Affirmative action is bad...at least in terms of the fact that we need it for minorities to get a fair shot.  We shouldnt need these types of programs for all people to be treated equally.

What are you talking about?

You cant believe everything youre fed by corporations.  al sharpton is a politically motivated pig, but jesse jackson is a decent man who believes in what he fights for.  more often than not, jesse jackson is protesting a clear case of corporate inequality.

I find it rather funny that Bush Sr. and Cheney, who as republicans, are touted as champions of the defense industry, actually killed the industry, except for a very brief period during the Gulf War.

This is close to home, because Grumman was founded a few miles from my house, and 35,000 people lost their jobs directly in that plant as a result of cheney cancelling contracts that the company was promised.

the war on iraq will do very little for the defense industry.  the aerospace industry will die if we dont move it into space.  All our defense industry does now is make spare parts, but very little new hardware.  we build about 10-20 new combat planes a year, and thats a high estimate.

#954 Re: Single Stage To Orbit » SSTO - concepts » 2003-01-10 15:40:44

From my families experience in the defense field, HTOLs are much more favorable.  The military doesnt want a VTOL, or else there would be new versions of the harrier.  you make what the consumer market is receptive to.  it would also be easier to turn around an HTOL spaceplane for regular traffic.  land, refuel, take off.

runways already exist...theres no point in wasting them.  HTOLs could also be modified for aircracft carriers as long distance bombers.  A VTOL that will go suborbital is very hard to launch off a carrier, while a catapult could boost the HTOL, giving it a push.

When people point how you twist things around and avoid questions, you get hostile.

Whether you are 13 or 50, your know-it-all attitude is annoying.  It seems you've become less and less receptive to being told youre wrong.

They do perpetuate racism, but i dont think cal understands that a middle to upper class white person isnt going to have to step over for a minority.  it rarely, if ever happens.

more often, the underqualified white person gets the job.  to say otherwise is ignorant.

#957 Re: Not So Free Chat » Leaglize drugs - say what u want » 2003-01-10 15:28:36

Caltech, the average american drinks.  you think people who drink, including me (im no alcoholic, but i drink occasionally), drink because we like how beer tastes?

the simpsons is actually a brilliant plot.  its the average american family (2 1/2 kids: 2 kids+baby, average worker, alcoholic, springfield, there are like 15 springfields in the US).  Its no coincidence that homer is an alcoholic.

#958 Re: Not So Free Chat » Can someone explain Propaganda - Speak what u like! » 2003-01-10 15:24:20

i would have a lot to say, but i dont want to perpetuate a flamewar that i didnt start, and see no reason to continue.

#959 Re: Not So Free Chat » I herd there gonna start drafting - the draft » 2003-01-10 15:23:02

Who's asking you to take any hit?  Youre sounding more like a martyr every day.

Stop dramatizing what people say.

#961 Re: Terraformation » Marsian Oceans » 2003-01-10 05:55:35

I think he meant he doesnt really expect global warming to occur to that degree in our lifetimes.

But I havent seen him on the board for a while, anyone know where shaun is?

They could build inflatable plastic, brick, or kevlar domes, and use the tin cans as storage.

but i think stock should be based on lift capacity and lift cost.  if it can lift at $1,000/kg and lauch 50 tonnes, its better than $10,000/kg and almost any tonnage.

#963 Re: Single Stage To Orbit » SSTO - concepts » 2003-01-09 21:08:04

RLV research funding went up $300 million this year.  perhaps an SSTO by years end?

#964 Re: Other space advocacy organizations » Colonizing asteroids » 2003-01-09 18:36:12

i truly disagree.  but i wont argue the point now.

#965 Re: Human missions » Changing the Paradigm - Challenging ideas about Mars Exploration » 2003-01-09 18:34:27

I don't think so.  I think the economy is near its bottom point.  With unemployment up, cheap labor is easier to find.  with cheap labor, more can be accomplished by companies, who begin to make a profit again, allowing for more work, etc.

i think we're almost out of the recession...by the next presidential election, unless bush hurts us with some stupid act.

but back on the topic.  what do you think we should do with our space program, josh?

#966 Re: Civilization and Culture » Fun and games - 3 hypothetical Martian settlements... » 2003-01-09 18:05:54

the point is, they couldnt go anywhere, so they would have no leverage.  they could be punished in some form or another (demotion, deportation...but who knows).

#967 Re: Not So Free Chat » What do you think of this? » 2003-01-09 17:39:35

if the thing could work, i would have no problem with it.  whats wrong with defense?  but i dont think it can work, so the simple economics of it makes me angry.

#968 Re: Civilization and Culture » Fun and games - 3 hypothetical Martian settlements... » 2003-01-09 17:36:28

Not destroy anything.  bring new miners, find a new mountain, let the original workers either start a new town or come back to the colony.

#969 Re: Human missions » Changing the Paradigm - Challenging ideas about Mars Exploration » 2003-01-09 17:32:27

i like horizontal spaceplanes because they could replace airplanes.  theres no need to limit them to maximum payloads, because they could go into orbit on their way to say, tokyo, drop off their payload, and drop more people off.  they would always have a maximum payload of mail, passengers, etc.  and they could use existing runways.

the economy goes in cycles.  the 10 year boom we had after the Gulf War was almost bad, because it causes a prolonged bear economy.  It will go back up again, it always has.

#971 Re: Space Policy » Why Not Offer A "Bounty" For A Mars Mission - 10 Billion dollars for the first » 2003-01-09 17:09:40

there are some good monopolies.  telephone for example.  theres a reason europes cell network is 1000x better than the US's.  in some instances, regulated cable.  too many cable lines is bad.

regulated power.  no need for 15 different power lines.

transportation-20 different transcontinental railroad companies would be dumb.  again, regulated monopoly.

There are certain monopolies that make sense for efficiency, and are good if regulated well.

#972 Re: Space Policy » Why Not Offer A "Bounty" For A Mars Mission - 10 Billion dollars for the first » 2003-01-09 16:24:49

capitalism should go into space just like democracy should.  why do people have to liberalize space?

i'm no republican, nor am i a democrat, im right in the middle.  space should work on logic, not ideals.  Capitalism works here, and so does democracy.  Adding a few safeguards to prevent stagnation would further both.

#973 Re: Science, Technology, and Astronomy » New Discoveries - Extraplanetary, deep space, etc. » 2003-01-09 14:07:53

i saw  big_smile

cool, now theoretically, warping gravity could allow us to go really really fast!

#974 Re: Human missions » Changing the Paradigm - Challenging ideas about Mars Exploration » 2003-01-09 13:58:04

Okay.

BTW, according to Highlift, the CNT has already been assembled in 10 m lengths.

#975 Re: Civilization and Culture » Fun and games - 3 hypothetical Martian settlements... » 2003-01-09 05:37:21

the miners would have little leverage.  there would always be other equipment, more could be had from earth, the town could cut them off from access to markets for their goods, and find another mountain to mine.
