Really, how can you live in a nation which you apparently consider so vastly inferior to all others in every way?

Hmmm. . .

I have always believed that the need to thump one's own chest and ceaselessly proclaim superiority in all things was a sign of a deep seated lack of self-esteem.

America has been greatly blessed. Therefore, it owes the world much in return. From those to whom much is given, much is expected.

The Prophet most certainly can. But will it come when he calls it?

But can't forget that humans can also be incredibly destructive and self-destructive, outmatching anything Mother Nature and her other children can do.

I don't think I'd even go that far. Earthquakes, storms or volcanoes alone can equal or surpass anything humanity can dole out. Perhaps we're reaching the point of being as destructive as nature in certain capacities but not moreso.

But we can schedule the mayhem if we do it ourselves, and timing is often everything.  big_smile

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,10117,12 … .html]This report strikes my intuition as probably accurate.

Why did it happen?  IMHO? Overstretched and over stressed troops facing too many daily attacks.

The US troops ordered the injured Ms Sgrena and the driver, another secret service agent, to kneel on the road. Then, Mr Fini told parliament, "two young American soldiers came up close, looking upset, and apologised repeatedly".

"It is ruled out that there was an attempt on Giuliana Sgrena's life," Mr Fini said. "The hypothesis of an assassination is unfounded – we are dealing with an accident that needs to be clarified."

This story may just be beginning.

And this must be investigated much more thoroughly. If it's just the Leftist press making noise it doesn't matter, but if there's something to it we need to address it.

As far as I'm concerned, any American soldier that starts raping/pillaging like a Soviet conscript should be publicly executed, but I also don't take kindly to such accusations being leveled without compelling evidence.

(a) Fair enough, I agree; and

(b) Stories like the Guardian story (even if willfully false) gain traction precisely because this Administration has been less than transparent concerning Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo & the rendition of terror suspects to nations that openly torture.

Thus, cases like the one with Jose Padilla (the US citizen being held without pending charges) undermine our moral legitimacy and is therefore imprudent even if all issues of morality are set aside.

= = =

From a purely Machiavellian perspective, whether the Guardian story is true is less important than whether the Guradian story is believed on the streets of Europe.

Transparent investigation of such charges (as called for by Cobra) accomplishes two objectives:

(a) justice; and

(b) furthering the "psy ops" war needed to maintain the moral high ground.

On Friday night in Iraq, A car was approaching Baghdad airport when it was fired upon by US soldiers guarding that road. In the Vehicle was the freed Italian hostage Ms Giuliana Sgrena a reporter for a communist newspaper and Italian secret service agents. As the car was raked by Bullets the lead Negotiator jumped across Ms Sgrena and though she was hit by shrapnel she survived. The lead negotiator though was killed.

His name was Nicola Calipari and today his funeral was held in Rome. Rome stopped for this hero.

This story may http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0, … c=rss]just be beginning.

The U.S. is not perfect and we have made mistakes--but we are the most generous power to ever exist on this planet. We don't conquer; we liberate. We stay for long enough to clean up the mess, we democratize a formerly-authoritarian state, we make sure it's stable, and we leave. The only land we request is to bury our dead.

Yup. Once, this was true. Past tense.

Our current Administration is expending the reputation (and wealth) to accomplish its own ends having nothing to do with the values.

I see Cobra has cracked open the Kool-Aid again.

Last weekend David Brooks (a Bushie) wrote a column gushing about a Lebanese politician demanding that Syria withdraw their forces. "See" Brooks wrote, "Bush got it right."

Unfortunately, a month ago that same Lebanese praised those killing US soldiers in Iraq. Seems he wants the Syrians the hell out of Lebanon AND the Americans the hell out of Iraq. And if killing Americans helped that goal, well good.

Yup, freedom is on the march.

IIRC, Mars is sulfur rich. Sulphur for you UK-ians.

This guy says you melt sulfur and use that instead of water as binder for concrete. I wonder if you could cast it around an inflatable mold, let it cure and then deflate the mold for re-use.

A good Sunday morning Hunter S. Thompson quote:

"This may be the year when we finally come face to face with ourselves; finally just lay back and say it -- that we are really just a nation of 220 million used car salesmen with all the money we need to buy guns, and no qualms at all about killing anybody else in the world who tries to make us uncomfortable."

The sermon on the above text is left as an exercise for the reader.

Central Wisconsin, the land of beer, brats and cheese. My poor wife tried to order a glass of wine.

Kept saying mer-low, mer-low and finally the waitress say "oh, you mean mer-lot (rhymes with cot) why didn't you say so?"

Nonetheless, Madison remains a liberal stronghold. Gotta keep the post on-thread.  :;):

What we need are rockets that combust snake oil with LOX.

There has got to be a story title arising from the idea of "burning some snake oil"

#1295 Re: Not So Free Chat » Parapraxis » 2005-03-03 09:51:27

Ringtones generated four billion dollars in sales around the world in 2004

And cost what to produce?

Snake oil will finance humanity's expansion into space. Who knew you could burn the stuff as rocket fuel?

Okay, lets review.

The Sudan/Darfur situation constitutes genocide.

Yup, I agree,

The United Nations is a weak, corrupt, ineffectual organization which cannot cope with the Sudan/Darfur situation.

Yup. I agree.

Why this is can be debated but is not currently relevant. I say we now look to the underlying power conflicts between the member states. I also say bashing the United Nations is a waste of time and that this Administration desire that we do exactly that - - bash the UN - - to deflect attention from other issues.

The UN is a dead horse. Stop beating a dead horse. How far behind is the US in paying UN dues?

The Administration would like to maintain the UN on life support with a feeble pulse for the express purpose of inflicting further bashings to energize its right wing political base.

THAT is hypocritical.

= = =

The draft? Current Administration policy requires a draft to be sustainable.

That is an opinion about strategic facts, neither Right nor Left.

#1299 Re: Human missions » Zubrin, Mars Doc has website up. - Check it out. » 2005-03-02 22:39:50

I think it is safe to say that the ISS is the perfect textbook example of why extensive orbital assembly is to be avoided. If you can't launch your Mars ship in three pieces or less, then you are going to get into quite a bit of trouble.

Do we agree or disagree? How many pieces (launches) are optimal for a lunar mission?

One major conflict zone for the 21st century will be China, India and the US fighting over a limited supply of oil.

And it will be a marathon, not a sprint.
