In another topic, the capabilities of Blender are presented. The focus of Blender appears to be movies, although games are supported.
OGRE is another set of software that includes animation, but the focus appears to be games.
Like Blender, OGRE is free.
A YouTube video is available to illustrate the capabilities of OGRE:

I acquired a set of books for study of C++ in 2007, when I was transitioning from working for an employer to an attempt to offer independent consulting.
Recently, I found those C++ books, essentially like new, having been set aside in favor of other programming languages that were better suited to immediate needs. To my surprise, the author of "C++ How To Program Sixth Edition" is not only still working, but he was kind enough to send the sample programs for the 15 year old book. Those samples have long since disappeared from the online repository where they were provided for students.
The book builds up to an exercise, using OGRE to re-create the PONG game. OGRE is written in C++, so (of course) it is a suitable environment for developing skills using C++.
Visualization of Large Ship and it's myriad of subsystems is going to be required, as Large Ship moves from science fiction fantasy through conceptualization to actualization.
At least two active members of this forum have experience (admittedly modest) working with Blender.
OGRE is one of many animation languages that are available.
This topic is dedicated to exploring it's potential for use with Large Ship.

As of this posting, I know nothing about OGRE, so do not know that it has a physics engine, such as the one provided by Blender.
However, it seems quite likely a physics engine is at the heart of the package, so OGRE might be capable of showing the physics inside Large Ship as passengers and crew deal with rotation at 3 RPM while navigating between Earth and Mars.
