*Okay, we've discussed sports on Mars, Marsian status symbols, nightlife on Mars, etc...

...what sorts of crazy contests do you think they'll dream up and participate in?  Sure, there'll be mimickry of stuff already done on Earth...but I mean *unique* to Mars, life in a colony, etc.

Can see colonists having fruit-pushing-with-your-nose contests down corridors, LOL!

But that's an Earth thing already (apparently, according to the article), so I'll try and think up some unique contests...

Sand castles. They would have contests to see who make sandcastles (different types, grandest, largest, tallest, etc).

You would be amazed at what they can do with a little extra water, some sand from an empty shore, and .3 earth gravity.  big_smile

big_smile  Excellent, Clark!

Just watch out for them pesky beach-vollley players nearby... Those keeds have no respect! big_smile

Hmmm... On a related note: beach-sailing? Don't know how you call that in English, it's a streamlined, boat/cano-like small car, with a large wind-surfer-esque sail, these things go fast!
They do races with these things on the wet strip at the beach during ebb, oh... Um.... Nevermind...

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

Why thank you Rxxe.  big_smile I wish I could take full credit, but the Martians tell me about this stuff all the time. They told me about another one...

They have a game, a contest if you will, which is similar to contests here on good ol' terra firma. It's Martian Storytelling.

The basic premise is simmilar to our earthly ones of campfire ghost stories of enterntainment, however, the stories don't have to be themetacially horror or fiction.

They hold contests on who can tell the most imaginative story of long dead Martian gods, long living myths, or Martian creation stories. Parables, horror, or pure flights of fancy are always entertaining. They all offer bits of entertainment during the long dusty storms of summer when the warming Martian winds shround the rock strewn plains in a living sea of sand and soot.

Of course, my favorite is the "Marble Tree of Silver Leaves"...  big_smile

Beer balloons: take a bottle of warm beer outside, tie an empty thin plastic balloon over the neck tightly, then shake the beer up and pop the top. The pressurized warm CO2 is warmer and thus less dense than the surrounding freezing C02 atmosphere, so it will float off (assuming you used a large enough balloon, otherwise it might pop in your face).

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

Two questions, what sort of beer, and can we have beer balloon races?

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

Why, crappy beer, of course. Why waste the good stuff? And I imagine drunken beer-balloon races would be a popular way to kill time in Martian bars.

Actually, if I were a marketing droid in a beer company on Mars, I'd put free balloons with logos on them in every six-pack. Why pass up free advertising?

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

Okay, i'm in, put me down for the first race. You can almost imagine the tension just before the first 'off'. Though I may have consider knobbling the competition

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

Now that I think of it, I wonder how many colonists will die each year because they're drunk and don't put their suit on right before going out.

Remember, friends don't let friends EVA drunk.

I think making beer and other liquors on mars will be quite the hobby. Mars, the planet of 300 microbreweries, lol.

Re: Wacky contests on Mars

I think that if we get to a stage that Mars has its own bar, we'll have got to the stage where we have a dedicated EVAer. Someone who ensures you have your suit on before you go outside, and makes sure you get to your destination.

Actually, I figure that they'll require you to stay in pressurized areas until you sober up. Throwing up in your suit won't win you any awards.

Surface temperature perhaps. Meaning on the ground, not the thin atmosphere above it.

How about space-hopper races. You could get some distance on those things with reduced gravity.
