So, how concerned are you, DonPanic, about cordial relations between our two countries? Apparently, me voicing my opinion about getting tough with our mutual enemy, Islamofascism, is enough to endanger our relationship but your government actually violating the South Pacific environment (my home) with plutonium contamination is what ... not really relevant?
Excellent point.
I accept these critics from an Aussie, but from you ?
We're helping USA to clean up its nuclear garbages.
The US Department of Energy says the plutonium has to be shipped overseas because there is no plant capable of carrying out the conversion process in the US.
Do you ignore that some hundred kilos of US plutonium just arrived http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3726002.stm]to french Cadarache retreatment plant ?
Or that US nuclear experiments let radioactive pollution over British Isles ?

*How can forces be joined against a threat with people who deny the threat exists?
Cindy
LO
We don't deny any threat, the point is that we live much closer to these terrorists than US average citizens for whom terrorism is a global threat, what we deny.
We have to discriminate and to fight ETA, Corsican, Syria supported terrorists, Lybian terrorism, and so on, we will try to retaliate at and eliminate the right authors of terrorists acts rather than aiming at the first Saddam face guy walking by.
We had blasts in Paris in 1986 in our avenues and metro, and started to fight islamic terrorism much before Bush administration did.
We don't amalgamate and globalise the terrorist threats as you do. When talking about a country, we can point at it on a world map, unlike too many american citizens wich still thought in 2002 that Irak capital was Teheran. Saddam was an ennemy of both talibans and Iranians, he had nothing to see with 9/11.
Talibans were ennemies of Iranians and of the Shiite minority living in Afghanistan and of many other minorities. We did support Massoud instead of talibans as USA did at first. Syrians baathists were ennemy of both Iranian supported terrorists and Iraki Baathists.
There are palestinians spread in all the gulf countries, and with their support, french secret services could play terrorists groups against each other, and their informations about Iraki armament state were acquired on the field, and much more accurate than the US spy satellites photosurvey. We are working with Indian secret services too, unlike USA who supported Pakistan, in which secrets services are infiltrated by what you call islamofacists, so that OBL is warned on pakistanese army offensives before they are set, and where extremist mollahs teach day after day antiUS hate in their madrassas.
Therefore we see Bush administration behaving like a rhinoceros in a glass shop.

Sorry about that somewhat petulant outburst on my part. I guess I just found your chastising words, implying my political immaturity (the usual fallback position of the morally superior Left), to be more than a little ironic .. coming from a citizen of a more-than-slightly recalcitrant nuclear power!
???
I'm not responsible for french leaders politic of armament.
Thanks, now, there is in southern France an experimental virtual nuclear weapons test lab build with technological exchanges with US Army, mainly in high power lasers. We share the results with US army. Remember that in spite of huge political divergencies with Bush administration, we are USA allies. If we could have really vetoed war at Irak, that would have been the best service made to USA, and to the thousands of US families who's son returned or will return home in a coffin.
I played rugby when I was at university, and had great admiration for the Aussies and the Blacks. After struggle on playground, is the "verre de l'amitié"...
If I was to emigrate, Sidney would be my choice as a place to leave in.
I don't forget the many australian tommies who came and gave their lives on french soil fighting with us against german invasion.
I think that war at terrorists is a shadow and mute war that must be led by efficient secret services that should infiltrate the terrorists networks and silently eliminate their leaders with no "tambours et trompetttes". Nothing spectacular like heavy army offensives with so many civilian casualties that lead more and more people to hate westerners and those people will protect or join the terrorists. This war must be surgical. It can be led only if local populations support it and naturally come to tell where the terrorists are.
You can destroy an ant nest only when you can eliminate the queens. You can measure the "war at terror" inefficiency when OBL still runs years after Aghanistan invasion.
If there was to be a bombing raid over Iranian uranium enrichment plants, I would support it. A direct war at Iran would have as a result a nationalist rise against invaders and millions of people to fight and kill.

Fine. Thanks for adding it. My intention wasn't to write a book.
My intention was simply to explain (briefly) the origin of the Arab and Jewish peoples and how far into the past some mutual animosities extend (the OT only flattered 1 of these peoples...guess who?)--Cindy
OK, but a "mise au point" was necessary, because the Arab Muslim expansion started 7 centuries after Israel was destroyed by the Roman Empire, and before the Roman Empire there have not been any confrontation between arabs tribes who lived in the desert and the Jews, and it is a very modern and false interpretation to call "Arabs" the local peoples which lived in and around Palestine in the biblic ages.
LO
There's been a lot of hatred and animosity between these two branches from Abraham for a long time. What we're seeing now is just another manifestation of it.
Ishmael (son of Abraham and a servant) = Arabic peoples.
Israel (son of Abraham and Sarah) = Jews.--Cindy
::EDIT:: The handmaiden/servant's name was Hagar. Just checked it on Google.
p.s. -- and no, I'm NOT religious. I'm citing this from the historical perspective
Yes, but a very lackful "historical perspective", the following must be added :
Not the Arabs, but the Romans destroyed the Jerusalem Temple and obliged the Jews to leave Israel.
Though dominant, Muslims did tolerate Jews as well as Christians as religions with the same God. The evidences are in the Coran.
Sure there have been wars at Muslims from Christians in southern and oriental Europe against muslim expansion, then with crusades in middle east, but if Christians submitted, the Muslims would let them live and practice their own religion.
The muslim domination in Spain led to one of the brightest period of the history of Spain, when people of all Europe came to spanish arab universities to study medecine, astronomy and mathematics.
For centuries, there have been Synagogues in the main arab cities, Alexandria, Cairo, Bagdad, Damascus, Algiers, Rabat.
Lot of Jews lived there peacefully.
When the Jews where told by Christians to leave Spain, or to convert or die, many of them found a place to settle in Arab countries, mainly Morocco and Algeria, where Jews did'nt suffer racism and ostracism as in Europe.
Therefore, the violence of 1948 zionist settlement has been seen by all arabs as a treason.
The fact is that zionists came from northern Europe, mainly Germany and poland, and didn't knew anything about the Arabs.
And when Israel was founded, many Jews from middle-east arab cities were rewarded by Israel to come and settle.
Most of them are Labour and against Sharon, and many of them are regretful of the past time they lived in peace with the Arabs.
I must add that I have visited Israel as well as some arab countries, and I'm not talking about what I don't know.
LO
We are angry at Bush because our arab and our jew communities never had conflicts before Bush and Sharon administrations, now they fear and hate each other.
*So your Arabic and Jewish communities are both so weak-minded and weak-willed they can't try and get along in spite of Bush being in the White House? How sad is that? Can't they take responsibility for their actions and reactions, be friends in spite of everything? Does Bush really have that much power? Maybe those persons in your population should consider themselves FRENCH first, instead of continually dragging problems from thousands of miles away into their homes in France and allowing it to effect them to that point?
--Cindy
It's the power of media reporting day after day news of violence in the Middle-East.
The fact is that it's not so much Bush than Sharon, who sent zionist activists preaching installation in Israel, telling them a Bible is some kind of property bill over palestinian soil and now, if many Jews stay in France because Israel has poor economy, lot of french jews have become some kind of religious extremists, as in my flat of appartments, a family that want all doors opened on friday because they say their religion forbids them to ring a door bell or make the entry code number, trying to impose their will to other inhabitants.
That wouln't be a problem except that if anybody can enter the flat, that doesn't help feeling secure.
All their children are sent in jewish schools were they will not mix up with rest of population, so that their mind is opened on only what is jew.
If you ask that kind of family for whom they vote, the answer might be "likhoud" instead of a french political party.
Here as we say, we think they have their ass between two chairs.
The massive support of this community to Sharon's politic has led some young muslims to harassment towards kippa wearing jews, and by a kind of symetric attitude, young muslims girls started to wear islamic veils, and media made a whole story about them, leading the french government to make a law about veils in public schools.
Be conscious that with media and internet, what happens in any part of the world is known and can have a tremendous influence
LO
I'm tired of this. According to popular world opinion:
Apparently America is/has been always evil and horrible, the other guy has always been misunderstood and picked on.
Please, stop it with that paranoïa !
All Europe and main allies were in best terms with USA during Clinton mandacy, and majority of arab public opinion did support Clinton's efforts for peace between Israel and Palestinians.
May be the 9/11 attacks wouldn't have taken place if Bush hadn't supported Sharon systematic colonisation and ultraviolent retaliation politic.
When we saw 9/11 attacks, we were crying and were as horrifyed as any NewYorker to see desperate people jumping out the twins for a long fall towards death, and we sent among our best mountain commandos to help chasing Bin Laden.
All the civilized world from Beijing to Paris was with USA by these days.
So, if 70% of Europeans now reject USA, blame Bush.
If south american countries of el Mercosur try to sign free trade agreement with Europe rather than with USA, that's because Bush will to violate non military use of Space treaties shows that this administration care a dim about international treaties and will tear them up at any time.
We are angry at Bush because our arab and our jew communities never had conflicts before Bush and Sharon administrations, now they fear and hate each other.
If there is a rising Euro-Indian-China informal alliance, it is pushed by Bush's administration.
Now it's up to US citizens to decide either to be again the best among the world community of nations or to be regarded as among the the roguest ones.

What worries me is that those same people can be so blinded by an irrational hatred for Bush, Blair and Howard that they are perfectly willing to climb into bed with people they wouldn't normally want to associate with.
This is fiddling while Rome burns; a total and dangerous disregard for the big picture by people who claim to have a vision for a fairer world. We need to present a united front against Islamofascism and abandon this irresponsibly petty party-politics.
The hate for Bush and all his supporters isn't irrationnal, it's thought, it's analysed, and most of us consider that Bush feeds and spreads Islamoterrorism with the most stupid and cynical politic USA has ever led. With our Algeria war experience, we know what we are talking about.
We are not alone, more than half the Englishmen, majority of public opinion among USA so called allies in Irak and more than 60% of Europe reject Bush, and America, what I regret.
It's not hate at America that leads froggies, we'll have to take among our strategic reserves to send to America 58 millions anti-Influenza vaccin doses, fast as we can.

Who will dare go to Madrid tell the Spanishes the world is safer after Irak invasion ?
Who will dare say to those Iraki parents of children killed by terrorist blastes or american missiles the world is safer than before Saddam ?

Well, as the jugement on a war is the winner's point of view, a justified war has to be won, and war is won when it leads to a state of peace.
Knowing that, 1914-1918 war at Germany led to WWII, and wasn't a victory.

the Soviets would not be able to maintain production because we could bomb their factories.
My last post about this point of topic, do you really realise the difficulty of air operations over such a vast territory as USSR, more than twice the USA in size, thrice in length, if the warcraft factories were spread in small units ?
Let me have some doubts...
LO
Back to Patton for example, after Germany's defeat he got a first-hand look at both the German people and the Red Army, and began to question some of the decisions made by his superiors. As far as he was concerned, it wasn't over, he was set to roll right on to Moscow, and probably could have done it. Unnecessary? Yes. But it would have prevented Korea, Vietnam, the fall of Eastern Europe to communist oppression, the threat of global nuclear annihilation. Morality is somewhat cloudy, though perhaps the moral is that an unnecessary war now can be a blessing in the future.
About Vietnam, no one, except for General Leclerc who understood vietnamese greed for independance could have avoided a liberation war at France, or any ally, the Viets would have fought with sticks and stones for independance rather than be submitted again to any colonial power.
their factories were out of range of German bombers but not American B-29's operating from the Pacific, their factories were out of range of German bombers but not American B-29's operating from the Pacific,
Ussr air army wasn't as weak as Luftwaffe or Jap's in 1945, and I'm not quite sure that B29s could carry bomb payload as well as fuel to get back home. And as long as Japan was still at war, it would have been a 2 fronts war.
LO
Short of a nuclear attack, I believe any allied advance into the Soviet Union would have bogged down and become a particularly bloody and protracted war.
You're right, Shaun, and must be added to this that all the european peoples having suffered nazi occupation wouldn't have tolerate any alliance with the former Wermacht and the nazi divisions and would have sabotaged this infame alliance, if not starting a open guerilla war against it.
LO
You can intimidate those who back them. And if that fails, you still have the means to strike clean and hard should you be attacked.
Did Oklahoma City bombers had any kind of foreign country support ?
Will you strike a country just because terrorists have a minority support by some extremist wild gangs ?
We should better work on infiltrating terrorists groups, and up to that, getting strong support of the world public opinion is better than be seen as a threat at any country.
You're sure not speaking the way to get that support.

As seen in Madrid attacks, terrorism funding relies mainly on drug and mafias traffic whose money goes get washed in fiscal paradises that are supported thanks to westerners multinational trusts that also make big tax free money.
Therefore I think that you are wrong to say that Western has nothing to see with terrorism.
War at terrorism is a empty concept as long as all means aren't used to destroy these wild banking blackboxes in which some of our great leaders and govenors also do hide their money.
