different fuel and material choices.
Software Simulators:
BurnSim: This solid rocket internal ballistics simulation software allows you to input detailed information about propellant characteristics (fuel and oxidizer) and motor design to predict performance. This is ideal for those interested in solid-fueled rockets.Meco Rocket Simulator: This simulator, available on Steam, is validated against real-life engine data and allows you to adjust design parameters, including combustion properties, which change depending on the oxidizer-fuel ratio and pressure. This suggests it can accommodate different fuel types.
OpenRocket: While primarily focused on model rockets, OpenRocket is a free simulator that provides real-time performance data feedback as you design, including information influenced by materials and potential variations in propellant types.
Additional Resources:
Space Calc: This website offers a multi-stage rocket Delta-V optimizer and performance calculations, which can be useful when considering the impact of different fuels on overall rocket performance.Rocket Propulsion Analysis Software: Some users on Reddit recommend Rocket Propulsion Analysis (RPA) software for general liquid engine simulation.
In Summary:
The best resource for you will depend on the level of detail and type of rocket you are interested in. If you want a general overview of existing rockets and their performance, the online calculators like Launcher Calculator or Flight Club's Yeet Calculator may be suitable. If you are interested in designing and simulating solid rocket motors, BurnSim is a good option. For liquid rocket engines, consider Meco Rocket Simulator or more advanced RPA software. Remember that simulations are estimates, and for detailed mission planning, it's best to consult with launch service providers.Launch Vehicle Performance Calculator - Silverbird Astronautics
