#76 Re: Not So Free Chat » dr who returns THIS SATURDAY (19th) - be afraid ..... VERY AFRAID! » 2005-03-20 03:32:23

did anybody else see last night's documentary on Dr Who?

TONS of clips from all the old Dr Who's - was really good, the mastermind thing was a real disappointment - what a bore

I thought that would be a real crack but turned it off after 10 minutes, really really bad, they asked the contenders for titles of programmes and who wrote this and what was the name of this character  ???

Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy were on there way too much for my liking but there was one funny bit with McCoy

He said that once a fan came up to him after his dr who career had taken off saying, "Wow - Dr Who - this has made my day BTW you are my fifth favourite Dr!!  tongue " McCoy replied "Thank goodness I'm not your seventh favourite dr that's all I can say"

Each of the Doctors was wonderful in his own unique way. Let me put in a special word for Colin Baker though, who, thrillingly, took more risks with his characterization and pushed the envelope further than anyone else. His great love for the series and the character shone through then and shines through still.
J Vail, Brookline, Massachusetts, USA

Patrick Troughton and then John Pertwee were the Doctors I "grew up with", though quite frankly I couldn't care less about who the best one was as I always watched "Garrison's Guerillas" on the other side instead.
Martin Lewis, Auckland, NZ

The best TV Doctor for me was Patrick Troughton although I have to say that all the others have really good qualities. And for those people who think that Colin Bakers Doctor was poor, I suggest that they take a listen to the Big Finish Doctor Audio range where his Doctor (along with Paul McGanns 8th Doctor) have really been given a chance to shine and show people exactly how they could have been given the time and the right scripts.
Colin Lambert, Birmingham

Tom Baker IS at timelord - if there is such a thing. Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow!
Matt Ashman, Wickford, Essex

<span style='font-size:17pt;line-height:100%'>Illegal filesharers pay thousands of pounds in compensation :</span> 4:3:2005

> 23 settlements from all over the UK

> Filesharers pay up to £4,500 in settlement

> BPI announces another 31 cases across 8 different P2P networks

UK record companies’ trade association the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) today announced that 23 UK internet users have agreed to pay thousands of pounds in compensation for distributing music illegally via peer-to-peer networks on the internet.

The BPI said it will also bring 31 new cases against filesharers from across the UK as it steps up its campaign against illegal filesharing. And in a broadening of the campaign the new actions will span eight different filesharing networks. Further cases will follow.

BPI Chairman Peter Jamieson said, “Unauthorised filesharing is against the law. It effectively steals the livelihood of musicians and the record companies who invest in them. We will not hesitate to protect the rights of our members and the artists they represent.”

BPI General Counsel Geoff Taylor said, “We are determined to find people who illegally distribute music, whichever peer-to-peer network they use, and to make them compensate the artists and labels they are stealing from.

“These settlements show we can and we will enforce the law. No one should be in any doubt that we will continue to do so.”

Illegal filesharers discover the cost of “free music”

The 23 settlements announced today arise out of the 26 cases announced by the BPI in October 2004. Three cases are still in negotiation and legal action may follow.

The settlements include internet users from all over the UK – 17 men and six women. The average settlement is more than £2,000 – more than a month’s salary for the average UK worker. Two illegal filesharers are paying more than £4,000 each to settle their cases.

BPI General Counsel Geoff Taylor explained, “We have no desire to drag people through the courts. So we have attempted to reach fair settlements where we can.

“We hope people will now begin to get the message that the best way to avoid the risk of legal action and paying substantial compensation is to stop illegal filesharing and to buy music online, safely and legally, instead.”

<span style='font-size:17pt;line-height:100%'>Downloading music</span>
CBC News Online | Updated June 30, 2004

In a unanimous 9-0 decision on June 30, 2004, the Supreme Count of Canada ruled that internet service providers are not responsible for paying royalties on music downloaded by users.

The court said although ISPs provide the hardware and technology, they are only "intermediaries" who are not responsible for what people download and are not bound by federal copyright legislation.

The decision is the latest legal blow to the music recording industry, which is trying to stop the unauthorized downloading of millions of songs over the internet. Musicians, composers and artists are not usually paid royalties when songs are downloaded to a computer over file-sharing networks.

Court rules ISPs don't have to identify music sharers

Federal Court of Canada Justice Konrad von Finckenstien's March 31, 2004, ruling on downloading music from the internet was seen as a major setback by the music industry and a victory by internet service providers.

The Canadian Recording Industry Association wanted a court order to identify 29 uploaders that CRIA claims illegally posted hundreds of songs on the internet. Finckenstein refused and without the names, CRIA cannot take legal action for damages.

"No evidence was presented that the alleged infringers either distributed or authorized the reproduction of sound recordings," von Finckenstein wrote in his 28-page ruling. "They merely placed personal copies into their shared directories which were accessible by other computer users via a P2P service."

The ruling stipulates that:
Downloading a song for personal use is not an infringement.

Placing a song in an on-line music-sharing directory such as Kazaa is not considered distribution.
The music industry claims the rising practice of sharing music on the internet is the reason CD sales are dropping. But a study released in March 2004 by Harvard Business School claims that swapping had no impact on sales.

Other surveys show the opposite result, claiming Internet sharing of music does hurt sales. The Harvard study claims that the people surveyed - who were file-swapping users - did not answer truthfully when asked if they buy copies of the music they download. The authors of the Harvard study got permission to track the files being downloaded and then tracked the U.S. sales of the same music and found that an increase in downloading didn't correlate with a decrease in sales.

In May 2004, the standing committee on Canadian heritage released its recommendations on strengthening copyright law. They include signing two World Intellectual Property Organization treaties that would:

Clarify the definition of distribution to include putting copyrighted material on a peer-to-peer file-sharing network. Allow music companies to use software to limit the number of copies that can be made from a recording. Make it illegal to sell software that cracks through the copy-protection coding.

The committee also asked for changes in the Copyright Act to make internet service providers (ISPs) subject to liability for copyrighted information.

Lawrence Lessig, an expert on Internet law from Stanford University's Law School, and Matt Oppenheim, senior vice president of business and legal affairs for the Recording Industry Association of America, answer your questions about this heated debate]

A. Eric from Duluth, Minn. asks:

I ask this question from the standpoint of a musician. My question is: how much money will the artists receive from the alleged online 'pirates' whom the RIAA is prosecuting and suing for billions in damages?

How much of any money gained from lawsuits will go back to the original artists for the violation/theft of their copyrighted works? How are funds gained from settlements and/or lawsuits distributed among the record companies, the RIAA, and the musicians? Thank you for your time.

B. Brian Boyko from Allendale, N.J. asks:

The RIAA claims that Internet users who download free of charge deprive artists, producers and companies a major portion of their revenue, which, the RIAA claim, is having devastating effects on the industry. However, artists are being cheated out of their revenue -- royalties on sold CDs - by the record companies, not Internet downloaders. Please comment.

Lawrence Lessig from Stanford Law School responds to both questions:

The RIAA is the Recording Industry Association of America. It is not the Recording Industry and Artists Association of America. It says its concern is artists. That's true, in just the sense that a cattle rancher is concerned about its cattle.

Many, including I, doubt that the RIAA's actions actually benefit artists. They clearly benefit the relatively concentrated recording industry, which is fighting like hell to protect itself against new forms of competition. But there are many who believe that these new forms of competition -- if allowed to develop and mature -- would directly benefit artists.

Maybe not Madonna -- but it would certainly help the vast majority of artists who can barely scrape by under the existing system.

Matt Oppenheim from the Recording Industry Association of America responds:

A. When record companies file infringement suits, we frequently are trying to stop the piracy and deter others from engaging in that same form of piracy. Indeed, more often than not, our litigations are attempting to establish a legal precedent or make clear that we are prepared to sue music thieves if they do not stop. Unfortunately, the vast majority of music thieves that are sued are not well enough off to pay a large judgment that would cover the costs of enforcement and pay the copyright owners and artists for their losses.

In those instances in which there have been recoveries, such as the case against MP3.com, each individual record company pays their artists according to the individual contract that they have with the artist. There is no single industry rate or manner of dealing with this.

but what do YOU think? Do YOU download music off the internet? Or do you prefer to get your music from HMV?   tongue

Fiancée leads crusade against IRA killers
By David Lister
Murder of young father may prove to be the turning point as support for republican extremists begins to fade

BRIDGEEN Hagans has just one word for the men who killed her fiancé — “scum”.
In any other part of the United Kingdom the description would barely raise an eyebrow, given the circumstances in which Robert McCartney died. He was stabbed in the stomach and kicked repeatedly in the head as he fell to the pavement outside a city-centre pub.

This, though, is the Short Strand in Belfast, where if anybody is to be referred to as “scum” it is certainly not the local IRA.

In this tight-knit republican neighbourhood, it is no surprise that Ms Hagans, 27, can name every one of the IRA members who, she believes, killed her boyfriend; what is astonishing is that she is prepared to do it publicly.

The IRA may be adept at dealing with political crises, but it has been caught off-guard after Mr McCartney’s murder sparked an unprecedented community rebellion and a wave of support from nationalist areas across Northern Ireland.

http://avantgo.thetimes.co.uk/services/ … .html]full story here and http://www.westwindnet.com/ireland/deba … t=]ireland uncensored FORUMS here

There are some harrowing photos of the brave widow, Bridgeen Hagans and her two boys aged 2 and 4 in yesterday's TIMES newspaper. Together with the article, it makes powerful reading alright  sad

<ul><li>They’re psychopaths who have been empowered
<li>his murder may prove a turning point as other communities across the province wrestle against their paramilitary rulers
<li>When a 17-year-old was forced to put his hands together as if in prayer before being shot through both wrists, there was no outcry</ul>

Intimidation on such a grand scale is a massive challenge to overcome for authorities in Northern Ireland. These "psychopaths" rely on this intimidation and score heavily by it. In the 1920s Chicago mobsters enjoyed such horrific intimidation skills that they were virtually untouchable. Nobody would dare give evidence against them and if they tried, they were often killed. What's changed?    sad

Friends 'delighted' by Charles wedding plans

10/02/2005 - 09:51:35

Friends of Britain's Prince of Wales today welcomed news of his impending marriage to Camilla Parker Bowles.

Conservative MP Nicholas Soames said he was “absolutely delighted” that the couple had announced they are to wed, on a date thought to be April 6.

“I’m very, very happy for both the Prince of Wales and Mrs Parker Bowles. I think it’s wonderful,” he said.

He refused to comment on how long the couple had been considering the step, and whether it would cause constitutional difficulties.
----------------
LONDON - Prince Charles said Thursday he will marry his divorced lover Camilla Parker Bowles in April, putting an official seal on a long romance that Princess Diana blamed for the breakdown of her tempestuous marriage to the heir to the throne. The announcement ruled out the possibility that she would become queen.

The Prince of Wales and Parker Bowles will marry on Friday, April 8, at Windsor Castle, said Clarence House, Charles' residence and office.

During a visit to London's financial district Thursday, Charles accepted congratulations on his pending nuptials.

"Thank you very much, you're so kind." he said. "I am very excited."

Parker Bowles will use the title Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cornwall after the marriage. When Charles becomes king, she will not be known as Queen Camilla but as the princess consort, Charles' office said.

That decision by the prince appeared to be a nod to public opinion, which has never warmed to Camilla.

The marriage will be a civil service and not a Church of England service.

"There will subsequently be a service of prayer and dedication in St. George's Chapel at which the Archbishop of Canterbury will preside," Charles' office said.

2351.jpg Digital fly-by-wire primary flight controls on the A380

The world’s only twin-deck, four-aisle airliner

The airlines’ solution to growing demand for air travel

The green giant, more fuel-efficient than your car

The A380’s twin-aisle twin deck passenger cabin offers the long distance traveller a whole new level of comfort. A cabin designed around a large sample of today’s real passengers providing more space regardless of class of ticket, wider seats and aisles. Optional lower deck use for rest areas, business, bar or other amenities can further enhance the A380 travel experience.

COCKPIT:
FLY-BY-WIRE AND SIDESTICKS

Reflecting its fly-by-wire advantages, the flight deck entirely lacks the cumbersome, old-generation control columns of its competitors. Instead, it has the neat and simple sidesticks which pilots find so easy to use. Additional benefits are an unobstructed view of the instrument panel and a slide-out working table in front of each pilot.

ECAM AND EFIS SCREEN DISPLAYS

Gone are the dozens of round instrument dials, now replaced by just six CRT screen displays. All six screens are fully display/function interchangeable and there are electro-mechanical instruments as back-up.

Four screens, two in front of each pilot, form the Electronic Flight Instrument System, while two central screens are the display part of the Electronic Centralized Aircraft Monitor (ECAM).

Four screens, two in front of each pilot, perform Electronic Flight Instrument System (EFIS) functions.

The outboard screens - Primary Flight Displays (PFDs) - carry data on a range of parameters including speed, altitude, aircraft attitude and heading. Current status of the Flight Management System (FMS) is also shown. The inboard Navigation Display (ND) screens show data on the aircraft’s position and course. These may be displayed in selectable modes: Arc, Rose ILS, Rose VOR or Plan.

Two screens in the centre of the main instrument panel display information derived from the ECAM whose sensors throughout the aircraft keep systems under constant surveillance. The upper and lower screens - both manually and automatically - show engine and systems parameters and warnings.

d82762lja39.jpg HEHE tongue just got the RERELEASE of Wonderworld, original release 1974 ......... rerelease 2004

awesome recording and bonus tracks too of course

I remember Wonderworld so well from 1974, classic album but not Heep's best. THAT was Sweet Freedom
321636.jpg absolutely brilliant, just 8 tracks but all as solid as the Bank of England

going back to Wonderworld though, the bonus tracks seem to be made up of old 'B sides' that never saw the light of day and 2 LIVE tracks.  Well the live track of "So tired" is pretty good, I have never heard Kerslake's drumming QUITE so clear, it is unbelievable and then "I won't mind" - well what the SCHMEG happened to the keyboards in that? Gone!! What was Hensley doing during that track? Having a cup of tea? Out the back swapping cards? Yikes what a shame and then "Dreams" the extended version, well a cracking track - no doubt about it, but what a vile and unpleasant shock to the system, to hear a sudden superimposed repeating chant start up, during what is supposed to be the last atmospheric and magic phase to the song. Suddenly the band start chanting "sweet freedom" in the background and totally ruin the last 4 minutes of the schmegging song!!  what PLONKER decided to do that?   wasted opportunity there but overall YES, fabulous reproduction of sound, the original tracks in probably far better sound quality - a great booklet with super super photos and out of the bonus tracks - try "So tired" - definitely worth a listen

BTW the best Heep album going "Sweet Freedom," is still available (e.g. HMV) - get your hands on it right now and if you have cash to spare - Wonderworld too, why not - great great music I'm telling ya   big_smile

What is safe to download? Is it a trap or do you KNOW it is genuine and without virus (to the best of your knowledge) ?

Well there's only one way that you could recommend such a download! You downloaded it yourself - it works, it's good quality and you didn't get a virus or any spyware (that you know of)

Ok me first 3DEarth_screen4_small.gif

Click http://www.blitzcoder.com/cgi-bin/showc … etup.exe]> HERE to download a SUPERB 1.8MB screen saver<

What the heck is a screensaver? Well if you leave your PC in mid sentence, the phone rings - it's your great Uncle Bulgaria who launches into a 20 minute conversation about what Auntie Mavis did at the shops, when you get BACK to your PC, what do you see? A Black screen with alternating "Windows" icons, you move the mouse and that screen disolves

THAT SCREEN was the screensaver but imagine if instead of that boring old black screen you could have a slowly spinning world, clouds, stars, sunflare, cities - YEP!! It is free, stable, high quality and yep!! I recommend it!! Just download it  then you'll have to get into the Display Properties option of Windows (right-click on the mouse when the pointer is on the background Windows screen), select the Screensaver tab, and then select the screensaver named "3DEarth" from the drop-down list.

After that, the "3DEarth" screensaver automatically cuts in instead of the crappy black thing you used to see, I recommend this download http://www.blitzcoder.com/cgi-bin/showc … ments=no]> full details of the 1.8MB download are here <

OK - has anybody else downloaded anything recently? Would you recommend it to other members on here?  big_smile

On Christmas Eve, http://www.yorkshiretoday.co.uk/ViewArt … 910716]the Huygens probe — a disk about 9-feet across — detached itself from the much larger Cassini craft and began a free fall to Titan, which is Saturn's largest moon and one of the most mysterious objects in the solar system. If all goes as planned, it will touch down Jan. 14.

The next step on the mission is for Cassini to correct her trajectory. "At the moment, Cassini is following us, to crash onto Titan," Sollazzo said. But on December 29, Cassini will fire her engines to deflect her orbit so that she will miss Titan while Huygens descends. Then, on December 31 and January 1, Cassini will target Iapetus, Saturn's wayward yin-yang moon, passing within 117,000 kilometers (72,700 miles) of the surface. Apart from that encounter, "Cassini will go into a quiet mode to get ready to support the probe link," Sollazzo said.

Come January 14, the action will be in Darmstadt, Germany, at ESA's European Space Operations Centre (ESOC). The Planetary Society will be there to wait and watch with the mission team to see what Huygens reveals http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercuryn … 049.htm]of the surface of Titan, and will share the new facts, images, and sounds with the world as they arrive.

and on Sky Movies 8 the whole of the "New Battlestar Galactica" and I can tell you that this remake is SUPERB, very very good, anybody else seen it?

27 DEC Terminator2 on ITV2, gotta see that again
Morecambe and Wise on Channel5 - don't miss that one!
and what about LOTR: Two Towers on Sky Movies 1?

28DEC what about SMALL SOLDIERS on BBC1? very good, I love that
and GhostbustersII on Disney, fabulous
Resident Evil is back on Sky Movies 6, really does the game proud that, although 10 minutes past the start, the plot has really submerged so far FROM the game you do wonder

29DEC 'FINAL FANTASY: Spirits Within' on the Disney Channel, yes slated by so many and yet what a cool SCI FI film this truly is, well worth a look

well I have never seen 'Gilligan's Island,' but somebody made a tribute film "Surviving Gilligan's Island" and now I just gotta see the series! (Sky Movies 3)

what about "Beatles' Big Secrets" on Ch5? The Fab Four on tour? what could they do apart from escape in a Yellow Submarine?

ok, JAN1 Gotta see "THE OTHERS" on BBC1, great film and I love the part when the mother goes out into the woods, just WHAT does she find?  :?:

<span style='font-size:8pt;line-height:100%'>( if you don't have Sky TV or cableTV please accept my apologies for boring you to death, I pay a fortune for cableTV - I get my TV channels and broadband internet from the same service, it's an arm and a leg but I have a missus 2 kids a lame parrot and a muttley to entertain  )</span>

Josh, this is an interesting subject, thanks for the reply

"quarterly back ups" ?

so you are saying that the maximum damage possible, after a crash to these forums, would be the loss of 3 months of topics? have I got that right?

when fireservice.co.uk crashed, they eventually got the back up from their host, BUT IT WASN'T COMPATIBLE with the new server they contracted to  tongue what a conundrum

imagine getting this email through ......

First of all please accept our apologies for the recent downtime. I am also not sure if this email will reach you.

On the 1st November we suffered a loss which resulted in losing the databse of the forum. To cut a long story short we installed a new forum at the request of many members on the 8th November which meant that users had to rejoin. I have just got back the lost database which has allowed me to email all those members on the old forum to let you know that you will need to rejoin the new forum. If you have rejoined since the 8th November, please ignore this email.

Forum can be found http://www.fireservice.co.uk/forum]http … o.uk/forum

what a nightmare yikes ALL USERS HAD TO REJOIN? THE ENTIRE DATABASE CRASHED AND BURNED? (well it didn't 'burn' it turned up later floating down the swanny)

Well, what a fortnight. If your reading this then you are looking at our new forum on a new server with a new host. I will try to explain the events of the last week as simply as possible.

On the 1st November 2004 the site went offline due to a server error with our hosts. This resulted in the loss of all services to many sites, this one included.

I was then given several choices. I could either wait until full service resumed, but there was no timescale as the server had crashed again and again due to a hardware fault. The server was due to be replaced with a more upto date server within 6 months anyway.

I was then offered the opportunity to move the site complete to a new server but the database for the forum lay on the old server. Moving the site itself wasnt a problem, as I wrote it, and therefore have it on my own PC.

I decided to take the plunge and move onto a new server and wait until the database was made available to upload back into the forum, still no time scale on when. This we did after ammending over 200 web pages to meet the new server requirements.

Once on the new server we encountered several problems and we set up a temporary forum to guage the views of members. I collated those, and from what was said, most members were happy to start a whole new forum, despite losing 600 members and 14,000 posts. We discussed that the majority would return as regulars anyway. We still encountered further problems which seemed to get dealt with very slowly due to the amount of sites that were affected. The fact that I had the site back up and running meant we were not a priority.

I then noticed that we were using 20% of the monthly bandwidth in one day and this would result in expensive hosting costs on the new server. During the downtime we received a few donations, one being quite substantial.

I then decided in the interests of the forums future that we would move the hosting to a new company and transfer the domain name also. This resulted in a second move to a complete new server and transfer of the new forum database.
The reason I had to close the forum for a second time was so that I could back up all the members and posts and transfer them onto the forum you now find yourself on. If i had taken a backup and then left the forum open, new members and posts posted after the backup would not have been transferred across.

I hope this explains it a little better to those regular members who wondered why we was offline. All i can do is apologise for the downtime the site has suffered as it was beyond my control.

Thanks to all for the emails of support during the downtime.

the thing is, forum crashes DO HAPPEN

website crashes DO HAPPEN

it's just a fact of life, we have to accept it - but at least "somewhere" there is a back up of the database and the above quoted 'bleating' shows that - EVEN WITH a back up, things are not always that easy to restart from a  crash

in fact the http://www.fireservice.co.uk/forum]http … o.uk/forum - following a serious system crash - have decided to go with a brand NEW forum!! all members REJOIN!?

COULD IT HAPPEN ON NEWMARS?  tongue

#96 Re: Not So Free Chat » flu jab? - is it worth the bother? » 2004-10-30 16:29:41

I went for my flu jab today with the missus

we arrived at 1215pm at the Health centre - YEP! It's a Saturday and the waiting room was PACKED OUT

we waited for 10 minutes before being called but it wasn't for the jab, it was for another smaller waiting room

ANOTHER 10 minutes, we get called through to an even smaller waiting room - WHAT A PROCESS but then - a total of 25 minutes later finally the jab, a LOT LESS PAINFUL than I was expecting, it was nothing in fact, just a scratch and the nurse said that they were doing 400 every Saturday tongue anybody else getting the jab?

we heard it cost £25 but we were not charged

#97 Re: Not So Free Chat » new UK flood mapping - could it be used on Mars? » 2004-10-30 15:26:58

has anybody heard about the new UK flood mapping facility?

You just enter your postcode to find whether you are a flood risk, click http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/su … 1&lang=_e] > HERE <  to check YOUR flood risk  ??? e.g. try mine KT1 1QE

flooding-map.jpg
according to this "facility"  I am currently 10' under water  tongue

but seriously, THIS could be used to map the water under the surface of MARS !!  :band:
