Well, since you are a serious contributor now, someone in the know (not me, since the new forms are still a mystery to me as well) should help you get credit for your posts. Anybody...?

dicktice, serj's post count is normal and correct.

peace to you.

If you can come up with a means to get it through the troposphere and keep it there, it could be a physical possibility.

Balloons?

Then all you'd need to do is pull half a million square kilometers of controlled airspace out of your hat, and you're in business.   wink

Closer to ten thousand - only a fraction of the ribbon is under 21 kms altitude.

I don’t think most people here are denying the connection between gravity and electromagnetism.

Really?  It's news to me.

Rather they are point out that some of the claimed consequences look more like fantasy then engineering or science.

If the Tajmar result is true - that we can generate gravitational fields from EM fields at the level he describes - then all the rest follows.  The Hiem stuff is interesting because it provides a theoretical justification, but it is incidental really.

The Tajmar result may be garbage, but it is the closest to non-garbage I've ever seen.  UC Berkeley is taking it seriously.  We should have confirmation or not by early next year.

PS. the howstuffworks (or doesn't in this case) article is unrelated to Tajmar's result.

At least two US labs working on replicating the result.

You can also get

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positronium

which is an "atom" of a positron (anti-electron) and an electron.

This normally has a lifetime of 100 nanoseconds, but if you cool it down to form a Bose-Einstein Condensate it can last for much longer, maybe years ...

I don't think he is evil, just crazy.  Go easy on him, he may come around.

#487 Re: Interplanetary transportation » Docking System » 2006-10-22 22:27:52

I think I understand now.  Here is NASA's "design reference mission" (DRM) for a manned mission to Mars ...

http://exploration.jsc.nasa.gov/marsref/contents.html

There is a lot of detail there.  You will need Adobe PDF to view.

A basic problem is to launch as little as possible from Earth - each kilogram is very expensive.  The solution in the NASA DRM is to make rocket fuel for the return journey on Mars from the Martian atmosphere.

Cybersquatter trying to self-justify.  Probably just received the letter demanding he surrender the domain.  He has zero chance of winning.

aliens comunicate with the properties of our world-field

What do they say?

#494 Re: Intelligent Alien Life » DELETED » 2006-10-16 12:48:25

Yes, Minsky very often provides extraordinary thoughts.

In this article, I like his response to the "aliens will have holistic perception" criticism ...

CRITIC: Why can't those aliens perceive entire scenes as wholes instead of breaking them down into our clumsy things with properties? They might instead see what there really is, holistically, as steady flow of formless space in time, instead of arbitrary separate mind-made fragments of approximations to reality?

We always yearn for better ways–and that's a healthy tendency. But worshipping holistic schemes can blind us to the power we gain from usual ways of separating things.

One day I hope to take the time to review Freudenthal's Lincos language as well as the commentaries on it.

#495 Re: Meta New Mars » New Message Board Software » 2006-10-16 12:23:07

Actually, I was asking for someone else.  They're thinking about starting a web BB, and phpBB looks good to me, but I wanted to see if you'd say "... if I was able to start again from scratch, I'd choose ..."

Sounds like you're pretty happy with phpBB though.

#496 Re: Meta New Mars » New Message Board Software » 2006-10-15 23:06:08

I know phpBB isn't all rainbows, but what do you think - is it the best of the bunch out there - or is the grass greener with some other BB software?

#497 Re: Not So Free Chat » Not Forgiven - The Taliban » 2006-10-15 19:58:19

Wow. I missed that. They're planning for partition then. I guess it is inevitable at this point. De facto partition if not formal.

I saw that on Newsnight in BBC. I was shocked, horrified and disgusted to see them being trained. I hope they suffer the repercussion soon.

Surely you can conjure some sympathy for them given your own background.  The Kurds have suffered interminably.  You can't blame them for wanting self-determination.

The religious institution there has enormous power and authority if they choose to use it. If push came to shove (i.e., over oil) they would use it. I agree that the royals are in a difficult position, and likely have no influence.

The Religous groups that Islamists use in Saudi Arabia are banned.  Most of the Jihadists in Iraq listen to Bin Laden and the leader of al-Qaeda in the Land of the Two Rivers. But they make up a tiny portion of the Insurgents. Most of them don't listen or follow a orders from religous leaders. They are just there to free Iraq.

Are the insurgents from outside Iraq that big a factor?  The US admin accuses Iran of sending people, and frankly I don't doubt it's true, but the people who have got to be fighting tooth and nail are the Iraqi Sunnis.  Fallujah isn't mentioned in the US media any more, but I can't imagine that the Iraqi Sunnis have forgotten.

I left the post in Intelligent Alien Life because it was just too appropriate.

Hey guy's what do you think of this poster Marzio

Classic narcissist.

#500 Re: Not So Free Chat » Not Forgiven - The Taliban » 2006-10-15 00:42:14

It's not just Sunnis. It's also Shii. It's the general Iraqi who is angry about the occupation.

I'll grant there's some activity that is reaction against the occupation, and I'm sure Al-Sadr's people attack US troops as a team building exercise.

What do you think would happen if the US withdrew after the US midterm elections?

Also Kurds. You can't forget the kurds.

Yes, the Kurds have had the clearest gameplan since the fall of Saddam.  Note their current focus on Kirkuk.  Could it be the 11+ billion barrels of oil there?

At least the Shii are fighting the americans and getting help from Hezbollah via Iran.

It would be a shocking result for the US if Iraq, or even part of it, became an Islamic theocracy.

The Kurds are having their troops trained by Israel.

Wow.  I missed that.  They're planning for partition then.  I guess it is inevitable at this point.  De facto partition if not formal.

Saudi Arabia has no power over the insurgents.

The religious institution there has enormous power and authority if they choose to use it.  If push came to shove (i.e., over oil) they would use it.

Insurgents hate them and the Saudis are terrified that Islamsits will over throw them and they will lose their pampered luxiours lifestyle.

I agree that the royals are in a difficult position, and likely have no influence.

Saudi Arabia is a joke.

Definitely a place of contradictions.  Its oil wealth has enabled a frozen culture.

Hmmm, top heavy with 40+ guys (what the hell happened to all the gals, by the way?).  Could stay conservative for a long time.  Looks more normal by 2050.
