Axiom Space

For SpaceNut ... we did not have a topic containing the word Axiom

This company is far more than a "Space Advocacy" organization, but the index structure of the forum does not have a place to track space business organizations.

To lead off, here is a link to an article about a planned civilian flight to the ISS:

For 1st Axiom launch with SpaceX, civilian science plays into new space station goals
Richard Tribou, Orlando Sentinel
Wed, November 17, 2021 9:00 AM

“That’s what I’m excited about,” he said. “It’s not about being the pilot. It’s about doing things that can only be done in space – experiments in microgravity. It’s a unique way to help humankind.”

The main experiment is on senescent cells, which are cells that have stopped dividing and are linked to many age-related diseases. He’s also performing an experiment on heart health. Before and after launch, Connor will also submit to MRIs so researchers can see the effect of spaceflight on spinal and brain tissue.

While the topic started about the possible breakup and one partner chosing to take there ball and go home I think we can open this up to having other stations put into orbit by others. It maybe that way if its not re-extended after 2024 again postponing its deorbit to after 2028....

The builders of the Axiom International Commercial Space Station aim to enlarge the landscape of low-Earth orbit, to create what they view as a “historic shift” in human spaceflight.

Making a space outpost available to nations, organizations and individuals could help make living and working in Earth orbit commonplace and support the exploration of deep space, Axiom representatives said.

Developing commercial destinations in low-Earth orbit is one of five elements of NASA's plan to open the International Space Station to new commercial and marketing opportunities. The other elements of the five-point plan include efforts to make station and crew resources available for commercial use through a new commercial use and pricing policy; enable private astronaut missions to the station; seek out and pursue opportunities to stimulate long-term, sustainable demand for these services; and quantify NASA's long-term demand for activities in low-Earth orbit.

Another step forward for station modules being more commercial has happened in  Axiom Space to build commercial space station segment first module launching in the second half of 2024.

Axiom-ISS.png

Axiom Space, an American company headquartered in Houston, Texas, to design, build and launch three large pressurized modules and a large Earth observation window to the International Space Station (ISS).

These are seemingly designed to work with the Gateway as well as the missions for mars and not just for the ISS to tryout first.

“NASA and Axiom will next begin negotiations on the terms and price of a fixed-price contract with a five-year base performance period and a two-year option” which indicates that these details have not been completely ironed out yet

NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than Tuesday, April 20, for launch of the second crew rotation mission with astronauts on an American rocket and spacecraft from the United States to the International Space Station.

Space firm plans first all-private crew plans to fly to the International Space Station in January 2022, consisting of four astronauts,

Connor and two businessmen, one from Canada and one from Israel, have agreed to pay Axoim $55 million for the experience. The company declined to say whether the tickets are fully paid already, or if the voyagers have made deposits. Axiom's financial arrangement with SpaceX also was not disclosed.

The three men are lining up research projects and educational programs to beam back to Earth during their mission, according to Axiom communications manager Beau Holder.

Axiom has support from NASA as the company builds a successor to the International Space Station, but there are many unknowns about the flight.

Axiom has agreements with NASA to connect privately owned segments to the space station starting in 2024. After the orbiting platform reaches obsolescence -- around 2030 -- Axiom intends to separate its units from the station and fly independently.

Passengers must spend 15 weeks in training after a physical, according to Axiom's mission description.

It is in hope that space tourism will flourish but that needs cheap flight costs so as for many to part take of the vacation away from earth. Just hoping that it will become more for business ventures as there are limited people whom can afford currently to go. The other part of this will drive further launcher companies to begin and for others to build more stations. The control of these are an issue for the future as the population that can go and will change the future for all by creating the frontier in which we dream of going too.

Axiom raises $130M for its space station — and adds Blue Origin alum to its board

Axiom Space is focusing on arranging privately funded trips to the International Space Station. Its first mission, known as Ax-1, is due to send former NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria and three paying customers to the station in a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule next year.

Axiom’s plan for its own space station would begin with the launch of a commercial module that would be hooked up to the International Space Station in the 2024 time frame. Additional modules would be added to Axiom’s complex during the years that follow. If the ISS is decommissioned in 2028, as planned, Axiom would detach its modules and operate them independently as a privately owned space station.

The dream of people getting space is alive. Company advances plan for private citizen flight to space station

Houston-based Axiom Space is negotiating final details of a contract with NASA to fly a private citizen to the International Space Station in 2021. The company advertises flights to space station for $55 million to $60 million to spend 10 days in microgravity at an altitude of over 250 miles. Passengers must spend 15 weeks in training after a physical, according to the mission description.

Not cheap...

axiom-space-iss-commercial-space-station-node-2-forward-port-module-hg.jpg

Axiom also is working on a private space station module, which it intends to launch in 2024, said Suffredini, who formerly served as NASA's space station program manager for 10 years. That module will be expanded until it can be detached as its own space station.

Wheeling and dealing Axiom is trading tickets on Russian rockets and US spacecraft

Houston, Texas’ Axiom Space. The firm, founded by former NASA executive Michael Suffredini in 2016, raised $130 million last month for its business flying tourists to the space station and, it hopes, eventually deploying its own orbital platform. This may be a smart arbitrage for Axiom: If the Soyuz seat cost less than a seat on a future commercial crew mission, Axiom made a profit—and turned a ride on an older Russian rocket into a seat on a modern American design it can then offer to its customers.

If the Soyuz seat was sold at the rates NASA last paid ($90.3 million), then compared to the estimated cost of a seat on a Crew Dragon ($60 million), Axiom just took a $30 million loss as a favor to the US space agency. But if Axiom paid less (Roscosmos sold rides on Soyuz for as low as $21 million in the early 2000s) then they effectively made money on the deal.

Sounds like stock investing buy low sell high...

2021-05-01 20:01:40

April 28, 2001, Dennis Tito achieved that lifelong goal - but he wasn't a typical astronaut. Tito, a wealthy businessman, paid US$20 million for a seat on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft to be the first tourist to visit the International Space Station.

traded seats coming soon from Axiom to get people to the ISS for a weeks stay....

nearer to the 55 million price tag....

Russians-prepare-for-arrival-of-new-space-station-module  wrap up preparations for detaching the two-decades-old Pirs airlock and docking compartment next month, clearing the way for the long-planned arrival of a new laboratory module.

Russian multi-purpose laboratory module — Nauka — will be launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan around the middle of July. Two days after launch, a Progress cargo ship now docked at Pirs will pull away from Zvezda, taking the old docking compartment with it. Both spacecraft will burn up harmlessly in a targeted re-entry over the Pacific Ocean.

Ax-1 is currently scheduled to launch in January 2022.

The International Space Station is expected to be retired by the end of this decade. NASA is turning to companies to build private space stations in orbit and anticipates saving more than $1 billion per year as a result

The ISS is more than 20 years old and costs NASA about $4 billion a year to operate. When NASA hosted an industry briefing for company officials in March, interested parties included recognizable names like Elon Musk's SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, Airbus, Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
NASA earlier this year unveiled the Commercial LEO Destinations project, with plans to award up to $400 million in total contracts to as many as four companies to begin development of private space stations.

NASA has already begun funding the ambitions of one company under a separate but related contract, having awarded Axiom Space with $140 million to build modules that will connect to the ISS. When the ISS retires, Axiom plans to detach its modules and turn it into a free-flying space station.

Axiom has begun manufacturing of those modules, including the enormous windows that will make up an observation deck. The company plans to launch and connect the first habitable module to the ISS by 2024, under the assumption that Congress provides the necessary funding to extend the space station's life to 2028.

First all-private space station mission to include two dozen experiments

A private space company that's planning to send the first all-private crew to the International Space Station announced on Wednesday that they will conduct medical and scientific experiments during their time in low Earth orbit.

Axiom Space said former NASA astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria will command the crew of four, who will fly to the space station on a SpaceX rocket in February. The company has not announced a firm date.

Mission pilot Larry Connor will conduct an experiment on behalf of the Mayo and Cleveland clinics, and mission specialist Mark Pathy will perform research for the Montreal Children's Hospital, Canadian Research Universities and Royal Canadian Geographical Society.

An experiment by mission specialist Eytan Stibbe will benefit the Ramon Foundation in collaboration with the Israel Space Agency in Israeli Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology.

The crew is scheduled to perform more than two dozen experiments in all, the company said.

"Humanity has only scratched the surface of low-Earth orbit's potential for breakthrough innovation, and Axiom was founded to push that envelope," Axiom President Michael Suffredini said in a statement.

NASA clears Axiom crew for 1st private mission to International Space Station scheduled to launch on Feb. 28, 2022.

The Ax-1 crew includes Michael López-Alegría, Larry Connor, Mark Pathy and Eytan Stibbe, according to a statement from NASA. The crew was approved by NASA and the Multilateral Crew Operations Panel, a coalition of five international space agencies that decides who flies to the International Space Station and each crew member's role for the mission.

The crew will be taking part in microgravity experiments during their eight-day mission aboard the ISS. A total of 25 experiments will focus on science, education and outreach, including research on the impact of space travel on senescent cells and heart health. Some of the planned research projects stem from Connor's long-time partnerships with Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic, according to Axiom.

companies like SpaceX and Northrop Grumman, whose billions of dollars' worth of space station supply contracts depend on ISS remaining in orbit.

Privately held Axiom Space, which is partnering with both SpaceX and NASA to first attach space station modules to ISS and later detach those segments from ISS to become an independent station.
Aerospace giant Boeing, which in cooperation with Blue Origin, Sierra Space, and Redwire, are working to build an "Orbital Reef" space station by 2030.
Fellow aerospace star Lockheed Martin, which is working with Nanoracks to build another space station dubbed "Starlab."
And Northrop Grumman, which plans to use the same Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module it's building for the Lunar Gateway space station as the basis for a separate space station (yet to be named) in Earth orbit.

The more places that are built means prices should start to come down fo flights and more.

Re: Axiom Space

Recent crews were put through the introduction to becoming current crew onboard the ISS from a privately launched currier.
A Private Crew Encountered A Bizarre Problem Onboard The Space Station

Gizmodo reports that the Axiom Mission 2 (Ax-2) crew aboard the International Space Station is settled in after getting a crash course on how to engage in everyday activities on the orbiting lab. In addition to learning about food prep and emergency protocols, the crew learned how to handle the most critical of emergencies aside from fires and pressure leaks. We’re talking, of course, about the ultimate form of pressure relief in zero gravity, which would be a trip to the space toilet.

The Ax-2 crew consists of Axiom Space director of Human Spaceflight Peggy Whitson, who is accompanied by mission specialists Ali Alqarni and Rayyanah Barnawi along with pilot John Shnoffner. These four crew members are experiencing orbit for the first time on this space mission and will spend around eight days on board the International Space Station while conducting research on the effects of microgravity on the production of stem cells, among other experiments. Not only did they learn how to use the space toilet and engage in other “hygiene practices” such as showering, but the Ax-2 crew was also clued into emergency protocols which involved locating fire extinguishers and portable breathing gear and getting familiarized with the appropriate escape routes should a non bathroom-related incident occur.

The space toilet in question is no ordinary toilet and operates using a series of tubes for both solid and liquid waste. On Earth, it’s common to doom-scroll on your phone while waiting for nature to run its course, but no such luxury exists on the International Space Station. Astronauts need their hands and feet to anchor themselves onto the toilet with handles and foot holds so they don’t float off during such a critical “landing mission.”

Though modern technology has brought us so many scientific marvels in the form of medical and aeronautical advancements, space toilet technology is still an issue for NASA. In fact, Axiom’s first mission to the International Space Station saw the space toilets going out of order which required assistance from the Russians, who were said to be quite accommodating despite a certain lack of diplomatic flexibility on planet Earth. We can’t think of a better form of peace offering than letting somebody use the restroom when they’re so far from home.
Private companies have also cited similar issues with their space toilets that they have yet to overcome. SpaceX had a structural breach in 2021 when the space toilet tubes took a leak of their own, contaminating the floor of the Inspiration4 spacecraft. This improper disposal of waste was not noticed until the vehicle got back to Earth when contamination was discovered underneath the flooring.

Next time you’re at a county fair or a concert venue, you should thank your lucky stars that you can still relieve yourself the good old-fashioned way. The fact of the matter is that engineering a 100 percent efficient space toilet is a lot harder than it sounds. But all difficulties aside, outer space bathroom incidents in 2023 are much easier to deal with than the infamous 1969 Apollo 10 mission in which the crew had to capture a foreign object in zero gravity that was aptly described as “a turd floating through the air.”

The Axiom crew is daring to “go where no man has gone before,” and we hope that their short trip to outer space is one that is remembered for its stunning sights rather than its smell.
