#26 Re: Human missions » To RTG or not to RTG the size is the question » 2017-05-24 02:50:50

POWER PLANTS

Interesting to note Robert Zubrin's phrase of "Living off the Land" was a metaphor.
What's also interesting is that: a single match stick can kick off an entire Forest Fire.

Since our current "engineering trends" are bent on too much in too little of space;
Then, it is easy to realize the techniques of Von Neumann Over Time approach, applies here.

Such as one small RTG positioned adjacent to the best source of water,
From which the Collecting - Melting - Filtering - Electrolyzing - Sabatiering - CH4/O2 Engine Plant Generating
can commence.

This would be: The Pilot Plant

Working Smarter, Not Harder, right?

#28 Re: Unmanned probes » X-37 Goes to Mars » 2017-05-21 08:36:29

Yeah, the wing things are understood.
The package is already ready for ablating for braking.
Yes, I did say "Glider Chute"
And modded to maneuver to the ground like the Sky Crane.

And, I ended with: "Current State of the Art"
is the current state of the art to use.

Nice to have things come to surface after 8 to 12 years.
But, the older posts "spoke of it" not "what to modify and use right now"

The Title still sounds so cool.

#29 Re: Life support systems » State-change engine/generator » 2017-05-21 07:45:40

Hello Freudslip,
That is an interesting poser... thank you.

An array of Piezoelectric Membranes housed in several Refrigerator Sized Containers
would produce a day-night difference of tremendous force.

Interesting

Now, wouldn't make for an exciting Headlines in the News?
Even the Title sounds like it comes from a 50s B-Rated Sci-Fi Movie.

One of the most high-tech-ish, state-of-the-art, humans-peering-on-humans; Rocket Plane
cleverly designed by the most sophisticated Military Air Force on the planet.

This OTV version of the ex-X-40 Boeing has more autonomy than a Las Vegas Casino.

Can you imagine how accurately effective this already made package would be
if flicked to descend from Martian Orbit?

Change out the Landing Wheels for an upper deployed Glider Chute and
have it land just like the Sky Crane performed for the MSL Curiosity.
And then, land itself Vertically and start the ISRU Process for the Return Trip.
Or, just do something.

But, it already proves the point - on how our "Current State of the Art"
is the current state of the art to use.

Dr. Zubrin,

Have you seen the recent discovery of Methanization of CO2 + 2H2O using the Plasma process?
http://www.plasapar.com/en/plasma-catal … ion-of-co2

Would you entertain a similar method, thus using fewer parts, energy, and weight?

#32 Re: Other space advocacy organizations » Cacophony of Conflagration » 2017-05-19 11:53:22

Should have titled this Topic:
"...Outreach of the Many, Traverses the Future of the One..."
( yeah, it's a Spock thing, sorry )

Was not being facetious pointing out that there are too many "Mars organizations",
.....with the emphasis on: "not being facetious".

All those groups that started "well after the fact", and assuming "they're first".
Usually it's the increasing number of the ever evolving social media groups.
Of course, rebutting posts will gleefully plagiarize in favor of such increase.

Or, is it in your interests to maintain a sense of healthy competition?
Having a constant flux of Mars Groups, is like a mission-driven stock exchange.
In all that, we see a multi-haven of Convention Circuses.

The Mars Society can increase membership by redirecting that focus.
I'm looking for a creative imagination here, that's unbiased and DEVOID of Class.

It was bound to happen.
Boy Scout's Merit Badge for "Robotics"
http://boyslife.org/merit-badges/robotics-merit-badge/

We can not let the MSL take all the credit, can we?   ( LOL )

What Would the Merit Badge Look Like from attending the MDRS or Off-World Project?

#34 Re: Civilization and Culture » How and which name do you pick for FIRST Mars human settlement? » 2017-05-19 09:11:48

I would choose:  JASMINE

A derivative of J S M - the initials of the late James S. Martin Jr.

Viking Mission

#35 Re: Civilization and Culture » Neologism Corner » 2017-05-19 09:07:00

Oh goodie... a smattering of sniglets foreboding the festoons of the Fourth Rock
Speaking of which;

Fourth Rock - The High Council of Mars or, a rubbish Pop Group

A Barney - Rubble of rocks at cliff's edge to warn of approach. (possible bad pun)

3P (or, Sweet Pea) - The Third Orbit of Phobos and the end of a Martian Day

Scrump - Water Ice clumped with Slushie CO2 Ice near the Polar Regions.

Twinkle - When Deimos & Phobos eclipse each other.

A Sutekh - An in coming "destroyer asteroid" to finish the planet off.(Pyramids of Mars / Dr. Who)

Jaffa Cakes - Risen Volcanic region of Tharsis.

Scrunch - Partially caved in Lava Tube in the Ascearus Region.

#36 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-19 05:33:45

If we can stay "on mission" here.
This is the "Ask Dr. Zubrin 'Official Thread'"

No one speaks for Dr. Robert Zubrin. That would be derisive.
He is "the Alpha" of the organization

This input is a series of questions asked by anyone.
Like: the public or, high end aerospace moguls.

I could've easily compiled a prioritized list to James Burk.
As a matter of fact, I already have.

And James said" "So keep the questions coming!"

"Anyone" could ask these questions. And, that 'anyone' might be
the person who has 10 million dollars to contribute.

OK... so I loved playing Half-Life 2 by Valve & Steam.

Since February, Steam offers "Take on mars", an interactive Sim (game) that
has many possibilities.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/244030/Take_On_Mars/

A Splendid and spectacular 3D walk through, that's currently $14.

John Fongheiser, of Historic Space Systems Ohio, is what we strive for.
....the pure adventure of Space Faring through Full Mock Up Simulators.

Had phones him up last year and praised his wonderful work.
Asking him if he would entertain mock ups of Mars Landers & Rovers.
And loved the idea, though his current schedules keeps him busy.
He'd look into it in the future.

From the Shuttle back to Gemini & Mercury, these Sims are tricked out
in a modern, frugal way and are thorough enough. to perform Test Runs

www.http://space1.com/index.html

Would be quite entertaining if The Mars Society could
make a set of Mars Direct Mock Sims.

#39 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-18 06:18:46

jburk - I'm on it
SpaceNut - Pertinent questions-for-action, versus no answers from Staff, because Dr. Zubrin is the Alpha.
RobertDyck - That Link is a parallel to the facebook equivalent of space camp prattle of sophomore vernacular.

Will be my pleasure to put-on-Topic Subjects.

Though, I see them having more use - when put to action - as in, actual prototypes.
And sending these prototypes to the Analogs - to be "proven over time".

Jeepers... I was just getting warmed up  lol

In the case for Mars' demise,

Three years ago, Christopher McKay sent me a White Paper on
Maria Marinova's presentation of the Mega Impact which has obviously
destructed an entire planet.
Leaving two small remnants we see today, called: Phobos & Deimos.

]http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v4 … 07070.html
Otherwise, google up: "Dichotomy Mars Mega Impact"

What's equally fascinating is how the Hellas Basin on one side the planet
and the Tharsis Rise on the exact opposite were created by
the Newton's Cradle effect at a time when the Planet was still soft inside
during its early stages of development.

As evidenced by the magnetometric photo map from nasa, the dominant south pole
was disturbed and upsetting it's axis nearly 51 degrees.

Now, if we can only get the assistance to a Laboratory's Super Computer and
Back-Date the time-line to the moment of impact.

That would be nice, yes?

#41 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » Martian Self-Government: Realizing Our Dream » 2017-05-17 19:10:30

Please pardon my Occam's Razor.

To have a governing body devoid of anything related to Kim Stanley Robinson
who replicates the human genome  by substituting oppression for unconditional trust.

#42 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-17 13:40:35

Dr. Zubrin

- Has the Staff entertained making a working mock up of the ERV?

- Do the Analogs maintain a "Ship's Log" while they're in commission?

- Could a scaled rocket-plane launch from Mojave Spaceport and arrive at the MDRS?

- Do the Analogs have Radiation Detectors monitoring Solar activity?

- Has Buzz Aldrin ever visited the MDRS?

- Can the ATVs be modified to run from Methane (LP Gas Conversions) ?

#43 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-17 13:16:12

Dr. Zubrin

- Has the Von Neumann Constructor approach been considered for future Mars Autonomy?

- Have Vocanic Tubes been discovered in the Tharsis Region?

- Can we configure subsurface dwellings using the architecture of Paolo Solari(1919-2013)?

- Does the Tharsis Region have warm pockets closer to the surface?

- Can we ever have a "Space Truck" like the Hermes from "The Martian"?

- Do the Analog Teams "Weigh-Their-Payload" before arriving at the MDRS / FMARS?

#44 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-17 12:26:02

Dr. Zubrin

- Will TMS have a presence at Consumer Electronic Shows in Las Legas?

- Does The Mars Society have an active Educational Outreach?

- Is the Mission Calendar preferred MJD or the Darian type?

- Will Coordinated Mars Time (MTC) be used?

- Can you make Methane Fuel at the Analog Stations?

- Besides Cable Networks, will PBS ever do a story on The Mars Society?

#45 Re: Not So Free Chat » When Science climate change becomes perverted by Politics. » 2017-05-16 12:21:56

Another interesting Fun Fact about how our Scientists today are dismissing Science Fact....

Global Warming
"... we will be in peril is all the Polar Ice Caps melt and we'll be under 150 feet of water.
They calculated that using the entire volume of ice we have on planet earth.
Not the volume of Ice that is "physically above the water".

#46 Re: Human missions » NASA's worst plan yet! » 2017-05-16 11:27:09

...nasa's leadership is lacking James S. Martin Jr.
Currently;
- management has a belief system in scientists'
- scientists have departed the womb of science.
Science: that field of systematic knowledge of the physical world
gained through observation and experimentation by which
fact can be ascertained.
Nowadays, false premise is substituted for fact.

It's time to present "The State of Affairs" at the next Convention.

#47 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-16 09:51:38

Dr. Zubrin
- Can we have a permanent presence of Rover Rotations at the Analogs from the winners of the URCs?

- Could "Android Cardboard VR" be used for: EVAs, SAR, and other Mars Direct Environments?

- Will Human Tissue Samples ever be Tested Outside the Van Allen Belt?

- Can each Analog Team Publish their Mission as a Publication in English, please?

- MDRS Medical Personnel - can they design for us an EVA Suit Bio-Telemetry System?

- Can Mars-Sim be synchronized with Analog Missions?

#48 Re: Martian Politics and Economy » When Mars Became a political Topic and not Mission Driven » 2017-05-16 08:58:02

On a Global Basis, JFK's Speech was last instance where...
"Science Could Accelerate at the Speed of Purpose"
Emphasis on: Global Basis

After Apollo,
that actual practice of Science became separated from the Scientist who mastered it.

I Am Not Substituting metaphors, for the use of Occam's Razor, thank you.

#49 Re: Mars Analogue Research Stations » Uncharted » 2017-05-16 07:40:25

This is about the production of highly effective "Hiking Maps of Mars"
And using the Kilometer as a standard for "The Martian Mile".

Raytheon Corporation made the E.P.L.R.S. from the early 90s.
( Enhanced Position Location Reporting System )
Used when GPS is Jammed with ECM.

I would fancy less debris orbiting Mars than our own.

We already have positional accuracy of Mars' geographic landscape.
But are lacking the representation of topographic relief "with contours" to
be used by explorers.

#50 Re: Not So Free Chat » Ask Robert Zubrin *Official Thread* » 2017-05-15 07:28:35

Dr. Zubrin

- Can we have an Aerial Drone, similar to ARES Rocket Plane, do magnetometer recons at the Analogs?(eBee type)

- Will The Mars Society ever have a "Proving Grounds" at the Mojave Spaceport?

- Can we spearhead a real "Mars Hiking Map", using KMs as the Standard Martian Mile?

- Are there any 3D Printer Companies who can prove their Sand-Printing Techniques at the Analogs?

- Would you have the 2018 Int'l Mars Society Convention in CHICAGO?

- Is it possible to promote Mars Direct Design Programs with Universities?
