Meeting follow up....
kbd512 cleared the last little hurdle ... we now have FluxBB 1.15.12 ready for use.
Thank you to GW Johnson, Void and SpaceNut for helping by logging and confirming that the new systems looks and feels like the old one.
The difference is beneath the covers.... ** all ** the underlying software has been brought forward 10 years plus, from 2012 to 2024.
We hope and expect that the Internal Server errors we had been seeing will not reoccur.
Here is our plan of action:
We encourage ** all ** active members to log into the new system: http://newmars.con/new/
You will have one week to catch any bugs that might exist.
On Sunday next week, at precisely NOON SpaceNut time (New Hampshire) we will close logins on the old system and begin conversion.
The conversion process itself should take only a couple of hours but we are blocking off the entire rest of Sunday.
You will see the change when you attempt to log in and a message appears to the effect that logins are disabled.
I'll investigate to see if we can improve the message.
In any case, when the new system is up we will enable logins there.
In thinking a bit further, I can (and will) create a new topic you can check when we are working.

Reminder to active members:
The forum we are using now will lock down at Noon New Hampshire time, so that conversion to the new system can begin.
Conversion will take a minimum of two hours, and once started it will take as long as needed.
You will see that conversion has begun when you cannot log in.
I have asked for help in changing the message that appears when the logins are disabled, but at this point that change is still pending.
Only a few people are active these days;
RobertDyck and Void are likely to want to log in tomorrow. Calliban and Terraformer are also possibles.
Oldfart1939, GW Johnson and RGClark drop by from time to time.
All are welcome to visit the new forum. It's been running without problems over the past week.
It may not be obvious, but it just occurred to me that the new forum will be offline as well as the old one.
The database will be copied over to the new forum. Confirmation procedures will happen. The pointer to the old forum will change to point to the new one.
After all is confirmed working, logins will be enabled.
The time of the change start would be 5 hours later for our European members, so 17:00 UTC.
Update: NewMars members will be able to check progress of the conversion in near real time:

I have created a topic for updates in the phpBB3 forum we created for evaluation. It still works.

Conversion starts in three minutes ... see phpBB3 site for updates
Update an hour and 20 minutes later ... kbd512 was unable to allocate time for the conversion this weekend.
We'll try again next weekend.
Logins remain enabled in both the primary and the new systems.

tahanson43206,
I had a small problem with my computer, but it's working for now. I need to buy new RAM. Anyway, I'm still going to complete the conversion.

For kbd512...
Congratulations on what's been accomplished!
Our regular members will need guidance about how to log in.
Is is possible to change the link on the top level newmars.com site?
At the moment when I click on that link I get the Maintenance message.
If you can change the pointer to the /new folder our members should be able to make the adjustment.
Plus, the message still says the site is down for maintenance. I think we could change that to point our members to the new site.
I believe that message is under control of an Admin, and I ** think ** it is in the database, but it may be in one of the php files.

We might be able to use email to help our members to adjust....
I'd prefer that we simply rename the folders.
Can you do that?
We could make "forums" "old" and we could make "new" forums, and everything should just work.

tahanson43206,
That's what I've been trying to figure out.

For kbd512 re email...
Just FYI ... I tried https://newmars.com/forum/ and get a 404.
Would it help to set up a Google meeting?

tahanson43206,
Maybe you're right. We should just change the directory named "forums" to "old_forums", change "new" to "forums", and then our problems are solved.

tahanson43206,
Yes, a meeting would probably help.

OK ... I'm just back from shopping and took a little while to unpack. All done. Will set up Google and report back when it's ready.

tahanson43206,
Change of plans folks, we're sticking with the original URL for the New Mars Forums software because we were unable to change the link from the New Mars Wiki Page ourselves.

For all ... as of 19:27 it appears kbd512 succeeded in purring the new software into operation using the old familiar login path.

For SpaceNut re #18
Thanks for this excellent news!
We will be able to use your Admin skills when you are available.
In the mean time, we'll just try to keep things humming.
FYI... kbd512 made a full back up of the database, and restored that to the new forum.
This is different from what he did to make the new forum for testing.
The advantage is that now we have a real honest to goodness backup, and it is now up on Dropbox.
