#101 Re: Meta New Mars » Leadership Qualities for a Virtual Environment » 2020-09-15 23:40:31

Why would someone follow you? Because they have to? Because they are expected to? That isn't management or leadership. Follow me because i say so. Follow me because you have to. Right? It's bullshit. You are allowed to ask why it is that you do what you do. You are allowed to ask why what you do is a better ROI. If you dont want to ask, cool, the alternative is simply WTF are we doing.

Mars is absence. Mars is the results of non commitment

#102 Re: Not So Free Chat » Election Meddling » 2020-08-31 23:23:21

I suppose it is all well and good none of us live in an environment with an airlock.

The hatred in these posts is telling. The binary black and white positioning leaving no room for consideration, just more polarization is telling. Win at all costs nature of the debate leads only to a Pyrrhic victory, recriminations, and nothing learned by no one.

I often imagine what this type of situation would like on Mars. How elastic is security and liberty when one disenfranchised soul can doom thousands with a hammer or a push of a button? What does tolerance and compassion look like when everyone lives under equal amounts of mutually assured destruction in the event a minority is persecuted? But I digress.

I think the conversation was around the legitimacy of a 17 year old, from out of town, shooting some other people in the streets, right? He was practically forced to go and kill those people. Vigilante justice. Yep. This is the America we want. Right?

We submit a monopoly  of force to the State and when that monopoly is used to perpetuate unnecessary violence against a class of people within our social compact, and do nothing, we are all guilty of allowing this to be done in our name. We become complicit.

When a class of people within our social compact universally declare that the very arm of the State sanctioned to uphold our collective safety is perpetuating ongoing and systemic violence, we should collectively pause and examine the system we have in place. To do otherwise is to be complacent.

Be they sinners, godless heathens, or criminals, how we treat our most wretched is a reflection of our own soul, collective or otherwise. To say nothing of the countless innocents who died at the hands of police for being the wrong color in the wrong place at the wrong time.

But hey, looks like this is all being tied up in a nice bow with the explanations. Good luck.

#105 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender... » 2020-04-17 23:04:27

I did not mean to cite the Bard, but will accept the association. What many here have missed, in my long years lingering have observed, is that our dream of Mars is bereft of passion. So many paint in the black and white of mathematical formula, make chromatic a scientific theory of possibility, outline an antiseptic uncaring image of a world with no connection to history or to emotion.

Will we sail a 100 million miles to create a calendar that commemorates long dead terran scientists for no other reason than to be different from our Terran birth? No. Mars will adopt a calendar that facilitates business, as you identify, but recognizes a meaningful structure based on local conditions. Earth Rise, Earth Fall. If you think me wrong, our own earth calendar is based on the same concept of Sun Rise, and Sun Fall as it dictates the results of a society dependent on agriculture. Mars will be dependent on the Earth for any length of predictable future in the same way.

In a Mars/Earth business relationship, the actual dates are not important. The time lag and the relationship of conjunction is, which again goes back to why Earth Rise (getting closer) and Earth Fall (moving away) is a more critical element for any calendar.

Something to chew on.

Either way, kudos on the commitment to your calendar. The only thing missing, in my opinion, is something that allows people to actually connect. Halves and Quarters are great mathematical constructs, but Friday night is something we all relate to more than Day 5 of 7, Second half, Third iteration of Four in the Seventh Month of Twelve.

Again, I entreat you, go forth and make merry. Spin the wheel. Play the odds. You’ve clearly dissected  the numbers in a way that makes you comfortable.

Hospitalization rates are down because of mitigation efforts. We don’t hospitalize because you have covid. We hospitalize because you can’t breathe. Rates are down because overall infection rates are lowering. Because of mitigation.

Again, do what you want. Self select out you and your social circle. Because that’s what you are going to do. Cheers.

Dear TH,

I appreciate your contributions. Your assessment is misguided. Enjoy yourself alone. Plenty of sand on the beach for everyone to have their own sandcastle.

Beware the tide.

#108 Re: Not So Free Chat » Politics » 2020-04-16 00:16:28

Using math based on stats generated through policy outcomes designed to drive down the very numbers you are using to prove your misguided point is ironic.

Hospitalization rates are down for precisely the reason you rail against.  No coordinated mitigation effort results in Italy level death tolls, or like NY, which become inundated and the system overwhelmed causing a higher death rate as the health system could not respond.

Regarding where Covid sits in the pantheon of causes of human death, if we land around 60K, which is the current projection, it will end up being the third or 4th leading cause of death.

Disease-Graph-Draft-7-1024x576.jpg

But hey KB, you got this. Get out there, enjoy yourself. Maybe go to that rally and shake those hands.  Live it up and hit that concert; that stadium game with 50K all pressed against you, cheering the same sane mantra you outline here. There is a poetic fatalism in saying "f*ck it".

I'm sure math will be on your side. Let your convictions be the light in the darkness that science fails to be.

See you in the obits brother.

#109 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender... » 2020-04-15 23:41:13

Thanks tahanson4306; I'll refer to you simply as TH for short.

What most calendar's miss is that time keeping and date keeping are largely subjective and entirely ego-centric experiences. We frame dates in relation to ourselves and our needs. Thus two book ends to bank on will be a Mars/Earth relationship. A Mars approach to Earth will have a real effect on people living/working on Mars just as a Earth retreat will have a real effect on people. This contextualizes and makes meaningful the date or time period. A calendar has to be anchored to these types of points.  Additional reference points will be local weather conditions that require modification to behavior; seasonal dust storm patterns, solar maximum/minimum values, temps that equate to martian winter or summer that have material effects on hardware or interaction with the local environment result in a more meaningful calendar or time keeping system

June *means* something, inherently, in and of itself. We have shared reference points that allow the calendar to act as a communication tool to express the experience of time.  Every Martian calendar will fail unless it includes this core component.

Second month of the 3rd quarter and 2nd half has no context or reference for a shared experience. Earth Fall, Feb (or Earth Rise, Feb) achieves the same concept of a 24 month calendar that roughly translates to a terran counterpart without over-complicating the terminology.  Just a thought.

#110 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Martian Calender - I have created a martian calender... » 2020-04-15 00:29:40

Calendars are the result of agrarian societies and the need to plan seeding and harvest. Any future martian calendar should apply the same methodology.

Martian calendar will be based on a cyclical time scale based on Earth Approach, and Earth Retreat. Times of plenty equate to Earth approach and the ability to communicate more quickly, and for quicker transit; times of absence equate with longer communication times and longer transit or resupply.

Earth will hold the same importance as the Sun holds for Earth.

#111 Re: Not So Free Chat » Politics » 2020-04-15 00:21:32

Sanity check. How many of you want to play these odds: 1 in 5 you require ICU level hospitalization that you can pick up from handling plastic or carboard? How many of you want to play the odds if you are unfortunate enough to get sick, you have a 50% to 80% mortality rate. This is math folks, not politics. Science. Don't be f*cking clowns and pretend otherwise.

You think you would launch a f*cking rocket with these odds? WTF is wrong with you? You are on a Mars board and this is the level of debate?

We just came online with enough capacity to test existing patient populations, barely. We still do not have legitimate antibody testing. We still do not have any other form of treatment other than, "good f*cking luck". Pretty sure economic prosperity is not found when people are f*cking dying in the goddamn streets.

Yeah, we all have to get this disease and hope to god we survive. But the rationale approach in this situation is to have us all get this disease slowly so the goddamn health system has capacity to care for us when it is our turn to play Russian roulette. This isn't politics, this is being goddamn f*cking pragmatic. Chances of survival are pretty bad to begin with,  but overwhelming the health system makes collective survival rates approach zero.

And you can't quarantine 3% of the population because the goddamn virus attacks everyone. Completely healthy adults without pre-existing conditions are susceptible. If you want to lock up the hypertension, overweight, pre-diabetic crew, congrats, you've locked up a third of US adults. Congratu-f*cking-lations. What the hell do you think economic recovery looks like in that scenario?

Asteroids often drift in silence for ages. So to those who look up.

Cheers.

#113 Re: Not So Free Chat » South of the Border Politics » 2019-10-24 01:23:19

kbd512. hoo rah. whatever.

you are an american. so am i. we are fuc*ing demeaned. we can disagree on policy. we disagree, i know, it's cool. but come the f*ck on. Don't sell yourself and your principles for the short term Trump gain. Reject the liberal alternative, but also reject what is categorically a rejection of your core values.

Or not. Whatever.

#114 Re: Not So Free Chat » Mueller's Russian Investigation » 2018-12-29 02:05:07

kbd512,

Assuming that Clinton committed or perpetuated every crime attributed to her, what does that matter if our current president is committing or has committed fraud or crimes?

Just because the other guy got away with it seems like a poor excuse to absolve what we know to be poor behavior for our current regime.

#115 Re: Not So Free Chat » Trump Proposes U.S. ‘Space Force’ to Guard the Galaxy » 2018-12-29 01:58:02

Space force only plays out one way: Project Thor, Rods from God. the logical conclusion is an administrative arm of the military that oversees kinetic kill vehicles in LEO that can rubbilize  non-nuclear state actors.

#116 Re: Civilization and Culture » Holidays » 2018-12-29 01:42:33

There are four holidays/dates of observation that transcend all the other suggestions. The Sun and Earth rule all foreseeable futures.

Mars perihelion
Mars aphelion
Mars/Earth Opposition
Mars/Earth Conjunction

All that space, it would be sad if at the end, all our questions were answered.

Check out "We are legion" by Dennis Taylor. It's an easy read, and a novel take on the genre. Speaks directly to your fantasy. I read the series, and while there are some trite conceits, it is good popcorn fare.

Mars. Fires happen inside, not outside. Simple design is favored over complex or ones requiring high technology/advanced metallurgy/processing.

Airlocks. Quick vents that drop air pressure or oxygen levels. Build Carbon dioxide spray nozzles for fire suppression if you don't want to vent.

You are on Mars, use Mars. Be a f*cking Martian.

#119 Re: Not So Free Chat » JOBS Jobs Jobs why are there none » 2018-12-05 20:27:17

Dear terraformer, is "clark" my real name?

No. I spell mine with a K.

#120 Re: Not So Free Chat » Epilepsy » 2018-12-05 20:24:20

Yeah, I hear you. But come on, a non-poster sliding into a forum about Mars to talk about their epileptic kid? You bring it up, okay, you have some street cred here to ask an honest question in a moment of panic. Someone without history? They are just here to take advantage of people who are at their cores, dreamers. It is doubly offending if it there is predation on people here who actually suffer from this or have family that does.

I can be more friendly. I should be more friendly. I will try. Sorry for being a dick.

I'm a misanthrope.  Thus an empty planet draws me, so I find myself here.  Work in progress and all. Take care and may your Christmas be merry.

#121 Re: Human missions » "clark's calamity", when bad luck is all you have » 2018-12-04 22:47:30

oldfart for the win, pity the congratulations given the handle

tahanson43206, look elsewhere for your kickstarter. the problem set is different enough to exclude commonality.

also, for the crew: tahanson43206, if you are asking this kind of clarifying question, you don't actually appreciate mars and are probably only here to exploit others.

#122 Re: Not So Free Chat » JOBS Jobs Jobs why are there none » 2018-12-04 22:33:45

Are any of you actually buying this garbage? tahanson43206, at what point should we give you are credit card numbers?

#123 Re: Civilization and Culture » Build Your Own » 2018-12-04 22:16:01

i choose madness.

reduce material into energy and blast off into interstellar.

I journey to what I cannot reach. I seek what may not be sought.

kbd512, you got catfished on this.

The post was generated to illicit responses and further reinforce clicks through to the website referenced in the post.

In another life we would have been friends. Cheers.
